It was a side-by-side of 2 bottles of Laroche’s Chablis St. Martin 2002. They tasted both, and said the screwcap retained a lot more fruit and freshness, but didn’t age with as much complexity. They don’t think a screwcap would be a great closure beyond about 5 years, for wines that require longer ageing, because oxygen transfer is a necessary part of the process, and that’s what cork is best at. Forgot to comment on today’s wine! Love Albarinho, one of my favorites. However, I think you’re wrong when you predict big things for it here in the U.S. Not enough of it planted over here. All the fad wines have solid vineyards stateside. Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot, Syrah…

Nope, mark my words – the next Big Thing will be Viognier.

Guess I’m a ‘serious tool’ — while I think the project is most interesting, it doesn’t match the hype. Not sure if anything could have. Judging from all the positive responses, I guess my drizzle on your parade won’t dampen your enthusiasm.

Great news, it’s great to see projects like this, which get the people involved. I’m curious to see what the price of admission is for this venture. Also, it’s great to see you push albariño; I’ve been enjoying it for a few months now, and I find it to be an incredibly versatile wine.

finally you told everyone GV… i thought this was going to be the surprise… Thank you for letting all of us in on it back when you where in Napa for the WITS… do you know how hard it was not to tell!!!

Anyway, this is a pretty cool deal… I hope to be able to participate when I have time and am not busy with my own wine! Harvest is crazy here already. Pinots coming in next week as well as Chardonnay.. The Sav Blanc is fermenting away! 2007 is gonna be a good year!
