Awesome ep thanks so much for doing it for us. QOTD well no one favorite but whatever I’m drinking is it (as long as it’s not a PAZZZ). In this heat I prefer something on the lighter side, like a Prosecco or Rose Brut. Agree that many tend to over chill whites. And agree with others that pink is definitely “in”.

  • Dan-O

QOTD: Diggin’ a 2000 Mount Langi Ghiran Cliff’s Edge Shiraz right now – Perfect for summer BBQ’s.

RAD RAD RAD RAD SHOW GARY! That was a lot of fun AND informative, I wish all after school specials were like this.
QOTD: A variety of different Sancerre’s have been rocking me this summer thus far.

Fantastic work, man. Easily my favorite episode to date (As I type I have another tab open so that I can send this ep to all my wine drinkin’ buddies on facebook)

QOTD: Right now I’m all about New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, but I’m thinking about running out and snagging a Chenin Blanc or two to try out.

Oh and in response to your observation of the day. You are originally a continental Eurasian, I’m originally from Great Britain, herein lies the problem: we are apparently unable to profess any kind of love except during one-night-stands and toward alcohol.

QOTD: Semillon or Pinot Noir … depending on my mood.

Question for you – probably been asked before but what do you do with all the opened bottles of wine from your tastings?

  • Joe F.

Hillinger Welschreisling 12 bones Sprite/gatorade taste profile, white grape juice minus the sweetness LOVE IT. Dying to know if anyone else has ever tried it.

I think they’re called bull rushes (the weed in the swamp). At least they were in Manitoba where I grew up.

QOTD. Summer Wine? Same as winter. Cote de Nuits Burgundy or Chateauneuf du Pape (Vieux Telegraphe). However, I do drink more white in the summer, but in a far more indiscriminate manner.

God it looks like the weather sucks out there. I love CA.

  • OKH

    Out of lurk mode –

Fave summer wines: Sauv. Blanc, beer….and God help me but those Mike’s Hard Lemonade things are really tasty.

  • CindyW

Great ep — you’re braver than me. I run inside when it gets above 85. 🙂

punk = cat tail (cat-o-nine-tails is a type of whip)

Way to make up for yesterday, even though the vid clips were excellent looking! You make me not miss the humidity of the northeast one bit! It’s 107 today in Vegas and it’s beautifully bone dry.

Summer quaffers: I can’t get enough Riesling to cure my desert thirst, though a cool clean Sauv blanc can sometimes do the trick.

I loved the marathon show… need more of them.
95 degrees… bad for Jersey, but it would be nice here in Vegas, we are creeping up to 107…

  • Great Ep GV!

Got to say, summer time & 95+ calls for a nice cold beer.

Summer evening, outside, breaking the rules with a nice New Zealand Cab Sauv sounds great!

  • Maggie English

Great show- thanks for making up for yesterday!

The tall plants with the brown, heavy cylinders at the top are cattails. Your welcome 🙂

QOTD: I am drinking a lot of viognier lately. Mostly from central california/santa ynez. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get my hands on the Bilacia or the Carina Cellars (Carina has a bad rap around here, but I’ve never tried their wines).

QOTD – I’m back to Roses, good ones, dry ones with just a touch of RS. No WZ…

30 minutes! My bride has been calling me for dinner for 15….

  • Ari

    2 summers ago: Markham Chardonnay

    Last summer: Rosenblum Roussanne

This summer: undecided. It’s leaning in a very pink direction, without a specific favorite (though I enjoyed Jepson’s Rose that I got from wine.woot.com — a LOT — and it doesn’t seem to be on their website anymore. *sad*)

You have to check out the efforts from Leyda-San Antonio Valley in Chile. Their Sauvignon Blanc 92R.P.WA and Chardonnay 91R.P.WA from Amayna Vineyards amazing stuff. They even make a barrel fermented Sauvignon Blanc!Yum!Cool climate zones, the future of chile;chards, s.blancs, pinot n., syrah. Look into it Bro!!

The lagoon thing, that plant is commonly known as a cat-tail.

    Thanks Gary

Atta Boy… screw the chiller. Cold wine messes up my palette (or pallet {non-old school spelling}). CindyW got it right- “Cat-tails” are the pond or swamp plant Gary V. was trying to think of. Jen, cat-o-nine tails? Sounds cool whatever it is.

QOTD:Conundrum or Maculan Pino & Toi- Anyone have a good red they like during the summer???

  • Gary, the things in the marsh are called CATTAILS. If you look it up in the dictionary on your mac, you’ll see a picture of them. I used to love to play in the cattails when I was a kid (I grew up on a ranch). My cousin and I used to pick the tops off of them from horseback and then charge at each other from opposite ends of the field (jousting-style) and pelt each other.

QOTD: My all-time favorite summertime wine is the 2005 Demeter Zoltan “V” Furmint.

QOTD- easy. Domaine du Pouy, an ugni blanc. $6-7, summer in a glass.

  • SP

    Great episode GV!!

I agree rules are horrible, but guidelines can help the less informed.

    QOTD: Karantes Rose

Had a Muscadet tonight, first time, I agree with you 100%, trying new wines is the only way to live and of course expand your palate and mind!!

QOTD – Summertime wines? F the rules! Same as always – give me a very good Zinfandel or a Loire chenin blanc or sauvignon blanc and my day is made.

Destined to become one of the great episodes.

    In regards to the rant…

#1 I love my parents too & I tell them I love them. And, like you, I think one of the best things about wine is the way it brings people together. On the other hand, my parents don’t drink. So the question is does this merit a mouth kiss or just cheek?

#2 Rules…didn’t they come from somewhere? Is it possible that some of them might be here to help us and not hurt us? Is it possible that not all of them were written by industry kingpins hoping to make wine un-fun? I am NOT saying that I am a legalist when it comes to wine but I will say that there are some guidelines that can be helpful. Since this is a yang episode to a previous ying episode I though I would supply a little yang rant to your ying rant.

QOTD: Very tough call…I’m going to have to go with the Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc since you gave their Reisling props today.

    Thanks for the marathon!
