Sorry I lag behind but you have to learn how to pronounce Nevada. It is NOT Ne vah da. Forget what Bush says as he can’t pronounce anything without help. It is Nev aa da with a long a as in Ala baa ma. You don’t say Ala bah ma… I hope.

If you think Sierra out of the bottle is good – out of the tap is awesome. Nice show — guidance is always good since some of the craft beers are starting to resemble the over-manipulated wines of california. In Pennsylvania, you have to buy a case (although they are working on a six pack law) so if you make mistake – it’s expensive. The pumpkin ales are fun.

Huh. Not a huge beer guy (once a week or so), but I really enjoyed that. Just don’t go replacing WLTV with BLTV too often, ya hear?

    Hi Gary,

First time commenter – love the show!

Just tried a Belgian beer at a pub in Milwaukee – Tripel Karmeliet – which was great. I’m much more of a domestic guy, though, so I’d love to put in a plug for Bell’s Beer out of Kalamazoo, Michigan (went to college there). His summer seasonal, “Oberon” is a special favorite.

There’s a beer that my husband had in Paris (but I think it was a German or Belgian beer) that I think you would find very interesting. It’s called Eku Kulminator (forgive my horrible spelling) and it’s like 13% alcohol and I SWEAR it smells and tastes exactly like soy sauce. That’s really the reason to try it just because of how different it is.

I love beer. I’m crazy about wine, but its nice to see the change of pace. Beer is becoming a more complex beverage with the amount of really serious craft breweries around.

I tune in here for the wine shows, but would like to see the occasional beer show to keep me up on whats new in beer.

  • I am new to wine and I am new to Wine Library but I am not new to craft beer and I really enjoyed this episode. Please do more beer episodes as there are so many fabulous craft beers available out there these days.

  • Love this show. There is a group of us at work that do an annual beer exchange. 24 of us sign up to bring a case of beer (no AB or Miller, etc.), and we go home with 24 different beers. The catch is that a beer can never be brought twice.

If you do another show, try Tetley’s English Ale (tall blue can). Smooth, creamy ale. MMmmmmm.

the proper way to poor beer is directly down the middle of the glass without tilting the glass. helps get rid of more carbonation and therefore allows you to drink more without getting bloated.

It’s great to have a beer episode. After many years of drinking wine I am learning about craft beers and enjoying them a lot. I agree that you can taste world class beers for a fraction of the cost of world class wines. The flavors are great and they go well with food. I still drink a lot more wine than beer, but that may change. Thanks for doing this.

Hoorah! A beer episode. As a home-brewer who has visited all over Asia and Europe, and tried to consume every local brew I could find, I am very happy to see the beer episode! Well done and keep ’em coming.

gary and alec, loved the beer episode. as a home brewer (who makes some GREAT home brews), i enjoyed the technical information, and just wished i could sip those 3 different brews.(i have had sierra nevada on many occasions, and it always hits the spot !) i also enjoyed gary’s attempt to taste and describe the beer in a wine sort of way. all in all, it was truly entertaining, and informative, and still true to the vayniac way. alec is very knowledgeable about beer, and i would love to hang out with both of you some day to drink and enjoy some wine, and some beer.

  • Hells yes a beer show! Awesome idea guys! I went to Europe this summer and took advantage of my country hopping to taste 15 separate beers in a weeks time. Holland, Spain, France, Belgium, German, Portugal… I just started to grow a curiosity to beer flavors. I hate wine, but after my European beer experience and coming back to Wine Library, I’m now open to giving wine a shot–just taking a little longer for some reason. I’m on the fruit wine side still, I won’t lie.

I’m very likely on the opposite side of everything you say you like about wine and FOR everything you hate :). The palette will grow…

Cool show, guys! I love the way you’re mixing it up a bit, though dig the wine thing mostly, of course. I was delighted, as a Californian, that you started with Sierra Nevada–it’s a big thing, I think, between my Boston pals who’ll only drink Sam Adams, and me loving SN. And the Weyerbacher–sounds great, so I’m gonna hunt for it when I’m in Delaware with the inlaws next week–great timing!

  • That was freakin sweet, how about the Gluek’s HoneyBeer?! That is definitely a craft beer, and at $9.99 for a $30 case everyone can afford it.

So good to see you not limiting yourself to just wine. The SNPA is a classic choice and considered to be one of the great gateway beers. The Weyerbacher pumpkin is truly one of the top 3 or 4 best pumpkin ales out there. You could do another entire beer episode on Weyerbacher; they do 4 beers that they age in Oak barrels and they are all absolutely as good as any bottle of wine. And if you ever are looking for a beer that’s kind of like port, try to find a bottle of Three Philosophers by Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown; it brings some major thunder.

  • I wish they sold those kinds of beers in Australia! Our restaurants don’t tend to move to foreign beers and always stick with the standard popular beers, but I would kill to taste those beers!

Like I said I’m behind and catching up…now this is awesome!!!! Bringing beer to a wine show. We all spent our hard earned dollars on lesser quality beer and eventually acquired a taste for beers other than the big names (or at least I did) and now a lot of us are doing it with wine. Good times and please throw a beer show in every 327 episodes or so.

Tremendous show!! You know, I have to say that I was going to skip over this episode. I just didn’t think a Beer Library TV show would be that great. But Alec knocked it out of the park!! Big time kudos to Alec and thanks to GV for an interesting, different, and very entertaining show. I am sitting in a hotel room in Geneva, Switzerland at the beginning a five week business trip and this made my day.

    QOTD: ?

I loved this episode. I hope we get another one in a couple of months. Looked like lots of fun to tape. Hey, next time you need a cheese taster call me. I’m not allergic. Maybe next episode you can review Smuttynose IPA.
