Hey Gary, since your are coming to LA try my 2 favorites in the area. Lucques is like you are in the south of France with great food to go with it. AOC is a great wine bar experience also with great food. They actually are owned by same people and are both great places to hang when in LA.

    Great show!

One of the best restaurants in Sonoma County is Flavor Bistro! In addition, they offer 50 – 60 wines by the glass. Give it a shot!

    Loved the bottle swig!
Some of my favorite quotes ever:

“If you’re a squirrel you need to seriously think about buying this wine!”

    “Sweaty inner-thigh….”

QOTD: “The Fiddler’s Hearth” in South Bend, IN. Its a lovely Irish pub. If you’re into beer and Irish culture you should give it a try if you’re passing by.

QOTD – Toscanini in Amsterdam, great Italian food. Djago’s in Amsterdam, great Indonesian food. Haven’t been out in the UK recently, so come back to me on that….

Nice wines, except the stinky farmer one. I have to try more Portuguese.

QOTD: Favorite new restaurant so near my home we could walk (if I weren’t wearing nice shoes) is Vernon’s Steakhouse – it’s black and white elegant with a wonderful piano player and lots of older R.C. Gorman paintings which the owners took from their home, and it’s cozy and dark and friendly. In general, the only red meat I eat is prime rib, but I pretty much always enjoy it and there’s always some left over for my friend Robin’s German Shepherd, Oscar, who just successfully completed extensive heartworm treatment.

In Santa Fe even the old restaurants often seem new as chefs never seem to stay long at one place. Casa Sena with a wonderful garden patio, the Old House at El Dorado – impeccable service and faultless food, Inn of the Anasazi – gorgeous presentation – lots of rectangular plates in varying colors – incredible food.
Wines are always incredibly overpriced in Santa Fe, but one copes.

  • Unfortunately, the Portuguese wine as sold out as soon as the episode came up on e-mail. Always looking for good Portuguese Red wines as they are so affordable. Getting more in I hope!

Favorite new restaurant; well there are several: Redd in Napa, Willi’s Wine Bar in Santa Rosa, other than my Sushi restaurant most of the restaurants in Tidewater VA suck.

    Hey Gary,

Got you. Tempranillo reigns in Spain; not in Italy. Berço do Infante is a pretty good choice. It’s a steal; it has always been. I agree with you 100% about Portugal. Furthermore, one has the possibility to taste dozens of local grapes hardly ever cultivated anywhere out of the Iberic peninsule. It’s a pity we do not have more of Portugal available in the US. Here in Brazil we are fortunate to have a broader availability of Portuguese labels from many regions. Try everything made from Paulo Laureano and Anselmo Mendes, just to get started….

    Cheers,

QOTD: Catalan Food and Wine in Houston, TX
Last time I was there we had the 05 Sea Smoke Southing for $65. They’re wine list is always changing and the pork belly with Steen’s cane syrup rocks. A must try in Houston.

I loved the “stinky inner thigh” comment. That was one of you best. I was listening with headphones and knew it was a nice day there because birds were chirping out your open window. It’s all about the Portuguese wines!

There’s a great Iranian kebab place in Dublin called Zaytoon. It’s perfect for when you eat at Patrick Guilbaud’s Michelin Starred place, then go get all hammered at the pub and need something to fill the old gut at 1am before stumbling off to bed.

Interesting show once again, Gary. I have had some Portuguese red wine thaht was quite good but it was about 17 bones. I am very intrigued by today’s wine. And a Pinot Grigio that sounds really interesting as well. Wow!

QOTD: Best new restaurant I’ve tried lately in Cleveland (where I live) is Lago in Tremont. Very good Italian food with an Italian (mostly) wine list that is very nice. Also, the mark-up on their wines is very, very reasonable. You can visit anytime. 🙂
