  • QOTD: I’ve had a few 100% Cab. Francs… the 2005 Frederic Mabileau Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil Les Rouilleres, the 2005 Damien Laureau Anjou Clos Frémur, the Vinideus Cabernet Franc to name a few… The Vinideus was the only one that I liked. That Bourgueil that you loved so much was just too darn vegetal for me. Cab. Francs are too vegetal in general for me. I never did eat my vegetables growing up (I threw up in third grade when the cafeteria worker made me eat at least two bites my green beans before I could be excused for recess), so maybe that’s why? But I love asparagus and broccoli and others now… So I don’t know. But I generally really don’t like wines that taste like vegetables. Which is odd, because I love most old world wines, and love things that are really stinky. I DO like these juices you can get that are made of 100% vegetable juice, though. Weird… to me, the wines taste like rotten vegetables, not fresh ones. I have a few 100% cab francs left, but I think I’ll let them live in the cellar for a few years; I may eventually develop a taste for them.

Cool cool. I’ve been meaning to visit some of those places next time I’m down there, love the Cab Franc. How about a Chinon episode?!?

Sure had many Cab Francs, mostly from Cally and Long Island. Yes the Mottster rocks.

I’ve had the 2004 Larkin Cab Franc, which i thought was excellent, if a little in the Napa cabernet style. Great fruit, subtle vegetable and herb notes, light tannin. Also, one I do not reccomend is Lang+Reed “Chinon style” Napa Cab Franc. Really light, nothing there.

1 Cab Franc from Moon Mountain. Nice quote about mint chocolate chip cookies without the mint and the chocolate chip, I’d but a tee shirt.

QOTD: only 1 from Chinon which I really enjoyed…vegetables galore. Will be picking up more Cab Franc to diversify the cellar. I love Mott!

QOTD: Only one that I know of, and that was only mostly Cab Franc (the Mt. Veeder Red from Vinoce). I’m with you on loving the bouquet, Gary, so I will be looking for some LI Cab Francs (and maybe some Chinon) pronto.

Let’s remember people these are Gary’s thoughts. All wines are different for all people. Does anyone truly enjoy a vegetle character in their red wine?

  • GrapeStuff

MOTT – you bring the thunder, man.

QOTD: I don’t think I have ever had a cab. franc. But in the spirit of the 365 challenge, I will try one. I don’t have high-hopes that I’ll dig it, but I’ll give it a shot.

    I love the Mot man.
    Never had a cab franc.
Color looks a lot lighter than savignion. Is that the case with all cab francs?

  • I think Chris Mott is a great guy. He has been very helpful to me and has answered a number of questions I have had regarding video. He is more of an asset than many of us know…keep up the good work, Chris! You are appreciated!!

Love Cab Franc as an element of wine . . . not so big on that being the whole wine — though to be honest, I haven’t had all that many — 2 altogether I think. Thanks for continuing to bring the thunder, GV and MOTT!

    Never met a Mott I didn’t like.

QOTD: I never purchased a Cab Franc outright, but one of my wine clubs includes it in their shipments so there’s a few sitting around collecting dust. Maybe I’ll pop one to check it out.

Vayniac Cab people – my wife and I visited Sonoma and Napa over Labor Day. There has been a heat spike and the growers are getting nervous. Hopefully our 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon won’t taste like raisins!

    Gary,

I’m glad that you featured LI wines, but hoe can you seriously rate Cab Franc without tasting Schneider, the premiere Cab Franc producer on the North Fork? I’ve also tried Waters Crest Cab Franc, but Schneider rules the day. They just released their new vintage last week.

  • Wow, this Episode rocks, esp. the “…you could have been something, if you taste like something..” That really made my day :)))

  • Hey Gary
Fun episode, Cab Franc does rock. I love it, it is really big in Virginia as well and we have some producers doing a fantastic job. I agree the true varietal character should be expressed, one small problem in Virginia though is that since it grows so well, that it can sometimes have a tendency to be overcropped and become TOOOO herbacious, don’t get me wrong, love the herbs and the green veggies in my wine, but that is all you get sometimes, no fruit and thin. That being said you need to seek out some Virginia Cab Francs and do a little tasty taste because we do have 20+ of the 100+ producers in the state doing a great job with the grape.

QOTD: Cab Francs in lifetime thus far – ball park probably 36-40 different ones, I know I have doubled up on a few.

SHOUT OUT OF THE DAY: LOVE THE MOTT!

QOTD: Probably have had 10 or so Cab Francs – had several this past weekend at a few wineries in the Finger Lakes that weren’t very good – thin and didn’t have the flavor profile of a good Cab Franc.
