Great show! I love watching you get blind sided by a wine that brings the THUNDER.

QOTD: Lets try malbec & riesling or what AnthonyS said

  • wine lush

    QOTD: Verdejo & Mencia

Great show. Nice to see a wine from Victoria get a good review.

What is this!?! Shiraz? Viognier? Fruit-bombs?!! What are you trying to do? Introduce wines I would love?!?

QOTD: I love pepper so how about a Zinfandel / Grüner Veltliner! Whoo-BABY that’s some spicy wine.

exciting show gary. do you think many california syrah producers use the northern rhone trick?

This show was a lot of fun. I too was on the 2002 – 2004 Shiraz bandwagon. Still a favorite, but the leader of the pack.

QOTD: 80% Zin 10% Petite Sirah 10% Viogner

Meant to say, Shiraz no longer the leader of the pack.

Great show Gary. Good stuff. My palate has (perhaps temporarily) grown tired of fruit bomb aussie shiraz, but a couple from today sound interesting.

QOTD- Monastrell and Spatlese. Add some zing to the big, dark red.

QOTD – Rioja/Gewurztraminer blend. I think it just might work.

  • PhilB

QOTD: Let’s keep the same family in the same bottle : White Grenache with old vine Grenache noir could make a cool blend!

Did you know that some producers in Cote Rotie are getting experimental with their blends, putting as much as 20% viognier (the maximum allowed by law for a wine to still be called Cote Rotie) in their wines? Check Domaine Corps de Loup’s 2004 Cote Rotie on that!

I’ve not had a Cote-Rotie but have seen several Shiraz-Viogniers & have always been hesitant to try one, sounds like I have another reason to give them a shot.

QOTD – Pinotage and Verdejo, a little bit crazy, but who knows?

Not my thing; the best Aussie Cote-Rotie knockoff I ever had was South African. But the Chapoutier sounds intriguing.

QOD: maybe use a white Rhone to flesh out cabernet franc? Or keep it in the Loire and use chenin? I don’t know, I’m not really sure where to go with that one, it sounds a little alchemical. Haven’t they pretty much quit blending white grapes into Chianti these days?

    Greeting Mr V!

I was so psyched by your Terlato experience, I ordered some before I watched the rest of the show!

QoTD: Jees, hard to say….. why not a Malbec and sauvignon blanc?

By the way, long ago you said you’d be splitting QPR analysis from your actual scoring, does that still hold true? Just curious, though having done a lot of tasting side by side with old episodes, I do think I have a better take on your tastes. If you ever make it out to southwest Pennsylvania, we’ll have to have a tasting!

Great ep…. back to doing what you do best. You know in this ep, I think I realized what it is that I like the best about learning from you. It is the whole kangaroo thing, rainbow skittles, etc.. that you do. You give these off the wall descriptions that stick and come into my memory as I am tasting the vino that carries similar profiles. I love that. THANKS!

so, QOTD: what about something like old vine zin red and a young wht zin… ???

    Great episode Gary.

QOD – Pinot Noir with a touch of sweet Chenin Blanc (Quarts de Chaume style). Can you imagine the aromatics?? Followed by the silky red fruit, mmmm…

lotta love for the Shiraz/viognier blends. QOTD: Sangiovese and pinot gris

  • maggiej

Whew, glad to see some winners after the drizzle (as opposed to thunder) yesterday.

I have never had a shiraz/viognier blend, but I can’t wait to try one. I adore Viognier and would like to see it pared with some red italien varietals like Sangiovesse.

Way to go GV!!! 4 for 4 wow that hasn’t happen in a long time!!!

On the listing it describes these wines as a Shiraz/Syrah blend?

QOTD: Cab Franc/Tocai But I have to agree with Kahuna Petite Syrah & Reisling sounds interesting!

QOTD: Funny you should ask … I was just wondering how Zinfandel would blend with Viognier.

  • BruceP

QOTD: Cab Franc and dry Pinot Blanc if I’m being creative, or perhaps Mourvedre and Gruner Veltliner. Still pretty hard to beat the classic Rhone combos. Grenache, Roussanne, Marsanne. Yum. As far as blending 2 reds, how about syrah and cab franc?
