  • Todd Smith

I’m a huge fan of the Allan Scott Sauv Blanc. The past 2 vintages have been spectacular.

  • QOTD: Brie and Prosciutto. I think pears need to be a part of the party, maybe a wine with a strong pear flavor would do it.

Awesome show, Gary. Loved the interaction with the guest, and I think you might have just sold me on the book, too.

QOTD: steak and portobello mushrooms with a little bit of onion and garlic, all ground up and fried together in a pie!

  • Thanks to everyone who came out to WL on Saturday — was great to meet other Vayniacs, not to mention more of the WL staff. These are seriously some of the nicest guys you will ever meet. The experience there is so comfortable and friendly it makes shopping for wine in NYC look about as pleasant as root canal.

Mislead: You’re off to a great start — keep reading and drinking consistently. All there is to it!

Social: Thanks man! not sure I’ve ever heard the book compared to Into the Wild, but what the hell, I’ll take it. Most people tell me it’s Kitchen Confidential for wine, though someone else went so far as to call it the love child of Anthony Bourdain and Sarah Silverman. Your comparison is a little more flattering, thanks.

Big Nick: Yup, there were some balls involved, but a lot of it was just naivety. If I’d really, truly known what I was getting myself into, I never would have done it. But in my case, ignorance sort of worked to my advantage…good thing I wasn’t writing a book about S&M or something….

Craig: Thanks man! Hope you enjoy it!

Micha: Oh yah… all the wine critics / writers out there watch and read each other, probably for equal parts education as well as looking for an opening to attack. It’s a pretty competitive space, where everyone (GV probably being the exception) feels they have to show they know more or better about wine, which is a bit annoying if you ask me. I think there’s room for everyone’s opinions, everyone’s individual tastes. It’s just wine, after all. I wish people in the biz would just drop the gloves, pick up the glasses and have a goddamn party.

Jimmy S: What’s Georgie’s Pies? Was it a store or a brand? I either got pies from the Renwick bakery or from the gas station late at night after the bars had kicked us out.

cgf: Trust me, Richard Betts is a *much* cooler guy than I am. He’s like a rock star, but more importantly, makes everyone else he’s hanging out with feel like a rock star at the same time. You well never eat better, drink better or laugh harder than when you hang out with Richard. He’s a fan of the Thunder Show as well!

Todd Smith: Yup, they’ve been on a roll. 2005 and 2006 were pretty awesome. I tried the 2007 really quickly, in a lineup of about 40 other SBs, so I don’t think I got a fair assessment. But I think 2007 will probably be a pretty good year, too. There was some frost a couple months ago, so 2008 is a big question mark right now (but no reason to fret yet since it’s still the middle of the summer there).

I realize, I never answered my own QOTD: Chicken Tikka Masala!

Come on Eric A. Root canals only as bad the guy or gals who do them poorly. I can give you the name of a guy who is fantastic and will leave you wanting more than one when you visit his office.

QOTD: Pretty much anything cause I love pie crust. It’s my favorite part of every pie I’ve ever eaten. I think it’s all that butter.

I also love cheese, so something involving that would be fantastic.

Fun show. I went and ordered the book immediately from Amazon, looking forward to reading it. Wonder if Eric will get a bump in sales thanks to WLTV?
