I tried to find the bonus footage on Facebook and couldn’t find it. It looks like a lot of young people and I just don’t know where all this is leading to. I don’t need 800 “friends”. If Gary wants to be a DVD, fine, I don’t know if I’m buying…I’ll just stick with WLTV.

  • GV missed you and the show when you were in Napa, welcome back! Most over the top? Maybe what I do for a living..sliding headfirst down a mile long iced track at 80 mph.

dude I’m buying those just because they have cool labels. QOTD: Redsox fans. All of them. I’m a non-native new englander deep in the heart of Sox coutry. Cant handle it anymore.

YES — Get your grandmother on the show!

    Please leave your shirt on.

Sniffy sniff? What’s that? And where will we be sniffy-sniffing in Napa next month?

Wow, a Dave Kingman reference. I never would have imagined it.

    QOTD: TampaSteve

Facebook? But I’m not a perve.

  • JimKay

Love it! The unvarnished tasting. Pazzzzz.
How about trying the 06 Pillar Red, 05 Entity or a few Shiraz wines from comparable producers. Is all Australian shiraz just fruit juice now?

    Hey Gary,

I can tell you why some of your vaniyacs have left….. At the start of your run, you had given us the hope of a new way of looking at and learning about wine. Well, quite honestly, aside from your over the top attitude (which I do not mean as a negative thing at all) it’s just the same thing over and over. You sit, you smell and taste wines, you dress up your notes in fancy analogies and you yell a bit. That’s all fine and good, but all we’re learning to do is appreciate your palate instead of learning how to develop ours.

Also, there is a good chance for these programs to teach us about wine as an entity rather than focus on how one particular wine scores. The Amarone episode yesterday was a perfect example. It could have been a stellar episode on what Amarone is, that is to say, what grapes go into it, what region it is produced in, how the grapes are picked, processed and vinified and the expectant results from a classic example (ie.. flavour, body and bouquet profiles as well as cellar potential and what to expect from bottle age). Instead, you asked us to google it if we’re interested?! Not kosher, man.

These things, in my opinion would really put you right at the top as most sources are just satisfied by telling you what they think is a good wine. I would love to know how to tell the difference from a classic Pauillac and a classic St. Julien just by the nose and flavour profile. I would also love to be able to pick out the single classic Sonoma cab from a blind bunch of great Napa cabs. Difference between Merlot and Cab. Why blend? How does temperature in the vineyards affect the final wine? What are the key components for a cellar worthy bottle? Can you really taste Rutherford “dust”? Why do Chilean wines often have a sanguine flavour? Is it the soil? Why is poor soil good and good soil bad? These are things you often here about, but never have explained by wine snobs.

Anyway, that’s my reason for not watching as often… I think others probably feel the same way.

Facebook?! Why don’t yah just do a show on e-harmony! This is not too cool for school G-Man.

As for the episode way to be the necessary giant killer. Now I wonder since Parker hasn’t put out any new ratings that perhaps he tasted the new vintage and thought the same as you. It will be very interesting to see the big mags way in on this.

QOTD: new computers systems, over-the-top all weekend long.

Thanks for doing these, on paper my style but after seeing that I’m not so sure, guess I’ll have to follow your advice and see for myself.

Yeah…. bring on nana Vaynerchuk, but please keep the peeing on yourself off-camera(and, preferably, behind closed doors).

Vodka on the chest as a child, eh? I knew there would be a logical explanation somewhere (delighted to hear it wasn’t being dropped on your head).

Leave facebook to the CKC, don’t be dragging us over-the-hillers into there, they don’t want it and it just makes us more ornery (unless of course you’re going to drag them onto the A.A.R.P forum)

I simply set up an account on one of these things at your direction, mind you, and received 4 emails from people wanting to be “friends” 3 of them were from now dead accounts and one of them was a provacative invite from an account with a pic of a gorgeous girl who was my daughters age wanting to be more than virtual friends(and I’m sure the 3 dead ones were similar in nature). Now I pretty much know what’s what and I know I’m not going to have any 20-somethings coming on to me (neither virtually nor in meatspace).

Aren’t you concerned a lonely WLTVer isn’t going to recognize the Nigeria address on the wire transfer risk losing a good customer!

Thanks but no, I get enough spam, amazing financial opportunities, offers for Viagra and whatnot in my own inbox without having to “seek it out”.

Thanks to whomever provided the link for the download.

It’s all good though, you follow your demon and I’ll pick and chose the path I elect to go down. More power to you.

Wow! Jay Curtis you really hit the nail on the head….inquired about alot of things that I’m interested in. I’m not a CKC and I appreciate learning about new wines and why and how they get so good. So far as you can tell, Italy is my fav! I trust my palate and encourage others to do the same! I would love to know why bad soil is good for wine and good soil sucks!! Face book??? what is up with that…obviously want to reach a certain audience..I’m not that. I’m not a wine snob, but a wine diva who loves learning about wines, talking about wines, like to recommend good wines, drinking wines and learning what makes a good wine…I don’t really think face book is the place to do that, at least I wouldn’t look there for info.

QOTD: Over the top—-my son hands down, 14 years old, paper route, cuts grass, runs cross country, volunteers at the local hospital!!! He is totally over the top and I love him dearly, not to mention he makes me very very proud!!!! Difficult to find a 14 year old these days that is so caring…some day he will make a fine doctor, for that is what his dream is!!!

GV come back to your roots and enjoy the good stuff!

Jay brings up some valid points and great ideas. We love the show and your opinion on wines. We’ve learned your pallete and can interpret what may fit ours. We are changing the wine world. But there is room for a little bit more education. Don’t be afraid to share the knowledge you’ve garnered over the last decade. There’s a reason you can blind taste several wines and nail down their variety, origin and sometimes vintage. Many seasoned wine drinkers can do this. Your predominant viewership is not that experienced. Let’s share those “secrets” with them as well. It’s part of de-mystifying the intricacies of this whole wine thing. Don’t take this as a request for you to go all technical on us. You understand what we are trying to say.

Facebook? Sorry, pal, but I ain’t going there.

QOTD: Any Australian wine Parker scores higher than 92.

i wonder what would happen if you redid the tasting, reversing the order of the wines you tasted, gary? that size of a wine (if you want to call it that) and alc level can put a lot of spin on the palate. by the time you get to #3, one’s taste buds have to be fairly singed i would think. that said, i tried 2 left last fall and thought it should be labeled a port, then we could sit back and enjoy it for what it’s more like (though i agree, it’s fairly one dimensional…ie better real ports out there). i noticed some time ago that in the microbrew world, there are brewers out there using super yeasts to get their beer up to 19%+, just because they can….is that what sparky and sarah are doing? i just don’t get their target, unless they are cynically creating frankenstiens for the sugar hungry american public? i’ll take my 13% barbaresco any day over this stuff. cheers!

    GARY!

I actually watched the bonus episode first, before I looked at this one, haha. Awesome show, and the most over the top thing in my life(and most likely everyone else’s) is fear. “Fear is the most powerful enemy of reason” (al gore). The second one becomes afraid of something they can’t think clearly, and the fear becomes an overwhelming, uncomfortable, and often inescapable feeling…something you can’t get around. I didn’t mean to be way transcendental about the QOTD, but I just thought I’d contribute something meaningful πŸ™‚ Pumped for Friday’s show!

  • Tommy Mack

Dave Kingman and Ken Phelps…..I love it! Facebook…..that sucked! And I actually went there and now I’m gonna get a bunch of spam.

QOTD: The only thing that might be considered “over the top” in my life is the 9 cats. It would be more optimal to have 2, which is what I had before my husband entered the picture. He doesn’t have any preconceived ideas about ideal limits, and he can’t say “no”. Maybe he’s the “over the top” thing in my life. Anyway, “over the top” can be fun.

As regards Jay’s comments, I think it will be interesting to see how you progress with this format; a winemaker’s class would be interesting to some, but I’m not sure that that’s the point of this show.

  • I agree with the others that Jay makes some valid comments. At some point, you have to decide just how much of the show will be pure entertainment, what the informational/educational level will be, and how you will strike a balance between the two. That being said, it is fine for some episodes to be all entertainment and fun, while other episodes can be focused on the serious oenophile.

Also consider that if someone has already watched 277 episodes — or even a tenth of that — they might be looking for more variety and a more in depth treatment of the subject. These people may have been looking for and open to one thing when they were newbies here, but perhaps they want the show to evolve along with their knowledge and experience.

As WLTV gets longer in the tooth, Gary, I think your biggest challenge will be wither you want to be a Fruit Bomb show that has the most appeal to casual win drinkers and a the CKC set, or the Old World fans who are looking for ideas about what to add to their newly expanded wine cellar.

I like the format, but I’d also like to see it grow with me and with the rest of the audience.
