    Hey Gary,

I’m a long-time lurker, posting for the first time. Wanted to let you know that googlereader didn’t post this episode. It’s 9:30 and still not posted.

Anyway, QOTD — I haven’t had much luck with zins. I think I’ve only had 2 or 3 in my lifetime, and they were pretty forgettable. I’ll keep trying, though.

    And foie gras? Meh.

QOTD: Elyse 2005 “Korte Ranch” from Napa. Beautiful and balanced juice, and the word elegant actually applies.

Have had too many zins to recall, though my favorite value zin is from mass-producer BV, though have always been tremendously fond of Ravenswood for the price as well; good call there!

  • What’s with all the sound effects on the videos? I thought some birds got in the house. Last week I kept pausing the video to answer the phone and whoever was calling hung up after one ring! I’d play the video and they would call again! Maybe I will have to watch with the sound off next time and guess at the results.

QOTD: I think I’ve had 2 or 3 zins and can only remember that one of them was a Rancho Zabaco which had too much alcohol to my taste.

By the way, Gary, my wife thinks you are crazy. : )

QOTD: Rosenblum, by far, esp the Rockpile Vineyard. Love some Seghesios, too, and, believe it or not, Maryhill (in WA State) occasionally makes a pretty tasty zin, also! Dose WA wines are comming on strong…!

I’d say I have tried 30 zins. I keep going back to Ridge Geyserville. Have had the ’03 and will most likely pop the ’04 tomorrow night thanks to this vlog. Had the Stryker at the NYC vayniac tasting. Enjoyable but a little hot but most zins share that same profile IMO.

Good use of ‘Meh’. One of my favorite everyday words! Even bought this shirt.

Peachy has been making nice zins for awhile now… we noticed them a few years back but have moved on to other wines. I’ll have to pick some up again. LOVE that you pair it with foie!! This is a combo I never would have thought of, I will have to try it. Unusual pairing. I’m with you, foie is awesome. There’s a reason we are at the top of the food chain 😉 As Mario Batali says: ‘I’m quicker and smarter than you, so pass the salt’ LOL

  • Darlene O.

Great, great, episode, Gary! Love Zins and love the Foi!! QOD: Favorite Zin is from a little local winery. Fellipi Zin…to die for. How many Zins have I had? Don’t know. More than a few. Not a zillion. How about ‘a bunch’. Love the old-world wines, however, I also like Zins.

Nice to see a zin show!

QOTD – We have had hundreds of zins over the years. They were the first serious red wine that I was hooked on and I still come back to this varietal.
Favorite zins – of all time – Original Lyton Springs Winery Sonoma County 1987 or 1988 bottling, Biale Old Crane 1993 (or same early ’90’s Old Crane), Ravenswood Sonoma Cty. early ’90s, say 1990 (had this in the late ’90s, wasn’t expecting much and this showed great that day), Nalle ’95, Quivera ’93 (tasted this as a library offering at the winery and ended up taking a bottle to dinner), Elyse Morisoli ’97, Rosenblum Rockpile and R.Sauret (both 2003) and Carlisle Carlisle Vineyard ’01.

Love all the episodes Gary. Keep going strong!

Nice good range of zins – from the mass produced to the higher end zins. Thanks.

QOTD – Zinfandels were the wines that opened my eyes to single vineyards and the depth and character that can be placed inside a bottle. One was a Lytton Springs Zinfandel (pre Ridge) (I think it was a 1984) and a 1990 Ridge Sonoma Zinfandel that was pure raspberry and black pepper heaven. I later had a 1994 Ridge Lytton Srpings that was wonderful – like lilac rain. Before then,
I had been schooled on Italian straw bottle chianti, dusty and dry barolo, boring Bordeaux (no classified growths mind you) and the candy-like white zinfandel. So now I owe the wine-buying debt on my credit cards to those zinfandels.

    GV,
Freat show and a huge Zinfandel fan here! Also, we share an eye for talent – I got Beckett as my 4th starter, and Figgins as well -I’m sitting in third but climbing.

QOTD: Tried 30+ zins and my hands down favorite producer is Storybook Mountain. Really liked the 2003 Estate Reserve as well and have my last bottle of 1999 Reserve Estate saved up for a special occasion this fall. Most zins fare best young but the Storybooks have held up nicely although 8 years may be long enough.

I first discovered Zinfandels in 1992. Since then I have had many, many, and even more many Zin’s. I’ve enjoyed them from Dry Creek, BV, Clos du Val, Rancho Zabaco, Ravenswood and whole bunch more that I can’t remember. I have not tried the Peach and will have to seek it out. Is there anything that fois gras doesn’t pair with?

QOD: 2004 Ridge Lytton Springs is my fave. Big fan of the ‘field blend’ element. Have had ~20 from the 2000 to the current vintage.

  • Josh Beckett is having a great year. Sox fans (and other concerned parties) don’t Veritek’s influence in the battery.
QOTD: I really like Ridge’s stuff, several months ago I had their ’03 Three Valleys, and it was excellent after some decanting. Does it still count to many even if it is only 75% Zin? Rosenblum, Cline, Ravenswood makes really good stuff. Oh, I also enjoyed a St. Francis paginini Reserve a couple of months ago. The ’01 Peachy Canyon Eastside Zin and their Incredible Red are fun too.

Favorite Zin is Turley Hayne, followed by a close second with Martinelli Giuseppi and Louisa. I’m on the mailing list for both, so I drink a lot of Zins. Too many to count.

Good show. First met pate on Mallorca, Spain where every bakery and grocery store will cut you however much you want from the big loaf of pate kept around (usually unrerigerated) somewhere in the store. As my daughter said: “It’s a flavor explosion!” Good pate makes any bread and any wine better.
QOTD: I have been a big fan of the Adelaida product for several years now, and the Zin is always very interesting.

  • fatherthechair

Great timing! I have loved Zins for a few years (Ravenswood actually got me started on Zins and is still one of my favorites). However, just last night I was visiting my wife’s sister and her husband, and he broke out a bottle of Martinelli ’05 Jackass. I saw the alcohol level on the label (I think it was 16.5 or 17%) and expected the Godzilla effect, but was surprised at how the fruit and pepper stepped up to the alcohol. I have to state that as the best one that I’ve ever had. However, for now I’ll keep on buying Ravenswood at almost 1/10th the price. As far as how many different producers I’ve had, about a dozen.

OK, nevermind about the font – that was my computer acting crazy.

Still looking forward to the cork’d improvements.

My favorite zin? Oh, I dunno. Dont’ really have one. I certainly do drink them, though. I enjoy the Edmeades when I’m feeling ‘fruity.’ I’ve probably had maybe 10-20 different zins in my life. Then again, I’ve just started in the whole wine thing.

Question for you: Where can I get the foie gras? I LOVE that stuff!

  • QOTD: Never had a Zin, so I don’t have a favorite. Still new and have not had too many wines yet.
