Wine Spectator went over the top with their rating for the vintage of 2000 Piedmont, others say it was too hot and the wines are bombs. Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV visits 3 of these wines to see whats up!

Wines tasted in this episode:

2000 Oberto Barolo Vigneto AlbarellaBarolo

QOTD: I haven’t tried Barolo. They, at least the ones on today’s episode, appear to be out of my price range. My palate is still developing. Only recently have I come to appreciate red wine, so I don’t think I’m ready for this wine at these prices. If there’s a really good Barolo under $20 I’d love to give it a try. I totally dig on the “try everything” philosophy.

Thanks Big G, Love the episode. I’m giving it 93 points, could have gone a little higher, but it only had really 1 good QPR.

QOTD: Yes and it’s Parusso Barolo Mariondino 2000.

Never had Barolo but anyway I’m new to wine drinking,
I was looking at the prices and it seems a little high for my wallet.
im in the under $20 range 🙂 maybe later I will get me one to try it out.

I’ve never tried barolo but from what ive seen today and other episodes on this wine, you make it sound very intriguing and interesting. Your wine recommendations are usually right on the money. You Definitely inspire me to try different kinds of wine that i have usually pass by without looking at during my trips to the local wine shop. Keep up the good work gary

Have only had one barolo in my life. It was a bottle of Pio Cesare 1998 at a restaurant in Las Vegas. Talk about kicking up the price point…

Will have to have some more. Have always enjoyed chianti and would like to try more Italian wines. Also, I have had a number of nebbiolo wines from both Washington and Oregon that have been very tasty. So I figure with the extra knowledge of the grape from the wine makers in Italy, it should be that much better.

Great show. I have never had a barolo but will now. I have my dayoff tomorrow and will take a trip to Spec’s here in Houston. I will probably try a lower end bottle (under $20) and if the descriptions are tantalizing enough maybe even a $50 one. I am always ready to try new things.

QOTD: OF COURSE! ONE OF MY FAV WINES ON EARTH 🙂
funny that you didn’t make a final statement about the 2000 vintage hahaha
thank you Gary, I love this kind of episodes! 🙂

QOTD: Gary you nailed it. I haven’t had a Barolo yet, though I have wanted to try one. The biggest issue is the price they are and not wanting to buy a “loser.” When I only purchase 3-5 wines a year that are over $30 due to my limited means, I want to know that I am buying a wine I will thoroughly enjoy. I will seek out the Oberto, but find that wine prices in Hawaii are often significantly higher than on the mainland. Thanks again Gary.

    Very good show Gary!

QOTD: Yes for sure, I was on a small Barolo tasting last week.

  • I’ve had several, but not in a way that I could really dig in and appreciate them. (Have enjoyed them at large high-end wine tastings). I’ve never bought one….would consider buying tha Albarella now, though.

QOTD: I have only had a handful of Barolo’s but of them my favorite one to date was probably the 1997 Stefano Farina Reserva that I had with a little Taleggio about two weeks ago. I have a half dozen 2001’s stored away in the cellar for a few years down the road…and I am very excited to see how they progress in the years to come.

Now can we expect to see a 2000 Barbaresco show? Or maybe a 2002 Burgundy show…I like seeing some aged wines on the show. Thanks for a truely great show…and all of your effort to keep so many of us entertained. Good luck in buying the Jets….

    BAROLO!!!

QOTD: I’ve unfortunately only had one Barolo, but given my modest, recent college grad budget, I’m lucky I’ve had one at all. We sell it at the Italian restaurant in which I work, and it’s a 2003 by Stefano Farina.

I used to work for an old school movie producer – with an old school attitude to the expense account… which meant that he wasn’t really producing movies any more. Anyway, two or three days a week we would lunch in a little Italian restaurant around the corner from the office and drink a bottle or two or sometimes three of barolo. The food was okayish – I think they were really Turks pretending to be Italian – and the Barolo was not so expensive – though still much better than anything I was used to – and I still don’t have the most developed palate… but I can instantly recognise Barolo from merest sniffy-sniff-sniff. It brings back great memories and makes me think I should dig out my old pal again.

QotD: Nope, never had a Barolo but it is high on my list [along with Amarone]. Hell, I had my first real Brunello di Montalcino last night. I’m sure there are many others like me who simply can’t afford to throw the dice [like you said] on expensive wines except for special occasions.

  • Awesome show Gary! I have never tried Barolos, so I’ll definitely have to look for one and give it a try.

Thanks for all your hard work bud! 🙂

QOTD: It’s a bit on the pricy side for me to be familiar enough to nominate a favourite. The ones I had, I wasn’t bowled over by, to be honest, but I came to them with very high expectations from some big Borolo fans. I intend to drink more of it and get to know it on my own terms…when I’m rich!

QOTD – I don’t drink enough Barolo’s to have a favorite really, but I do like the 2003 Damilano Barolo for one that is reasonably affordable ($23-ish). I have a 2001 Damilano that I am waiting to have so I’m hoping that will be my new favorite. All in all these wines just get a little too pricey for me to drink them on a regular basis.

Have been drinking and buying Barolo since the ’70s. Checked my records [something I highly recommend for new wine lovers – just throw some notes, labels etc. in a folder and keep it somewhere) and found I had 4 bottles of Ceretto Bricco Rocche 1978, paid $14/b when released in ’83 and drank it over the next 10 – 15 years. Found it to be phenomenal. Th ’78 vintage was rated 20/20 by the NYTimes back then. This was the price point for these wines at that time so you can see they have held their value over time. As a comparison Ch. Cos D’Estournel ’78 was $17/b and Ch. Lynch Bages $20/b, rated 18/20 NYT – compared to their 2005s at $185 to > 200/b. Haven’t had many of the more recent vintages lately but did have the 2001 Rivetto Giulin which was OK – for newcomers to barolo who don’t want to spend a lot this is available at WL for about $30 – a good starter, ready to drink now for barolo.

All time favorites thus far have been the ’78s of Ceretto, Giacosa and Contratto. HOpe to have some new favorites with the 2000 or 2001s.

Great episode. Unfortunately I am in the same boat as most who have posted, haven’t had the pocket book to support trying many Barolos, but I DO love them. Very complex. A symphony in the mouth.

QOTD: Have not had a enough to have a favorite.
