QOTD: Due to the price points of good Burgundy, One. A a 92 pt (WS)Gevrey Chambertin and quite frankly I preferred the DuNah from the RR Valley that we popped to compare it with. You’re right, the old world pinot has a dusty, barn yard, rock, mushroom, cherry flavor component, whereas the Cali Pinot had a more jammy, fruit forward mouthfeel. I’m really into Bordeaux over Cali Cabs, Loire over Cali Sauvignon blancs, Chablis over Cali Chards (and don’t get me started on a good CDP right now) but haven’t quite made the switch with Pinot. Unfortunately the price of a good bottle of Pinot from the Russian River Valley is so high right now, I haven’t purchased many for every day enjoyment. That said, the reviews of today’s wines haven’t sold me on entry level pinot/bourgogne. Although I’m not into horse-ass wine, it might make a good t-shirt.

Gary, I am really enjoying this series of educational episodes. I may be patting myself on the back since I believe I suggested something like this.

QOTD: None, yet. I just received 5 bottles of french PN from WL. Unfortunately, 3 of them are the Danjean which you pretty much panned. Can’t wait to smell the vomit. Remember in elementary school when some kid threw up in the classroom . . . I was the kid that threw up just because I caught a whiff of the ick.

    QOTD: over a 100

Don’t fear the Barnyard!!!! WooWee one up for the old world folks!!!

  • Great show! It’s nice to see the evolution of Burgundy and love the discussion points.

QOTD: I was lucky enough to work in Burgundy so I have had quite a few. There’s almost always that subtle, earthy/barnyard/slight cheesy quality that is unmistakable for the region. I’m actually surprised that the “cheese” descriptor doesn’t come up very often on WLTV. But, hey, “horses ass” may be right in there.

QOTD: Zippo the chimp. Not because I am bias, but most of the pinot I have ingested over the years has been state side.

Only 3. The most memorable but definitely not a QPR was the Clos de Tart Mommessin 2003.

QOTD- I’ve had 3 entry level PN’s from France this year. The 03 Joseph Drouhin Bourgogne Vero, an 04 Les Vignerons Réunis à Buxy Bourgogne, and the 00 Domaine Bruno Clair Marsannay Les Longeroies. The Vero and the Marsannay were both well made and good.

I enjoyed this episode…….well done. I’ll definitely look for those last two.

Now you’re speaking my language… QOTD: I’ve probably tried about 6 or 7 Burgundy Pinot Noirs and have another 6 or 7 in my cellar that I’m dying to get into. Just recently had a 2003 Domaine Alain Burguet Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Favorites Vielles Vignes at a restaurant that was phenomenal – a stunning array of fruit, but in a restrained un-bomb-y way that just danced across the palate like a ballerina. Coincidentally, just bought a $20 Bourgogne as well – 2004 Camille Giroud Bourgogne – that I’d planned to pop tonight. I’ll let you know how it goes.

QOTD: Zero…and to my knowledge I have yet to have a wine containing Pinot Noir. I have simply stayed away from it due to the price explosion around that particular grape.

That being said, I have had Pinot Grigio, Chard, Gewurtz, Riesling, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Malbec, Tempranillo, Carmenere, Merlot, Grenache, Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre, Shiraz, Carignan, Graciano, Cortese and Prieto Picudo.

Gary- Great episode. You know I am trying to like the PNs.

QOTD- I have tried at least 3 from Burgundy and I’m trying to develop a taste for them as I like old world generally, but the PN is tougher for me to like. All I can say is I’ll keep trying.

Very cool. I’ll definitely look for the last two.

QOTD: I’m not sure I’ve tried any pinot noirs from France yet, BUT I’ve got an entry-level Burgundy in the wine rack right now that I’m going to try soon. Maybe today!

Another informative and still fun show. I see the energy level dropping a little. It will be fun to see how you hold up on your fifth taping.

QOTD: Maybe 20 or so. My buds are big burgundy fans. We tried one the other night that you swear upon first opening it was made from dirty diapers. After an hour or so, you understood how complex and brilliant these wines are.

Love the poop!!! and in two different wines! FAB!!

QOTD: zero…I’ve had Bordeuax from Burgundy region but only Left Coast Pinots and I’m not a big fan of them, not that they are too pricey, they are just too jamey for me, love the grape but hate grape juice and thats what I taste in CALI Pinots. But you have my interest peaked since I love old world wines!! I will for sure try to seek out one of the last two!

Thanks again for bringing on the thunder!!

Another great episode. Would love to see this done with other regions of france . Seems to be some great value in these wines.QOTD 2 and I liked them both way better than most of the American pinot I’ve tried(which I’m not a big fan of). Thanks GV and WLTV crew.

  • QOTD: 4 or 5 red burgundies. I have no clue about how to read French burgundy labels so I have strayed away from them. Each of my red burgundy tastings was brought to me by a French citizen or a French ex-pat. I can’t tell you what the producer names were or what the appellations were…I only remember a big deal being made about white burgundies from Montrachet — but I think that those were chardonnay grapes not pinots.

I love it when you talk about Rap….you speak from such a position of authority…have you been watching too much 8 mile?
QOTD – Not a lot, best one so far was a 2002 Louis Latour

two or three, probably … not my go-to wine or anything, but I do remember having an interesting Faiveley Bourgogne that I got for under $15. I think I even have one around the house somewhere. Fun.

Yes sir Big G, Nice EP. I’m getting into the barn yard action. I’m liking the Dirt/Terroir. QOTD: 1. Aloxe Corton, but more to come very soon. Keep Killin it Big G.

  • Dean D.

QOTD: 10 to 12 Bourgognes! I love the soft & silky aspects of the tannins that can come out of a well made Pinot. I like some of the New World Pinot’s from Oregon, but France still has the best Pinot Noirs for my palate. Good episode Gary!
