Can box wine be good? That is a question that maybe taking a very interesting spin in a new direction, as more and more under 25 year old wine drinkers enter the wine market wineries are thinking of new ways to brand to that demo and today Gary Vaynerchuk tastes some of the newer efforts in the market.

Wines tasted in this episode:

2006 Bandit Pinot Grigio
2006 Bota Box Chadonnay

2004 Cuvee de Pena
2005 Thirsty Lizard Shiraz

I'm open to wines in a box, although I feel dubious about them and have never bought one and don't have any plans to. I'm definitely not into wines in a can however, I know Coppola's even doing one of those. I tasted a cuvee de pena rose in a bottle, it wasn't awful for the $2 or 3.99 it cost wholesale.

I had an unbelievable ribeye at BLT Prime in New York a few months ago. I think the atmosphere of the place added to it. They served it with bone marrow which put it squarely over the top.

The Box wine idea was exciting… too bad they didn’t turn out better. I always get trashed at family get togethers because I talk down the Franzia they everyone loves… totally glorified grape juice. Not bad… just like Welch’s, but in a box…

QOTD: Best steak was a Delmonico Steak at Ocean Point Inn in East Boothbay, Maine… The worst.. easily any steak I make myself… I just feel sorry for the cow… like Beef Jerky, only not good…

    Best- Ruth Chris steakhouse ribeye

Worst – my grandmother cooks Omaha steaks on the original Foreman grill. Any one of those blackened jerky cuts would fit.

The best steak I ever had was at Grill 23 in Boston. It was a filet and we had it with a Hamilton Rusell pinot noir. The worst was at Ponderosa Steakhouse in Puerto Rico. I was there on business and was forced to go with a client. Wow was it chewy!!

best steak… Jeff Ruby’s in Cincinnati

worst steak… I’ve made some pretty aweful steaks, but there was also a restaurant in St. Louis where I had a hanger steak that was overcooked with some burnt sauce… horrible. Fortunately for them, I don’t remember the name of the place.

Interesting show on the box wines. I’ve heard the Killer Juice cab isn’t all that bad.

Understand that the future might be boxes or new technology/enviromentally friendly packaging, but I am having trouble embracing it quite yet…..

QOTD – Mortons’s Westchester, IL – Mrs. Hopper and I brought a bottle of 01 Phelps Insignia that had been decanted for two hours and re-bottled. Couple Martini’s to start so our wine could rest and breath after the long journey in the car..:) Had Porthouse steaks wih bernaise, Tomato/Onion/Blue Cheese Salad, Mushrooms, Aspargus, Galric mashed and a chocalate souffle for dessert. I have many great steaks throughout my life at most fo the most famous places. What made it most special was being with the love of my life……(The Insignia wasn’t to shabby either!!!!)

Worst steak – Ponderosa flat steak – cheap steak joint that I am not even sure if they are still around. Used to be one in my home town of Eau Claire, WI

Sensei – Thank you for delaying the drawing entry for a few days so I could watch a couple days later and still be involve!

You are going to pull my name out of the bucket on Friday like picking up a Grasshooper by it’s legs on a hot summer day. Which I know you did as a kid. Just do not eat it!!!!!…:)

Best steak: Dry aged delmonico from Capital Grille in Atlanta. Equalled by the fries drizzled with truffle oil.

Worst: I ordered a noodle dish with “steak” from a small Vietnamese joint in Toronto. The waiter told me “white people don’t like this.” Well, then I wanted it even more. I wanted authentic Vietnamese, thank you very much. Turns out he was right. Yikes! Love those rice noodles, though.

  • QOTD: I’d have to say the best was in Paris, in a restaurant I don’t know the name of. IT was a Filet Mignon, wrapped in bacon. The worst – in recent memory it was one I had at Grub Steak in Utah, up in Park City. Just really fatty, and not cooked particularly well.

good episode. Or at least, interesting. I still laugh at you birthday episode (maybe from last year?) when you tried all the white zinfandels…

    Gary:

I just ordered the Christmas package by phone. I live in Huntsville, Alabama. State regulations specify wine has to be shipped to the local Alabama Alcoholic Beverage (ABC) Control store rather than to my home address. It also requires a form that must I fill out. A copy must accompany the shipped package. Your employee in the Order Department, Mr. Chris Popp, was very courteous, understanding, and efficient in taking the order and complying with these regulations. Congratulations on having such good employees!

best: an over cooked somekindacut my mom grilled on the back patio of a beach house in pacific city oregon the flavor was ok but for some reason the sub par steak complemented the relaxed atmosphere of the whole trip…

worst: Grandmas christmas dinner at an all you can eat buffet…

  • Best steak was in high school a Beef Wellington at a The Lamplighter in Charlotte, NC. It may not have really been the best I’ve every had but my memory of it has kept me searching to repeat it. Before that day I’d only had steak at Quincy’s steakhouse(one of those 1970s cafeteria style steakhouses) and as you can imagine…not the same experience at all. It was a life changing experience to learn that there are gradations in everything and excellence, though expensive and hard to achieve, is worth the effort
worst steak: tried grass fed buffalo tenderloin and while it may indeed have been from the loin, it was in no way tender. I actually had to resort to Worchestershire sauce to get it down. buffalo is fine for ground beef and makes a great burger but don’t get a steak!

  • Mrs. Grasshopper

    Hi Gary,

The name says it all…..but I am no longer a lurker, for this is my first comment. As you know my hubby Grasshopper is one of your biggest fans!

QOTD…The best steak that I’ve ever had was at L’Bofinger in Paris last October. The meal started off with Truffle Pate. Then I had a Filet Mignon with a Bernaise sauce, French Green Beans and Crispy French Fries with a beautiful bottle of 1994 Cos D’ Estournel. It was the most beautiful romantic evening with my husband, Hopper.

The worst steak I’ve ever had was a leathery overdone Sirloin Steak at Ponderosa Steakhouse in Macomb, Illinois. The choices were slim being a small college town where my daughter attends grad school. Grasshopper was not with me and I knew nothing about his experience at the Ponderosa in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Grasshopper is becoming quite the expert at grilling steaks at home and we have been enjoying a lot of his homecooked steaks. We have a beautiful array of wines to accomany them too…but none that would compliment as perfectly as the 1986 Chateau Lafleur.

It was great meeting you in Chicago earlier this year and look foward to drinking more “God damned wine” with you, sometime soon!

there really hasn’t ever been a boxed wine I’ve been able to tolerate. My wife used to drive the Franzia Rose’ but not anymore. I just don’t see how the plastic liners in those containers can help a wine age well although the box concept DOES limit the amount of light which hits the wine. Not really worth it in my mind. Besides, what would the wine cellar look like with a bunch of these boxes sitting around – unpleasant.

    QOTD:
BEST: There’s a restaurant about 20 miles from me (been there twice, don’t remember the name – pathetic) which runs two very large red brick grills and you cook your own steak. They have several cuts to choose from, you season the meat with whatever you want from a slew of spices they supply and you let it cook to your satisfaction. You can also make your garlic (or whatever) Texas toast on the grill at the sme time. VERY radool!!

    WORST: Denny’s (just unreal…)

QOTD – BEST – Bryant & Cooper Steakhouse, Roslyn (i know you’ve been there)…The leather seats, Cirgar Friendly (at the time, i went) the wine list…back when I had money…I mean Stupid Money! ahh! The good ‘ol Days!

Worst – Emeril’s Tchoup Chop, Orlando – Some Asian style NY Strip was AWFUL. Which was a suprise cause this was a faily new establishment when we went….Anyway! I have eaten in E’s places before and was quite pleased. I don’t know, these FoodTV guys get too big too fast and sometimes QUALITY goes out the door!

    Enjoy!

Box wine! You are hilarious. However, it actually makes sense for me to buy a decent box white to make my kir cocktails.

QOTD: The best steak ever has be the waygu rib-eye at Canlis here in Seattle. It’s like butter. No, no, it’s better than butter! The worst steak was on a college athletic trip in Tennessee at some random restaurant. All I remember is the menu had pictures of the menu items. That really should have been a sign.
