QOTD: No, can’t say that I have. But I’m going to check out a new local wine shop this weekend. I’ll see what they have 🙂

Great show Gary! Love the prices.

QOTD- I don’t think I’ve ever had Dolcetto. I’m ordering some now though.

  • Jeff O

Great show. I was looking for a little somethin’ to replace the usual Chianti with pasta meals.

QOTD: I’ve only had one and that was 2005 G. D. Vajra Dolcetto D’Alba, it was cheap due to some label damage so I figured that I’d try it. I enjoyed it, it was a little more fruity but still very old world if I remember correctly. I really should start keeping a wine journal.

One question: Is that the type of wine that should be decanted to open it up a little if it is still a little young, or is it open enough since it’s meant to be drunk young anyway? I decanted mine just for the heck of it…

BTW – caught your picture today inside the B-section of the Wall Street Journal!

QOTD: Had Dolcetto many times. In fact, one of our cats is named Dolcetto, because he is a little sweet one. Actually, he is a rather large cat, so I guess he should be named Dolcone or Dolcione or Dolciano, or something like that. (Any Italian speakers out there?)

Favorite Dolcetto (apart from our cat)? My wife and I are partial to Vietti’s Dolcetto. My wife says it smells like gardenias. I have also enjoyed Einaudi’s Dolcetto (which I believe is from Dogliani).

You did mention that Dolcetto is meant to be drunk young, and I want to emphasize that. I bought too much Dolcetto at one point, and it didn’t keep as well as I had hoped. That beautiful floral thing doesn’t seem to last past a few years.

Gary, Diggin the geo-facts about Dolcetto!
I got a little lost with the nose described as a “sweaty jock strap”. I’ve never actually “sniffy sniffed” a sweaty jock strap before! If anyone ever asks I’ll tell em you said it smells like Dolcetto!

QOTD: Nope, but I’m going to get one right now.

    Great show.

I love the Piemonte. When I die, I want to go to Piemonte.

QOTD: Of course I have had it. Would be kind of hard to pick of favorite because in my experience, most of the producers in this region are really good at what they do. Though I’ve been meaning to try the Marziano Abonna Dolcetto Dogliani that my usual shop carries because the Barbaresco I had from this producer was really solid. I’ll probably bump it up on my list of wines I want to try.

Outstanding show! I’m on my way to my local retailer for his bi-weekly wine tasting and while I’m there I’ll be looking for some Dolcetto!
While I watched this episode I used MS Virtual Earth to look at Piedmont and Alba. Cool! You can see the vineyards west of the city.
I also went back and watched episode 212. Dude!!
FWIW, if you do a wine tasting for the iPhone choose something widely available across the country for those of us who live in states where it’s illegal to buy wine from out of state and have it shipped in. (One of the few downsides of life in AZ.)
QOTD – give me an hour.

That was a very intersting episode. I obviously love Italian wines and it’s just so hard to find decent values except for puglia and sicily. Nice to hear about the dogliani region having the fruitier wines because I thought everything from the piedmont was old world. Maybe sometime you can do an episode on primitivo from southern italy. I think it’s a great alternative to overpriced Zin from California.

Good job Gary, love Dolcetto. Can’t say I have a favorite, though. Probably just need to drink more of them, I’ll get right on that.

WOW……What a great show. I’m really big on Italian reds and these four were all good juice!!

QOTD: I haven’t had a Dolcetto in many years, but it’s time to renew my acquaintance with these.

This show really got me pumped for the Italian pinot noir.

Havent tried the Dolcetto but will look for it….

  • Hay gary,
Here’s my Iphone bid – perhaps you have this in the works for cork’d but its way too hard to find a wine you’ve tried (I worked hard to fill in 5 or 6) so why not change the interface to ‘know’ something about wine – for example – integrate it with winelibrary’s database, then turn it in to a digg for wine – put a badge on the wine – thunder it or something. There needs to be a zeitgeist of what people are enjoying and a counter to the staggering problem of selection in the wine store- there are thousands of bottles, where’s the Amazon for wine so I can read reviews before I buy?
Well, of course there is you, but you can only drink so much, and some of your stuff is hard to find. I think providing a very simple, easy to use interface is the key. More wines need to be entered and more ‘action’ of people contributing a ‘digg’ and even a short review is better than the myriad of ‘vintage, producer, year, varietal’ sheesh- give me a label I can spot in a store and a ‘try it’ rating and let me make up my own mind.
Oh, make it cell phone friendly, I tried to pull up the vayner database in the store once, not good…

    Cheers

Very inspirational show. Probably 70% of the wines I drink are Italian and I’ve been wanting to try some Dolcetto for several months but keep pushing it down the list. You’ve pushed me over the edge and will certainly be seeking it out this weeked.

    GV,

Just a word of encouragement and thanks for all the helpful information you give from episode to episode. I live about 40 min out of Paso Robles. As a wine newbie, I’ve haven’t strayed very far from what I’ve been able to taste locally. Seeing your show has been a real education and gives tremendous exposure to wines that I would not otherwise dare to invest in. Thank you very much! Keep up the great work. I’m afraid that since watching you, my wine wish list has grown larger than my budget! Am I the only one? So thanks for the reviews. Keep them coming! And if you get a chance to review some Justin wines – like their Isosceles – I’d love to see how you rate them. I had their 99 and it “brought the thunder!”

Great show. Four out of four winners. I’ve never been much of a fan of Italian wines for some reason, although I keep thinking of the antifreeze/wine scandal from about 10-15 years ago. Maybe I expect to die if I drink much Italian wine. Will definitely seek out some dolcetto soon.

It trns out that I can’t even spell my screen name right. Actually I misspelled my real name once on a spelling test, so I guess it’s par for the course.

    Informative to learn your “secret.”

QOTD: No I have not and I guess the reason would be that I’ve never read much positive press about them when I have the opportunity to have a nice Barolo or Montepulicano. I guess I will need to order some and try it.

No gravatars is really depressing but not enough to to bother me. Spanking the Saints on natl TV will work.

I’ve gone a little G-Man, but I am back and very happy you let the cat out of the bag. More people should know about this grape, although
I hope prices don’t go up now. You are afterall the freshmaker.

QOTD: Luciano Sandrone Dolcetto, soft so so soft. A totally complete package. Like this beautiful girl that’s hot, yet sweet and proper.

Hey Gary, Yes, Dolcetto I had by pure luck. Was on business in NYC, picked a bottle on the wine list out of the blue at Po’ in the village. Great wine with the pasta dinner. I was thrilled you coverd it on the show. Now the word is out!

You got me, Comrade Vaynerchuk. Barbaresco – check, Langhe nebbiolo – check, barbera d’alba – check, but no Dolcetto I think.

I don’t think they have any here, so if there’s any Altare left by the time shipping season arrives, it’s in there.

You don’t like Italian restaurants? At all? Northern Italian, southern Italian, nothing? And you’re in Jersey? I think that deserves its own show. What’s the story there? Bad experience?
