  • Gary, quit bottle shocking my bottle of wine by shaking it around! That 2003 Saint Jean Du Barroux Lâ??oligocene sounds great… I hope it’s one of the top 50 wines on Wednesday. 😉

QOTD: Dinner at Grolla in NE Portland with my girlfriend, who at the time had a very sensitive diet. They do a “Chef’s Taster” menu that is incredible… the owner of the restaurant comes out and interviews you with what you like and don’t like, any allergies, anything you’re in the mood for, whatever… with that knowledge, they go back and develop a five-six course meal around what YOU like, and you have no idea what’s coming… you don’t really “order,” they just decide what they think you’ll like, describing what it is when it arrives, and man did they nail it for both of us! And our courses were all totally different, so we really got to try 12 things. And for each course they paired a different wine, and each time it was such a perfect pairing. This meal wasn’t really for a special occasion (other than her leaving for a week), but it’s the meal that made it a special occasion that we both will always remember. It lead to one of the best nights ever! I’m almost afraid to go back because it may not be as good…

Great silent finish today, Gary. Oh, so clever. QOTD: I guess that my favorite dinner was at Commander’s Palace in the Garden District in New Orleans. Every mouthful of food was divine.

  • Wine Rep Lurker-MR. T

You pulled me out, finally. I’m a wine rep in Washington State and enjoy the show for bringing the excitment back to me to help convey to my customers.
Favorite meal: Dinner with my wife at Inn at Ship Bay on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands. Mount Eden winemaker dinner with Jeffrey Patterson.

Gary – Great show, loved the Triennes Saint Auguste (an absolute steal). I’m in for 6 bottles of the Saint Jean Du Barroux L’oligocene. Funny you mentioned winebid.com – spent entirely too much money upgrading my collection of Italians this weekend; although no $500 bottles…

QOTD – I’ve eaten in fine restaurants all over this planet (Tokyo to Rio, Paris to Hong Kong) and my top 10 meals have all been in Italy. Very, very hard to pick a favorite, but I would have to say it was at a tiny place in Cinque Terre. No, I will not divulge the name. I’m an only child and I do not like to share 🙂

A little Osteria near Ponte di Rialto in Venice. I hope to go back there with my ladyfriend soon (preferably with a 90′ Masseto). That said, I’m heading to French Laundry tomorrow for my b-day so needless to say the Osteria has some serious competition. Good show today – keep it rolling…

QOTD: A small local New Orleans style restaurant has a blackened catfish po’ boy with lettuce, tomato, and spicy mayonnaise. I love fish, I love spicy food, and this is the perfect combination of the two. They also have the best wine and beer selection of any place in town, so every Friday night when we go out for dinner I get it along with a new wine to try.

  • James Poole

QOTD: The best meal I ever had was the Ribeye at the Great Oak, inside the Pechanga casino. My wife and I each had a steak and asked the sommelier to pair it with any wine from their cellar. The wine was so far the best we’ve ever had, but the steak eclipsed even that!

QOTD: One of the greatest meals that I have ever had was when I was in Napa about 5 years ago. A group of 4 of us dined at Greystone, the Culinary Institute of America’s training center. I can’t remember exactly all the courses involved in the meal but each one, with the wine and company around the table, was outstanding!!!

Thanks for bringing the wines of Southern France to our attention. I will have to start trying them.

  • My sharp-eyed aunt brought that very same du Barroux to thanksgiving dinner – boy did that bottle go quickly. QOTD – 1776 Steakhouse, brilliant steakhouse right near my house in little old Rehoboth Beach delaware, last year. 12 oz. New York Strip, dry-rubbed with cardamon, pepper, cinnamon, and Kona coffee, then white truffle oil + parmesan mashers, and a nice vintage port afterwards. I’ve since tried to replicate that dry rub and I just can’t get it as perfect as it was that night.

Nice ep. Gary. Iâ??m going to search out the St. Jean Du Barroux.

Best meal: If I had to pick one, I would say Stonehill Tavern in Dana Point, CA. Started off with a trio of lobster, main course was Berkshire pig with a black truffle jus. Paired with the 05 Kosta Browne RR Valley. It was an awesome night.

  • Sue Z.

QOD – My friend cooked a traditional Italian dinner at his home complete with hot & cold anti-pasta, a first course lobster ravioli with his interpretation of fresh calabrese tomatoe sauce, salad, and entrees including squid ink pasta, hunter’s stew, gnocchi with pesto, and shrimp scampi a la Brian. The food was paired with lovely Poggio al Sole and delicious Amarone. Dessert? Absolutely no room:-(

My best meal of all time would be a filet mignon from Angus Barn in raleigh NC, with a great cabernet enjoying it with my great family and friends, and in my opinion the best salad in the whole world. They also have an award winning wine celler.

  • The Adam Bomb

QOTD: Last year’s Christmas dinner. I, a holiday feast rookie, cooked for my skeptical grandparent’s a standing rib roast. A perfect medium-rare gained their trust for many dinners to come. But it wasn’t the beef that made it the best meal ever, it was their reaction.

You’ve brought me out of the lurker status with this one….

The greatest meal I’ve ever had was at Blue Point Seafood, in San Diego. We enjoyed a wonderful 8 course meal accompanied by an even more amazing bottle of 1997 Chateau Figeac. I have rather high standards and am hard to impress due to the fact that I serve in a fine dining steakhouse. I really couldn’t find anything wrong with the service and quality of food… this rarely happens

    Love the show

  • Kipp Bodnar

QOTD: hmmmmmm I would say Fried Soft Shell Crabs from Crooks Corner in Chapel Hill, NC

    great show today….

Great episode today GV! I’m gonna try and seek out that Cotes de Ventoux wine! And can I say, what a week for the Vayniacs- widget contest on Wednesday, $500 bottle of wine tomorrow! I love it!

QOTD: My favorite meal was in Florence at a restaurant called the Academia. We went there twice because it was so good! I had a chicken breast baked with sausage and other stuff inside and this beautiful white table wine from Tuscany that was petillant.

  • AmaroneMonster

    Great episode!

Best meal – I would hesitate to choose one great meal, but a couple weekends ago I had eight people over. We prepared a 9 course meal and took down 12 bottles of wine over the course of 7 hours.

What’s better than eating and drinking with people you love?

  • A phenomenal meal I had was freshly killed venison roast with potato gnocchi and Cuvee du Vatican Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Sixtine 2003. Reviewed it on Cork’d, too! http://corkd.com/wine/view/15005-Cuvee_du_Vatican_Chateauneuf_du_Pape_Reserve_Sixtine

QOTD: The BEST ever? Hmmm… My Mom’s spaghetti & meatballs on any night I was really really hungry. Nothing better.

  • QOTD: Meal I most enjoyed….Camping out with my best friends family and his buddies from Chicago for Halloween on the Mississippi River. His brother cooked about 15 of us whole carmalized onions, baked potatoes, and the best chicken breasts still on the bone that anybody had ever had, most of us thought it was better than any restaurant. To top it off there were two huge cast iron dutch ovens filled with homemade peach and cherry cobbler.

  • Htownboots

QOTD: It is a toss-up between tasting menus at the French Laundry and Cyrus in northern CA.

QOTD Best meal I’ve came at Corsa Cuccina at the Wynn Casino. My wife’s cousin works there and he hooked my family up with an incredible family style meal of their best apps, salads, and entrees. Their knowledgeable staff also helped by bringing us bottle after bottle of superb wine that went perfectly with the tremendous food. The grilled pizette with mushroom puree, robiola cheese, and white truffle oil was probably the highlight.

The Post Hotel in Lake Louise Canada. Just a incredible rustic/romantic setting. Had the Game plate with Elk. Was not a wino
like I am now so can’t wait to go back there as they have an amazing cellar.
