Rafanelli is my top choice since it is hard to get and fun visit when in Sonoma. Storybook Mountain is always nice. The 2003 Ridge Indepence School, a GV 92 IIRC, was great.

I’ve had at least 50 zins. A quick check of Cellar Tracker shows I only have 10 now. I need to buy some.

oh man, i had a liver & truffle mousse last month and my brain just about exploded. i was pretty jealous watching this…

qotd: hmm, good question… not sure. i found some ’00 ridge costal range (i believe that was the name) zin blends recently on the cheap, and they were awesome. how many have i had in all? probably over a dozen, as we took a trip to sonoma and got down and dirty with the zin…

I have only had a few Cali Zins but plenty from Australia. Let me know how much hate mail you get about the foie gras. I’ve never had it before & missed it at the Chicago party.

    Great Episode GV,

The first Zin (mostly Zin) I ever had is still a fav- Marietta’s Angeli Cuvee…2 weeks ago tasted a Late Harvest Zin from Bella that kicks ass!! They let the grapes hang 2 weeks longer and found magic….I find turley’s zins to be overrated and hence, overpriced. Trentadue’s La Storia is another favorite

    Great show Gary!

They should just hook me up to a Zin IV – they are my absolute favorites right now. Love the Ridge Paso Robles, Peachy Canyon is always a good buy, Opolo is good too. Norman Monster Zin will blow your mind but again, it’s a *huge* bomb. I have a bottle of the Prisoner that I’m waiting to crack open…Next bottle to try will be the Gravity Hills tractor.

Never really had foie gras before – I think its a texture thing with me. But I think you probably had enough for all of us 🙂 . Have a great day.

We have had lots of Zins. Two that stand out for my wife and I are Rombauer and Chiarello. Both are consistently two of our favorite wines of all varietals.

    Very good episode Gary.

QOTD: I haven’t had many Zinfandels, but I remember I did enjoy the Gnarly Head old vine.

QOTD: Not had a huge amount of Zin, a little bit scarce over here in the UK for my liking. Best Zin ever – a few months ago I found a 1997 Peachy Canyon Westside Zin in my collection which I forgot I had, so of course I had to pop it. Freakin’ awesome, one of the best wines I’ve had in the last few years, period.

Gary, great show today, I have only had Foie Gras once and I am with Chris Mott on the stuff, not really for me, I may try it again in the future but not a top priority.
QOTD- I don’t think I have tried a red zin, but I will at some point.

Foie Gras, I can’t help but think about pairing it with Napa Valley Rombauer
    Zin….desert, desert, desert.

Great show GV. I am both a Zin and Foie Gras fan so this was awesome – I haven’t paired the two yet but now I will certainly try.

QOTD: # of Zins (past year): 8 All time Fav: I have a few, one is a Zin blend called The Prisoner by Orin Swift (CAN YOU PLEASE TASTE THIS ON A SHOW), Duckhorn Paraduxx (but a little pricey for what it is) and the Neyers Tofanelli Vineyard Zin.

  • Great show. I’m a big fan of Elyse’s Zins. Their Korte Ranch Zinfandel is killer.

QOTD – tried a fair number of zins – my fave for the money so far is Kenwood, but Ravenswood is always a good safe bet: yummy stuff, and bang for the buck, one of my fave wines from California

In other experimentations, I’m currently trying out a 100% PETIT VERDOT!!! Yeup – got my hands on a 2004, Pirramimma (Aussie, McLaren Vale) P.V. – never had a 100% P.V before, and was really curious. Good stuff, I quite like it – reminds me a bit of Cabernet Sauv – however, it seems to be pretty big on the attack, yet not as huge as you’d expect on the mid pallette, I wouldn’t go so far as to say ‘hollow’, but it certainly doesn’t hold up with its initial attack – wondering if this is characteristic of the grape, which is why it is almost always blended? (anybody?)

I love bug red zins. The Old Grandpere vineyard from the Sierra Foothills produced wonderful wines. Renwood has some graftings. Noceto has the fruit and makes kick ass OGP Zin. Has to be my favorite among many.

QOTD: a tiny little winery west of Paso Robles called Zin Alley where I had a tasting on my Cali trip a couple months ago. Really not cheap for zin ($42 at the winery), but also pretty perfect. I’m not a huge zin guy, so I’ve probably only had maybe 20 of them (quite a few more if you count Primitivo).

Let’s see: Alderbrook, Bucklin, Chateau Montelena, Chateau Souvrain, Cuvaison, Everette Ridge, Frog’s Leap, Lambert Bridge, Mill Creek, Peju, Pezzi King, Ravenswood, Ridge, Rombauer, Rosenblum, Seghesio, St. Francis, Mauritson Rockpile…..

QOTD: Bucklin – it’s a field blend of very old, perhaps the oldest, gnarly vines in Sonoma. Finishes a little hot sometimes, but nothing “fake” about it. Real wine.

I have usually paired Foie Gras with Sauternes or bubbly, the problem is my wife is off of Zinfandel right now. Maybe next time I’ll pop a Zin for the heck of it – EPH – and see what happens.

  • Bossman

    #60(ish) as relevant as #1.

I’m a Zin virgin, I’m now going to save myself for marrying it with foie gras.

I’m a foie gras virgin but generally like livers (calves w/onions and bacon, rumaki…..hmm, maybe I’m just a bacon fan) I’ll stay pure until I have some zin available.

Good to see Mott, he’s a natural with a face just made for radio (just kidding).

The foie gras spit reminded me of trying to gross out my siblings at the dinner table(behind ma and pa’s back of course).

I picked up a boatload of Thundercats for a song on ebay but it appears the seller is traveling, when I finally get them I’ll snap a few pics and get them out to you.

Why not zin with foie gras? I’m not a big Emeril fan but foie with only sauternes is a “food & wine police” thing.

p.s. I also like reggiano on seafood pastas.

Haven’t had too many zins–two we really enjoyed, Gravity Hills Tumbling Tractor and Farleigh, were bought based on your recommendation from a really early WLTV episode. We served them to my daughter’s “we don’t enjoy wine” in-laws and we had to open three more bottles of each. Thanks again for a great show. I look forward to trying the Ravenswood!

QOTD: This is right in my wheel-house. I drink a lot of red zin. I’m from Sonoma, so I feel obligated to promote the step-child of varietals from California. My favorite has to be the 2003 Rosenblum Rockpile Zin. Bought a case of it before Wine Spectator named it their number 3 wine of the year. In addition to being a good buy, it tastes pretty good too. Probably too over the top for many.

Tried some Brazilian Rio Sol Parellel 8 this weekend … not bad!
