A dumb Rhein king

haha, give the oak monster shirts props one day and then complain about them the next 😀

QOTD: I don't know if I can remember what I had in 2007, but this week I had a Greek Moschofilero by Boutari. It was very good. The worst wine was a cab from Cavas Submarinas. It tasted like wet musty cardboard. It could be TCA even though the cork was synthetic.

Welcome back, Gary! We really missed you. Hope you had a wonderful time on your trip. Too bad you return to mediocre wine. 🙁

QOTD: Best wine we had in the last 2 weeks was the Penfolds Rawson’s Retreat Shiraz from Australia. Had it at a great jazz club in Kansas City. Don’t remember the vintage, but look at my cork’d profile and it’s there. The worst was a red of some sort at Pirdle Winery in Weston, Missouri. It was horrid! Almost as bad as their honey mead. 😛 At least they had a nice summer white and a pseudo port that were drinkable.

Glad you made it back safely!

Welcome back. Is that really you?

QOTD: Only have had two bottles while you’ve been away. The better would be a Chateau Ste Michelle cab and the lesser would be finishing my sister in law’s bottle of Blackstone cab.

    Time to grill some chicken.

Great to have you back G-Man. Where’s the Siduri in that Pinot line-up? Show Adam some love.

QOTD: To my a surprise last years vintage of Pax Syrah Rose, and the new vitnage of Tandem Sangiacomo Chard., both really gorgeous. The worst by far was Denis Jamain Reuilly Pinot Noir, one of the rare miss-hits by Kermit Lynch.

So when is the auction for the green shirt we all came to fear seeing again? 🙂

    QOTD
Best: A tie between Viacosta Rodano Chianti Classico Riserva 1995 and a Kinkead Ridge Riesling 2006.

Worst: LaPlaya 2006 Sauvignon Blanc from Chile. Wish that boat had sunk!

QOTD: We went wine tasting a few times in the past couple weeks. Lately, though, I cannot get enough of the 2006 Qupe Bien Nacido Cuvee, which is amazing and nutty, plus good QPR. Also tried 2004 EROS at Sunstone that was a fantastic bordeaux blend, but too much $$.

The worst was this 2005 Kalyra Sauvignon Blanc. Only a taste of this, but it was horrid (I think the company called it “gooseberry”)

    Best: Neo Sentido….winemaker Isaac Fernandez.
Worst: No bad ones this past week. Most nothing to write home about.

Nice to have you back. Jack up the sound on the recording. I don’t like to put on headphones. Messes up my hair. 🙂

Wow Gary’s rippin’ up the Pinots today! Never had the Nuthouse, but I don’t ever remember liking Argyle’s style of pinot. Welcome back buddy. Now get back to work! hahaha

Best new discovery recently was the 2006 Dry Creek Chenin Blanc. My first CB! (Even though I’ve had a Vouray in the cellar for a long time already) Good QPR if you ask me. GV why don’t you have this one?

Worst: Michael Pozzan Winery Annabella Chardonnay (either 04 or 05) How did I get tricked into buying this guy’s wines again? He sucks! I didn’t know you could make a wine with this much heat!!!!! Even my mom said it was too much.

  • Welcome back, Gary boy!! hey, when’s AJ’s 21st b-day? let’s throw a big bash, Concepcion and I will be there. which of the Crystal boats did you go on? my parents took that cruise recently, but they went on Royal Caribbean, and they’re going again in October, and I’m pretty certain that they’re going on Crystal. Looking in my cork’d journal, the best wine that I’ve had while you were gone was the 1999 Chateau Guiraud Sauterne, 9 days ago. The worst wine was the 2005 Caballero de la Cepa Syrah Blend. Same score as the 2006 Casillero del Diablo Pinot Noir that I had 9 days ago. Not bad wines, just lower quality thus scores.

Good to have you back, GV!
Only good wines here this week. Worst was a corked bottle, Alma Rosa pinot, but corked only by my own fault so that doesn’t really count. Don’t ask. Best was the Hartig cab with hamburgers and sauteed Vidalia onions and mushrooms. Sweet, sweet summer.

Gary.. So great to have you back, you could tell it was a long day at the end of the pre-tapes. QOTD: de Lorimier 2002 Mosaic was the best while you were out. 64% Cabernet, 21% Merlot, 15% Malbec. Really enjoying it, and after watching an earlier show I now know what it means when it says Estate Bottled on the top! Question for you, ever been to Chicago, or plan on being for any sort of event in the future? Hope so, great city.

Welcome back to the good old USA.

QOTD: Best wine in 14 days? 2004 Quinto do Crasto Reserva: Fantastic bottle of wine, great personality and if I close my eyes, I can still taste the finish. I cannot seem to find any more, but if it pops up, it is worth twice its price.
Worst wine? A little Bordeaux that smelled exactly like manure. Unfortunately, the body and flavor profile were a real let down.

If I had a blog, I would say something nice.

  • wolfie

qotd: most interesting wine was probably this $10 gigondas i had the other night. the thing smelled like a pile of chalk, without a trace of fruit, but then delivered some nice fruit flavor in the mouth, totally different from the nose. of course i forget the name…

also had a willamette valley vineyards pinot that was pretty nice

  • Welcome back, Gary!

I did a guided PN tasting for some friends who are at varying levels of interest in wine, and we had some amazing wines and some pretty disappointing ones.

QOTD: The best of the bunch was the 2005 Solena from Willamette Valley, which I expected to be good, but which surprised in just how rich it turned out to be — and really helped to drive home a point I was trying to make about Willamette Valley PNs, which was nice.

QOTD Extended: The biggest disappointment was a 2004 Goldeneye, which I think must have suffered a bit from the trip over, because I’ve never had one of their wines that didn’t wow me at least a little bit. Best descriptive quote from that wine: “Like a long trip on the schoolbus.” Luckily, we also tasted the 2004 Goldeneye Narrows and the 2004 Confluence, both of which knocked people’s socks off, so the winery was ultimately redeemed.

Big G’s BACK! NICE, glad to the fresh version of the Big G. Okay QOTD. You killed it on the 2004 Turnbull. It was Really; I’m mean really good.
Next, my bad Wine story goes like this, I opened a 1.5L bottle of Robert Mondavi 1979 Reserve with friends last week and to our dismay Cork Damage. Yup, it was brown & Nasty. A few nights later the same thing happened with a 1978 Chateau Pichon Longueville. So, my friends were both nice enough to open these up, but they were ruined by cork rot. Bite Me!

GREAT ODIN’S RAVEN, welcome back Gary. I had some friends over the other night for dinner and we shared a 2003 Pontac Lynch which has blown me away with its balance and breeding the five times I’ve had it;can’t wait for the 05 . Another awesome wine we had was the 2004 Caymus cab which has an amazing freshness to it, near perfect winemaking by Chuck Wagner. On the other hand at a recent luncheon, Gallo Twin Valley non-vintage cab, merlot and of course hearty burgundy was served and I couldn’t tell the difference between them. THANKS AGAIN for the free shipping, the wine arrived in perfect shape.
