I'm open to wines in a box, although I feel dubious about them and have never bought one and don't have any plans to. I'm definitely not into wines in a can however, I know Coppola's even doing one of those. I tasted a cuvee de pena rose in a bottle, it wasn't awful for the $2 or 3.99 it cost wholesale.

    Best Steak:

A huge ribeye, BBQ’d at our campsite after dusk in the Australian bush, not far from Ularu. Large red “Roos,” and I mean large, attracted by the raging fire and the smell of food, moved very quietly into the flickering shadows behind us that had been thrown off by the flames. Sensing movement, we turned around only to see the orange and red flames reflected in their open eyes and fur. Eery.

But the beef, well, we tore it apart with our hands and ate like medieval kings…

    Worst Steak:

In an English pub in London back in 1979. It was after midnight when we rolled in and we were starving. But try though we did we just couldn’t eat those godawful steaks…not even if that meant causing an international incident…which it pretty nearly did. The steaks were so bad that we finally had to ask the waiter what it was…he looked at us in disbelief and asked: “What do you boys think it is?” Which was a very bad move….

We once cooked a whole beef tenderloin (which we had gone to one of those free-range, grass-fed, cows-happy-to-be-slaughtered, ranches to pick up) in a salt, thyme and flour crust. After baking, we removed the crust and enjoyed the most tender and flavorful steak I’ve ever had.

There have been so many bad steaks over the years that its hard to point to a single incident. Once I discovered that there is a relationship between price and quality, there have been far fewer horrible steaks. Of course one has to eat far fewer steaks to afford the very good ones.

QOTD: The best steak was at a steak house called Vic and Anthony’s in downtown Houston. It was a great meal with colleagues and the food was exceptional. The worst steak was at a local steak house after they did renovations – they lost the feeling the restaurant had and change their cooking methods.

INteresting show. I have never had a box wine. Nice to know they dont all live up to the reputation of being bad.

Best steak: I think it would have to be a filet I had cooked up for me and my wife about 13 years ago. I had marinated it in orange juice and some other things. And it just turned out to be the best steak I have ever had. I havent had one better cooking myself or at a restarant since!! 🙂 I have had close to that good, but nothing toping it. The planets must have been in line or something on that night.

Worst steak: This is a harder question. Hard to remember having a really bad steak!! Maybe it would be the way WAY over cooked rib eye I had on vacation in FL once. I cant even remember the name of the place. But the seafood was great.

  • Best steak: A filet mignon from the Costco in Maui. It was prepared by my friend who is a chef at Domaine Chandon.
Worst steak: Chicken fried steak, with extra patty, from Coco’s in San Diego. It actually wasn’t that bad at 2am, but the next morning i was cursing it.

Finally, I’ve been asking for this episode. I’m tired of wasting money on people who pour my good wine into their empty beer glass just to drink some more! 🙂

Best Steak:Porterhouse steak w/ crumbled gorgonzola at Cosimo’s on Union in Newburgh NY
Worst Steak: Over Cooked strip steak at a local steak house.

    WE LOVE BEEF!

The best steak that I ever had was one that I made a couple of years ago for a dinner. If I remember correctly, it was a four pound slab of porterhouse, I rubbed it down and let it sit for 2 hours with a paste of salt, pepper, stone-ground dijon mustard, and worcestershire sauce. Then I put it on huge cast iron skillet and seared both sides of the meat slab and then I threw the steak and skillet in the oven to finish cooking it. About an hour later, I had the most flavorful and tender steak I’d ever had in my life. That along with an English Pale Ale, and I was in heaven!

The worst steak of my life was at a place here in San Antonio called the Crystal Steakhouse (no longer in business, thank God). My girlfriend’s father at the time had won a $600 gift card to this place at his company’s Christmas party. He took us all out for steaks and they were absolutely disgusting! My girlfriend’s sister actually found a hair in her steak. The waitstaff was just as bad as the food. Why were the steaks so bad? They were cold, not cooked properly (raw in the center, almost burnt on the outside), tough, and had a nasty after taste. I’d so don’t ever eat there, but luckily the place is no longer in business.

Gary V, great idea for a show with the boxed wines. Wish those reds would have panned out better, but oh well. J…E…T…S…jets, jets, jets! Been a rough year Gar, but maybe we can salvage it by bustin’ pretty boy Brady upside his head! Hate the Pat’s with much passion. Anyway, onto best and worst steak..good question. For best gonna have to go with the amazingly delicious 93+ pt effort from the River Palm in Edgewater NJ. Was a Tbone around 32 oz, served sliced on the bone, that came out sizzling, cooked MR to perfection, with juices oozing from all pores..yum! The worst steak…hmmm..has to be the hockey puck I had at Sizzler, circa 1993, in my hometown of Yonkiz. Left my mouth begging for a sip of some Australian fruit bomb to wash away the taste! Only woulda been worse if I actually had to pay for it( my buddy worked there and hooked us up all the time with free crappy food). Anyhoo, you rock, show rocks and down with Belichick!!

Best Steak: Filet, I grilled. Thick cut medium rare with a wine reduction. Had it with a good bottle of cab. Good night.

Worst Steak: Restaurant in Louisiana, they took a nice filet and overloaded it with Worcestershire sauce. Very heartbreaking.

Also, order the Christmas Pack and some other wine. Some of the wines weren’t available anymore, but your customer service department was great. Thanks.

  • Best steak – years ago – charbroiled with love outdoors.

Worst steak – day after Thanksgiving this year – Manhattan steakhouse – leather.

The worst steak I have had, is at Jimmy’s Charhouse. I feel bad saying that because in the N.W Suburbs of chicago, they do a great job. I use to work at Pete Millers in Wheeling IL, the Bone in Ribeye was my Favorite for straight up steaks. The Ribeye trio was fantastic!!! 3 3oz Ribeye’s that had a parmessan crust, a horsradish crust, and a bleu cheese crust. Bone in Ribeyes are the best. But those crusts I mentioned ROCK!@!!!!!

    Great EP!

QOTD: Best ever – 1996, valentine’s day, had a gallagher’s reservation, they refused to seat us! Called Ruth’s Chris from the foyer of Gallagher’s got a reservation for a half hour later. The best filet ever with a bottle of Chateau Simard 1983.

QOTD: Worst – Outback Steakhouse Ribeye. MArbled is one thing, this was a whole different ball o’ fat.

QOTD: best, could’ve been almost any of the steaks I ate when I lived in Argentina about 20 years ago. Besides Malbecs and Torrontes, Argentines know best how to raise tasty beef!! Worst… sorry, I just can’t remember a bad one (though I’m sure I’ve had them.)

  • Best steak: About two weeks ago at Chef Meili’s Austrian restaraunt in Seoul, Korea.

Worst: About three years ago when I was in grad school and my roommate and I put some steaks on the grill in the back yard then got distracted and forgot about them. ugh… the dog wouldn’t even eat them.

Best steak – 1 1/2 inch thick ribeye salted both sides for 30 minutes then grilled 5 minutes per side-at home with a cabernet looking at the stars on my back deck.

Great show — looks like the box wines did not live up to the hype.

QOTD — best: Capitol Grill in DC filet cooked medium rare (sent fist attempt back; second try was unbelievable!!!)

worst: Outback Filet — I don’t even know if it was beef definitely not a filet.

  • Best Steak – Bobby Flay’s, Borgata/Atlantic City, Philadelphia Style Strip

Worst – The Porterhouse that sat under the flame flair up on my grill 🙁

Great topic! I might have to actually slow down past the box wine section this weekend.

Best and worst steak you say. This is gonna be a weird response but I am going to have to say Logan’s Steakhouse for both.

The first time I ate there the steak I had was a disgusting abomination. It must have came from roadkill. It wasn’t cooked the way I ordered, fatty as the first kid knocked out in a dodge ball game and just all around unappetizing.

My friend took me there again this past week (against my wishes I might add) and I ordered the fillet. Holy faith being restored in this place. It was one of the most melt in your mouth steaks I ever ate. I could have eaten 5 of then. If you do check it out go with the roasted veggie skewers. Trust me you won’t be disappointed.

  • Hope it’s not too late to get in on the contest. I usually watch every day, but I got behind a few days following the birth of my daughter on the 10th!

QOTD: Best steak was filet made on the grill and shared with our neighbors. Worst steak was probably some tough, overcooked piece of beef served to me with A-1 sauce when I was a kid.
