I don’t know how many Pinots from France I’ve had. More than I can count. But I’m noticing the same thing Gary has–Burgundy is now competitive with California, and who’d a thunk it.

Did I hear some slurring around the 6 minute mark? 😉

When are you going to do the Spring or Howell Mtn Cab tasteoff, while wearing overalls, a beard and something else country-esque….

I’m def buying some of those vomit wines…mmmmm.mmmmmmmmm.mmmmmmmmmmm

Oops QOTD – 40ish, mostly village wines

Only recently discovered your insightful and enjoyable approach to wine. Now I’m hooked. The problem is my cellar is in Italy and I’m stuck in Little Rock AR, where finding your suggestions is at best difficult and generally impossible. Was lucky enough to live in southern France so got to try plenty of Bourgogne Pinot’s and love the barnyard & veg, old world all the way for me.
Watched your palate education show a few days ago but don’t recall you demonstrating sniffing the horses arse, just have to make do with the mental image.
Go big on the barnyard & poop; visit Vaucluse or Gigondas (if you haven’t already).

Gary, great episode. I really never gave much thought to french pinot before, I might have to try one.
QOTD to the best of my knowledge zero, zip, zilch, nada!

Great episode. Finding value Pinot noire has been always a frustrating challenge to me because at the 20$ range there is at least a 50% that the pinot noire is not that good. Most of the great Bourgone pinot noires that I had were at high-end restaurants and the store ones that I picked were disappointing!!. So far I only had tasted 10 -12 pinot noires from Bourgone…

  • Gary:

Thanks for bringing the thunder with the Bourgogne Pinot Noir. Old world Pinot Noir is difficult to beat especially anything from Arnoux. At 25 bones its a steal. Once you taste a great Burgundian Pinot Noir, there is absolutely nothing that can compare. I have had many great Pinot Noirs from Burgundy. I am especially fond of Gevry Chambertin and Vos Romanee. Very silky and elegant wines. It is what Pinot is all about.

at least 8 that i know of, but most were entry level wines that didn’t really knock my socks off. like a couple others have noted, for 20-30$, i usually find some other wines that i’m interested in. still looking though and the arnoux has definitely piqued my interest. had the 2002 patrice rion savigny -les beaune and that was delicious.

This epiode is just what I was looking for. I am looking for a good, everyday Pinot that has some personality – and because the price is right, I don’t feel guilty whenever I open it. Been to Burgundy once – and had a meal with a bottle of LaFlaive premier cru Puligny Montrachet (forgot the vineyard) and a 1985 Gevery Chambertin (also forgot which vineyard) that changed my life. These wines were so good, it made me realize what people refer to when they say that great Burgundy is like finding the Holy Grail. There is nothing that compares –

QOTD: I have had at least 50+ burgundy reds, and always hope for the same experience that I had in France – it is fleeting, but when it hits, there’s nothing better.

From France, I think I’ve had about 15 Pinot Noirs, 11 from Burgundy, and 4 from Vin De Pay Docs. Only 3 that I know for sure were from Cote De Nuits. I had a 2005 Bourgogne that I think may have been in the top 3 wines I have ever tasted, and it was from a single vineyard between Vosne Romanee & Nuits St. Georges and only $20, actually less that $17 with my discount! Ask me about it if you’re a whole foods shopper. Gary I work for Whole Foods wine now! Lemme know when you wanna gimme that big promotion and have me work for ya in NJ. I love Burgundy! Gary, you look likea young Stanley Kubrick, bring on the thunder! Thanks for the rad wrist bands!

Thanks for putting out another fun and educational episode! I’m fortunate enough to have access to 2005 Marechal Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee Gravel at my local liquor store here in Ma., so I’ll try it this weekend if the weather calms down somewhat.
QOTD: If I had to guess, I’d say I’ve had around 15-25 different Borgognes between various tastings, parties, and personal purchases. I like many of Louis Latour and Louis Jardot’s efforts from ’99 on. One of the best wines I’ve ever had was a 1er cru wine from Nuit St. Georges (I think is was a quite young but amazingly delicious ’03 Clos de Mugnerets?). It was truly amazing! The string of solid to great vintages should encourage more people to try even the villages level wines.

2, both large production Bourgognes. That’s about all the Burgundy we get here in Des Moines. And I’m not the biggest Pinot fan so I haven’t set out to find any too hard.

  • QOTD: Gary, I have actually only had two Pinots from France, or Burgundy for that matter – for a stupid reason… Cost. Today’s episode is a reminder that there are good Bourgognes out there for value, and I should try to seek them out more often. My only burg worth remembering was a heck of a steal!

2003 Louis Jadot Cote de Nuits Villages – “Le Vaucrain” – TWENTY BONES!!!!

Earth, sour cherry, raspberry reduction sauce, and MEAT! The meat/cherry combo is rocking my world right now – especially in the Rhone region.

Awesome episode, Gary. I love the educational aspect, man! I haven’t really jumped into the old world poop style that you get normally from Burgundy, but that being said, my zeal for great wine will not stop in the new world!

QOTD: I have only tried one Burgundy, and was not a huge fan. Lots of muted fruit and dirt/poop with almost a dusty smell on the nose. My wife hated it.

QOTD: Not many. Probably around a half dozen in the past three of years, mostly at restaurants. The last one I bought was a Louis Jadot Bourgogne. Good stuff actually. I’m a fan of Jadot wines in general, and the Bourgogne did not disappoint.

  • Yay! SF Vaynerglass! There sure were a bunch of Cali Pinos at that meetup.

QOTD: To my knowledge, I’ve never had a Pinot from France. But I haven’t had much Pinot from anywhere else either. Most of them are just too expensive for their quality, in my book. I would have tried the Hammond you recommended in ep 200, but it was sold out long before I got to it. One of these days I’ll sample a bunch of Oregon Pinos, but they’re not at the top of my list.

QOTD: My area doesn’t have that much in the range of Cali or new world Pinots so most of the times that I drink Pinot Noir it’s French. You want a number, well come over here and ask me to my face, yeeeah. What now?! And while I’m telling you the exact number of pinots I’ve had from France we can enjoy some Dai Gin Jyo, some Japanese Bely A wine, some Koshu and of course…the uni.

  • Metal Dave

    QOTD: Lots

It is interesting to me how many people have never tasted a Burgundy, yet have had lots of New World Stuff. It’s like a rock and roll fan saying he’s never heard Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin. All of these new world wines have their origins in France and in order to understand them, you need to understand where they come from.

Also, as regards to pricing. Because the American government has encouraged the devaluing of the dollar against the euro, the prices are about 30% higher than they could be if the dollar and euro were more even. Oh well, at least it makes everything really cheap when I visit home!

Gary, maybe a red sancerre episode???

Both the Franck Millet and Gerard Morin bring the Th-th-thunder!
