Disappointing wines today. In general, I haven’t had much luck with Gavi, although once in a great while I come across a Gavi with surprising richness. For relatively inexpensive Italian whites, I tend to gravitate toward the big 3 of Campania (Fiano, Falanghina, and Greco) or toward Sardinian Vermentino. The whites of Friuli can be amazingly wonderful, but they also can be amazingly expensive. If you get the chance, try some Jermann “Capo Martino.”

Dude, Californication — the BEST show on TV right now. I wasn’t sure about it at first since I hate the whole “I’m a depressed writer” bit (’cause I am one and all, I don’t get nearly that much ass, nor do I drive a Porsche), but the show is really going above and beyond that premise and really hitting its stride. Funny enough, just last night I was walking on 7th Avenue, less than 24 hours after having watched the extremely disturbing yet completely hilarious sex scene in the most recent episode, when I passed right by Evan Handler (Charlie the agent), walking the other way! I threw water in his face…just kidding.

“Californication” — are you kidding? It can’t even light “Mad Men”‘s menthol cigarettes, let alone compete.

Gary bro – you endear me to you by your butchering of the word “Principessa”. As an opera singer I’m obsessive-compulsively bound to note that the “ci” in Italian diction is pronounced “chih” as opposed to “sih”. Also, the double-consonant is always hesitated on and emphasized. Effectively the word will be (phonetically) “prin-chih-PES-sa”. And please know that I’m totally not hatin’ on you, I’m just here to rock!…the wine world.

QOTD: I’m rather tickled by anyone who says that “we sure could use some of the founding father’s wisdom right about now”. I encourage anyone who puts any stock in that idea to read “A Brilliant Solution” by Prof. Carol Berkin, the leading authority on Revolutionary Women and one of the top minds on Early America. Then they’d realize that if the founding fathers were here today, their brains would explode.

I found some Gavi today that was in a 375 ml bottle so I guess if it is not to my liking much won’t go to waste. It is Bersano 2003, I will give it a ‘whirl’ after I watch today’s show.
