A dumb Rhein king

haha, give the oak monster shirts props one day and then complain about them the next 😀

QOTD: I don't know if I can remember what I had in 2007, but this week I had a Greek Moschofilero by Boutari. It was very good. The worst wine was a cab from Cavas Submarinas. It tasted like wet musty cardboard. It could be TCA even though the cork was synthetic.

I used to like your ratings.

An 87 point wine is a “pass” at “four point three dollars”
So, an 87 then, by your standards, is a PASS even if free? Am I to understand that anything that isn’t 90 points is garbage?

    Very strange rating and comment.

    YEAH! SF GLASS!

It was really great to meet you in SF, and I hope to see you again sometime.

    QOTD:
best: 2005 Jacoby Bernkastler Badstube Riesling Spatlese. I’m fairly new to the world of Riesling, but this is my favorite so far.
worst: a $4 phoney “Rioja” (CA, not Spain) from Trader Joe’s.

@Mike (a few comments above mine): That’s $43, not 4.3. You’re welcome to spend $43 on a wine that delivers what you can easily find for less than $15 most anywhere, but I’m sticking with Gary on this one.

Best= DuMol Pinot Noir 2004, would love your comments on it.
Worst= one of the many oak monster chards, can’t even remember name.

I understand that there seems to be some confusion when hearing your comments and ratings on a particular wine. There are times you really seem to hate a wine, like Jersey Boy, but still give it 87 points. Most would have guessed you had it about and 80. Then the first wine tonight got an 89, but still didn’t like it too much??? I understand you PAZZZZZ many times on price, but the ratings do appear weird.

The best wine I’ve had in the last two weeks is a 1945 Chateau Calon-Segur. Still plenty of fruit, lotes of tobacco and very good complexity. As any good wine of this age, it has developed a huge breadth of complex, secondary bouquet and flavors. Don’t you just love when the plan comes together!

    Welcome back G.
Well, in the past 2 weeks I tried 2 wines and both were good:
1- La Croix de Beaucaillou st-julien 2003, an affordable excellent red Bordeaux
2- Kim Crawford Chardonay (unoaked) 2006 which I found to be good, refreshing and just for its price.

    Cheers,
    Grapedigger – Montreal

Hey Gary, welcome back! I put a couple links to your site on my blog, and even did one of my podcast episodes about “online wine social networks” and gave you a shout out.

One suggestion to make it easier and more attractive for people to link to your site – provide some banner/buttons. I just swiped your logo and shrunk it in Photoshop, but it would have been easier to just grab a little button and go.

    Hey! Welcome Back!

  • Welcome back! Glad you had a great vaca.

So I’ve had this blog (winecentric.blogspot.com) where I’ve written about Wine Library and have two permanent sidebar links for over a year even before you asked for them. So where’s the love? Where’s my return link? 🙂

Is the title of this one a little take off from Eminem…?

    QOTD:

Best wine — 2004 Sea Smoke Southing Pinot Noir.

Worst wine — 2006 Yellowtail Shiraz something or other… Wife bought it for a group of people at a party who don’t drink wine. I had a sip and it was fakey fakey. Fake oak, fake fruit. It tasted like liquid smoke meets Kool Aid with not enough water.

Hope you had a great vacation, good to see you’re back!

QOTD: I was actually in the Med as well last week, vacationing on Sicily. So I’ll stick to best & worst Sicilian wine I drank while out there:

Best: Cusumano Insolia 2005 – very interesting indigenous Sicilian (from what I’ve understood) white varietal wine. Had a sort of marzipan (almonds?) aftertaste which I loved. Cheap too (6.5 EUR retail).

Worst: Planeta La Segreta Bianco 2006 – blend white with predominantely Grecanico (60%). Was completely off, very acidic and unpleasant in the whole. I suspect it may have cooked a little too long in the Sicilian heat at one point.

Way late with this response Gary, my DSL connection has ben out. Welcome home! QOTD: a Frascati Superiore I stumbled upon at the local supper market. Cheap, clean, crisp. Really, very nice.

GV- Good to have you back. I didn’t respond right away as I was on a little vaca of my own. Which leads me to the QOTD: I was able to try many different wines purchased through WL with great friends who came into town. We rented a house up in the San Juan islands here in WA and dug into the…
2001 Sky Zinfandel Mount Veeder, 2006 Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc, 2004 Cave Springs Ice Wine Riesling, with the champion being the 2004 Chateau Le Gay Bordeux. We popped it open and then went whale watching. We came back and enjoyed it with some killer Filet Minon. So, all that to say, THANKS for the suggestions. We had a great trip and you were there with us in spirit.

Had some pretty good wines while you where away, my favorite of which was the Napa Valley 2003 Cliff Lede Claret, quickley followed by the 2004 Seghesio 100% Old Vine Zinfindel. Both wonderfull wines, and for the love of god that Zin was amazing with my chocolate creme brulee… In other news distastefull wine during the break, had a 2002 Cyrus Syrah that was just an abomination…

  • David M Roberts

Best = 2004 Sebastiani “Cherryblock” cab. A profound wine. Not only a fantastic nose, but marvelous mouthfeel and balance. Well worth the roughly $70 price per bottle. Low production at something like 700 cases. Estate grown from a small area of the vineyard where cherry trees once grew.

Best Value = 2004 Justin “Orphan.” Justin makes a high end label called “Isoceles,” and the less than premium fruit goes into the “Orphan” label. However, this is an excellent, well-crafted wine for in the area of $17. In essence, you get a $70 bottle for a quarter of the price. Sells out quickly.

Worst = Echo Valley Sangiovese (vintage unkown). Tried this on vacation while in Arizona. It was made in Sedona, AZ. Not good at all. Not even sure if it was sangiovese, let alone wine! Two sips was all I could stomach.

Note: someone prior mentioned Lindsey’s Cuvee “Truth.” Indeed, a really intersting cult wine / blend. Check it out if you can find it.
