  • Gotta try new things; just had an Emilio Moro 2001 Ribera del Duero Tempranillo. I’m weak on Italian wine experience, so this bottle was an eye opener. I just kept smelling it and diving the nose into the glass. I finally got around to drinking it and I’ve become a big Tempranillo fan due to this bottle. Black cherries, vanilla, forest floor. Nice stuff for a $20 bottle. Now I have to figure out what to try next since this bottle was probably just a starting point.

Gary; respect. Loving the show and sharing the love.

Anchovies. I don’t like anchovies. or…. DIDN’T like anchovies (preconceived notions?)… but I was in Costa Brava… in a seaside cafe… with $5 bottle of Cava (speaking of bargains)… with my honey… does it get any better than that?

I tried making Strawberry wine, mostly because I can get California strawberrys in Az. but I can’t buy California wine grapes here. It came out pretty well but it’s not Cabernet

QOD: I was very surprised by a wine my wife has been drinking on business trips while dining at Ruth’s Chris…Sokol Blosser’s Metrina III. I opened up my mind to an Oregon blend and was glad I did.

For some reason, this red appeals to women who typically only respond to whites. It may be the fruit, it may be because Sokol Blosser is run by women, who knows.

    BTW…Go Jaguars !!

  • Talley

QOTD: took your advice and tried an albariño for the first time recently (from Rias Baixas). Loved it! will certainly search out some more now.

    Happy New Year GV!!

QOD: went to Rosh Hashana dinner last night and I think the favorite new try would be my aunt’s matzah ball soup. I used to hate it when I was a kid.. tasted like chicken soup with a mound of mush in it. Hers was very simple and austere: plain broth, short floating noodles and a large Matzha ball. I was impressed and actually liked it.

What I did NOT like tho was the gefilte fish.. ugh not fun.

QOTD: I always try to get something on the menu that I’ve never had before. Anything to expand my palette (since I just started a new job and can’t start buying from WL yet, but will begin soon, I promise). Latest new thing? There is this god-awful “value” wine that I buy to make mixed drinks with. I would never ever think of drinking it by itself but today I decided, what the hell, let’s see what really, really bad wine tastes like. I’m still trying to scrape the taste (melted skittles boiled in sugar water) off my tongue…

Very hard question. Guess it would have to be the Mumm Napa Brut 25th anniversary sparkling. Never tasted something that made my mouth dry and wet and the same time. Really an eye opener, now I understand what you mean by that.

Good luck on Sunday, hope you don’t get sad!

    enjoy your weekend!
