I'm open to wines in a box, although I feel dubious about them and have never bought one and don't have any plans to. I'm definitely not into wines in a can however, I know Coppola's even doing one of those. I tasted a cuvee de pena rose in a bottle, it wasn't awful for the $2 or 3.99 it cost wholesale.

We got turned on to box wine via our local Catholic church. They imported a red table wine in a 5L box from Cantina di Monteforte. Our house wine for a good time. http://www.cantinadimonteforte.it/

QOTD: Best steak: Gotta be a NY I cut and cooked myself at a college kitchen job. Or maybe an entrecote frites somewhere when living in France. Lot to be said for tartare.

Worst: sorry to say steaks get pretty raw treatement in Chinese restaurants. Had some pretty awful steak strips at wedding banquets and similar gatherings.

I always see Franzia in my step-mom’s fridge, so maybe I should introduce her to some Bandit.

QOTD: Best steak would have to be this filet mignon at a small steakhouse where I live called Hickory Hills. The steaks are really tender and juicy.

Worst steak would have to be a ‘steak’ I had while in Honduras. My whole family was on vacation there to see where they used to live (my grandpa worked for a fruit company repairing helicopters and got moved down there when my dad was young). At this hotel we were at I ordered a steak, although I’m not sure it was beef. It had an intriguingly good flavor until you began to chew, then it was chewy and stringy. Not to mention it was pounded like no other, probably 1/8th” thick.

  • I had the Cuvee de Pena when it first came out and thought it was a pretty decent wine. Tasted it one year later and thought it was one of the worst wines I had ever tasted. I definately think that the packaging affected the taste after awhile.

QOTD: Best Steak – Ribeye on the grill this summer; worst steak – completely overcooked steak at a friend’s cookout this summer.

  • Great show, thanks for the input on boxed wine. Enjoyed the show!
QOTD: Best steak is hands down the Rib Eye. Worst steak (if there is one) would have to be a chuck steak….not the best cut of meat.

The worst steak I had was at Peter Lugas in Brooklyn. And the best steak is at Strip House on 12 street in Manhattan followed closely by Sparks in midtown.

    Nice show.

Best steak – American Kobe strib rare off the home BBQ grill. Not the most tender but the best flavor.

Worst – Omaha steaks filet mignon given to us as a gift several years ago. No flavor and a streak of gristle running through them.

Best Steak: Kobe/Wagyu steak at a place in chicago called Yoshi’s Cafe, rare, just unbelievable. I’d never had Kobe and compared to how it’s abused in meals all over the fancy restaurants this was just fantastic! Nothing too special done with it just letting the meat shine.

Worst Steak: An overcooked steak (I sent it back and the second one was cooked even FURTHER) from a fantastic steakhouse which I won’t shame. I don’t know how they screwed up Rare twice. It was upsetting.

Very interesting episode. You know the first thing I thought was that maybe they needed some time out of the box to air out, just as we do with bottled wine. Just a thought. Steak, now that’s a favorite subject of mine. The best i’ve ever had is a porterhouse at a great restaurant called pompeii in Philadelphia. The bottle of Monsanto 1997 Chianti Reserva is what made me fall in love with wine. The worst would have to be the one I had the last time we went to Sam Seltzer’s, it used to be one of our family get together spots but it’s just gone to hell. As far as chain places go, Longhorn has killer steaks. Anyone have an idea of why wines are tasting astringent to me lately?

  • Best Steak: Honeymoon, Ahwanhnee Hotel in Yosemite, they have this amazing table at the end of the dining room that looks out on Yosemite Falls, there also happened to be the most beautiful person in my life sitting on the other side of the table, and i had the best Filet Mignon ever, (was not 21 yet, did not get to have wine). Worst Steak: let me count the ways, more steak is bad then good, unfortunately, I had a Filet Tip a few weeks ago that was terrible, it had the old blood flavor infused in the meat, that nothing could take away, even a great bottle of Barbera. Mind you I love my steaks a little bit mooing normally, but this was not rare, and thank god, we probably would have got sick. (This was at someone’s house, we had to eat, at least I brought the wine).
Great Episode: I would probably pick up a box wine to try, especially at the price points mentioned. I would probably be disappointed, and wished I hadn’t but, at least i am trying stuff right.

Great show, I have always been curious about boxed wines but been to shy to actual buy one. I guess I should just do like you say and pick one up for the hell of it, but after that thoose rave reviews I am still pretty weary. Best steak I’ve had was a New York cut at Ruth Chris in SF. They have quite a selection and I have been meaning to go back…Maybe If I go in and sport an $800 bottle of wine I’ll have an excuse to go agian. Worst Steak: I remember a summer evening when I was proabably 10 or so and my mom made Stroganoff for dinner…it is usally my favorite dish….It has noodles, cream of mushroom soup, sour cream and usally a nice tender meat…For what ever reason the meat was overcooked and super tough…I had to chew and chew and chew it…My mom would not let me be excused from the table until I finished the my plate. I remember sitting at the table for about 30 or 40 min complaining about that horiable meat…I chewed it all up and spit it in my napkin…I then tossed it out the kitchen window when she was not looking…I remember telling her the story yrs later and we both got a good chuckle…Cheers…..Happy Holidays…. Adrian

GV, thanks for the ep. Glad to see that there are occastionally some decent wines that come from a box and might be worth a try.

QOTD: Best and worst steak, hrm…

Best: Filet from Bern’s Steakhouse, Tampa FL (which coincidentally, has one of the largest wine cellars in the US, or so they say. This restaurant is incredible!)
Worst: The Golden Corral, that was a mistake I will not repeat.

    Thanks as always!
