Nice show Gary!! Have had too many different Zins to count, one of our favorites to have around.
Had the Dancing Bull last year, I agree very fake, I’ll say terrible.
A Favorite Zin: I would have to say La Storia Zin from Trentadue winery.

  • Good episode, Gary. I am a big fan of the Hartford zins, but will be the first to admit that the blend you had does not stand up to the single vineyard zins, inlcuding my favorite Hartford effort, the Fanucchi-Wood Road (esp. the 2004.)

QOTD: It’s hard to pick an all-time favorite zin, but the Hartford 2004 Fanucchi-Wood would be right up there, along with the Rosenblum 2002 Rockpile Road, Martinelli 2004 Guiseppe & Luisa, Ridge Lytton Springs (any year), Storybrook Mountain 2004 Mayacamas Range, etc., etc.

Gary, some day you should brave a zin port and/or late harvest zin…

  • PaulT

foie gras, not exactly very “P.C.”, but it does taste good…

QOTD: honestly, I’ve never had a zinfandel. they’re not very big over here in europe, but I’ll try some if I get the chance.

My life is full of zins…….favorite so far is the Rosenblum Rockpile Road in good yrs. The ’04 is gonna be premium in a few years based on a bottle opened a few months ago. You nailed the Hartford….have felt the same way about their zins, very good but not exciting. Napa sounds like it was a blast this weekend.

Boo foie gras! I’m no vegetarian, but what they do to geese to make that is just too cruel. Boooooo!

But thanks for the Zin show…I’m a big fan of the varietal. I’ve tried had the first three (agree with GV on all three, except I like the Ravenswood a tad less than he does), and I don’t think I’ve seen the Hartford around. Guess I’ll have to look for it to give another Zin a try.

    QOTD:
    1) Favorite Zin – Hendry, Block 28. Just fantastic (and much better than the Block 7, which is also good).
    2) Hmmn…triple digits; need me to really think harder? Like I said, I’m a big fan. I’d say about 40% of the American wine I buy/drink/try is Zinfandel.

  • Matt

I am watching this show for the first time. I own a liquor/wine store and have found myself taking notes on arguably the worst monday this year. Thanks for cheering me up. My favorite zin right now is Earthquake out of Lodi. It has a lot of port qualities. Check it out.

Diggin the show format. I don’t drink a lot of wine with meals but love to pair it up with some snacks.

QOTD: can’t remember, I’ll have to seek one out this week

Love Zin – nice episode Gary.

Foie Gras – wow. You’re going to have PETA and Charlie Trotter after you. Besides, talk about bad for your cholesterol …!

QOTD: Tied – between ’97 Ravenswood Dickenson Vineyard and ’97 Rosenblum Napa Hendry Vineyard.

Loooooooooove zinfandels! Lots of fruit, sometimes a good jig of spice and pepper, and just nice on their own (which is how I generally drink reds). Ravenswood does make some nice zinfandels. I’ve been to a couple of tastings that have featured their wines, and they all tend to the sweet side. I like that, though, so we’ve got a few bottles in the home cellar.

QOTD: I’ve had more zinfandels than I can count. My current favorite is xyzin’s 50 and 100 (fun to compare how the aged vines make a difference), but I also really enjoy the zinfandels by Four Vines, particularly Biker & Maverick. Oh, and another that I’ve stocked up on is 2003 Mara Zinfandel Marquise Reserve Luvisi Ranch.

Is anyone else here taking notes on everyone’s favorite zins? I sure am! My plan is to have a list ready next weekend when I go wine shopping. 🙂

Looking forward to trying the Peachy Canyon and Ravenswood.

QOTD: The Prisoner rocks the house! Always enjoy Sky zins (the 2002 is out, but haven’t tried it it – recovering from bottle-shock, not). How many have different ones have I had? Zin City!

QOTD: Eric Ross 2000 Occidental Old Vine Zinfandel

I’d probably say we’ve had a good 40+ Zinfandels. We spent 10 days in the Napa/SF area and in that time hit up lots of places like Ravenswood (heck, we probably had 6 different Zins there alone). Almost everyone one had one or two Zinfandels (Peju, Alexander Valley Vineyard, Kenwood, Ferrari-Carano, Eric Ross, Frog’s Leap, Simi, etc.). Then you tack on ones we’ve picked up at the wine shop or grocery store.

My wife is a veterinarian so she seriously frowns upon foie gras… though she is not crazy about veal either but a man has to draw the line somewhere!

What exactly were those thundercats doing to each other??

QOTD: Zin is probably the type of wine I have the least experience with. The few I have tried were way to over the top for me. Iâ??ll have to give zin another chance.

I doubt Peachy was trying to drug up Hartford pre-show just to outshine it. Trying to take a co-star out a la Tanya Harding.
    – what’s with this font style – has it changed ?

QOTD – I can’t remember the last time I had Zin. seems a long time ago but I have had some when I was more CKC …but I will seek it out next time I go shopping, maybe even with some foie gras ?

  • MikeyB

qotd: I like zins. love the gravity hills tumbling tractor – that zin rocks for 14 bones. never had the foie gras though.

  • QOTD: I’m never had a Zinfandel by itself…I’ve had it in a blush blend, though. Awesome blend.

QOTD: Rafanelli Zin is the fave- my wife is a Zin head so it is common we have at least 2 a week.

Zinfandel! One of my favorites, great show.

QOTD: Can’t really say my favorite zinfandel because the different styles are all good. Here are some I’ve enjoyed recently:
Four Vines, Cedarville (awesome Rhone like), Sin Zin, Bogle Old vines, Dancing Bull Zin (not so much), Dry Creek Heritage (nice mellow zin), Dynamyte Zin (not so much), EOS zin (okay), Gnarly Head old vine (nice one), Klinker Brick (one of the best, FRUIT BOMB), Earthquake Zin (too much!), Murphy-Goode Liars Dice (not so much), Pepperwood Grove zin (yeww), Perry Creek ZinMan (not so much), Renwood Old vine (okay), Rosenblum Zinfandel Vintners XXIX (okay). I guess I like Zinfandel!

QOTD – as many others here, Ridge Lytton Springs and Geyserville. For one still on the shelves, the Geyserville 03 is great — have most of three cases left.

  • Palmer

QOTD: a friend brought a mixed case of Turley Zinfandels to a group ski weekend a while back and I remember each and every one of them completely blowing my mind. can’t remember which specifically was my favorite but I’m a huge fan of Turley Zins. I’ve probably had about 20 Zins or so including that experience, but have just ordered some Sierra Foothills Zins and plan to seek out some more.

Solid episode. Keep bringing the thunder.
