A local grocer had it for $7 too, so you can’t beat that. I’ll be at a wedding though so I’ll drink whatever they’re pouring.

  • Wine Not?

    Wow, I’m heading to NYC in February and the prices for wines by the glass are already making me cringe. I always forget that about NY…

    QOTD: ANY wine on New Year’s??? Either a vintage Krug or, if not bubbly, one of those amazing Napa cult cabs that no one can afford to get their hands on (Screaming Eagle or the like).

    Level the table! It’s bouncing all over the place like a kool-aid stand!

    Peace Lurkers!

  • Dude, that was a solid episode.

    QOTD – I’d love to expose my friends to something a little bit different for New Years… I was thinking maybe a sparkling red.

    Great road-show episode…I think on New Yrs Eve I’d love to get my hands on a classic first growth Medoc Bordeaux (Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour (Pauillac), etc..). Unfortunately my finances allow me 5th growth for now 🙂
    Cheers

    Gary,
    Very interested in your objective for this show. sounds like Bill chose 4 wines for you to evaluate….selling $25 wines by the glass with less than 90 pt ratings is brutal……I would have loved to hear how Bill would have rated the wines. It is true as you said in the show that each of us have our own opinions. As you move a long this week, it would be great to have your guest rate first, then let you rate.
    QOTD: Start off the evening with a Prosecco and apps then move to a Brunello…..and finish with a tawny port and Stilton blue with red grapes.

    QOTD:

    A. Whatever I’m drinking, I think it will be less than $24 a glass.
    B. I’ll be drinking a bottle of the new New Year’s Eve Wine Library surprise pack that Gary V will announce after Christmas for a “taste along with Gary” episode;
    C. I’ll be drinking water as my wine budget was maxed out in October;
    D. I’ll be drinking Scotch Old Fashioned with Bobby Short and Ike Turner;
    E. I’ll be drinking coffee with hints of leather, smoke, green asparagus and cherry notes.
    F. All of the above.

    I think our friend William has a wine crush on GV.
    Really digging the on location shows, but William didn’t give us the “in the camera waterfall spit” like Andre. From now on the guest should be forced to give us a good camel spit.

    The Vayniacs have to understand that the prices per glass there are what they are because it’s the Carlyle, arguably the most elegant and hotel in NYC (perhaps the US). You’re paying for the name, the ambiance and, more importantly, the real estate… Manhattan (and I guess the Upper East Side, as GV pointed out) is a unique place and can’t be compared with anywhere else in this country.

    QOTD: This year… hopefully an old Barolo (71? 85?). I’ll be staying with some friends in Italy and I just found out the house has a 6,000 bottle cellar. I’m sure I’ll find something good in there.

  • Great idea for a quick series of episodesâ??so much to learn on so many different levels. The idea behind finding those hidden gems amongst lesser vintages is great, but it seems like you’d have to have some serious chops (and some serious tasting-time) to pull something like that off. Does that make sense? Should the rest of us wine mortals stick to more reliable (for lack of a better word) vintages?

    QOTD: No ideaâ??I’ll be in London; no solid plans yet. Maybe I’ll just watch the fireworks from the hotel balcony and drink that shiz straight from the bottle, Ep 148-style.

    qotd: i’d like to drink a really nice burgundy, or maybe something from the northern rhone. something that’ll really knock my socks off.

    Again with the restaurant wines! Your giving all the secrets G-Man.

    QOTD: Delectus 2000 Beckstoffer maybe, if not some Biale. And maybe a Baumard that seems good.

    I LOVE the different environments! (no phones ringing) Am anxious to see the rest of the week’s episodes. I love GV’s comfort level with these guys. “William” got his chops busted and he liked it!

    QOTD-
    Ripple with a 2 buck chuck chaser. WTH – I’ll be lit! I’m a realist!!! First glass is all that counts.
    C’mon, New Years eve is a night to let loose and NOT debate the best wine in the cellar!

    Christmas dinner would be a better wine/food focus. A good Barlolo, a grilled, 2″ thick NY Strip steak and sauted shitake mushrooms, asparagus and twice baked potatoes with grated cheese. An ice wine or Port and Snickers brownies for dessert.

    A ride home.

  • Enjoying the restaurant episodes, feeling bad for the soms so far. 2004 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau. Probably a ’94 vintage port as well.

    I would drink Michael Manz sparkling wine from Washington (represent), or maybe a Prosecco, like Jeio, with a splash a of a kumquat-clementine cordial I read a recipe for on the New York Times web site today.

    I will be having Schramsberg Brut Rose for New Years Eve. Great episode!

  • Shad

    Well, since I have to work New Year’s Eve because the bad guys don’t take a day off (and it’s my son’s 4th birthday!!!!!), I will have to wait for New Year’s Day and I would like to try Dominus or really splurge for the Taittenger Rose, which my wife would love (and reviewed here on the thunder show).

  • cpd

    Did I actually hear you say “big load…(of something)…exploding in my mouth”? That’ll be one for the highlight reel… Love the restaurant tour!

    QOTD: An ’86 Dominus and an ’02 Robert Young Scion.

    QOTD: Castell Roig… I roll small on NY Eve. But NY Day, we bring it on with tons of food, drink, AND FAMILY – It’s Thanksgiving all over again ;-).

  • Less Than The Carlyle: Trademark it soon. The name alone is bound to snag several of the label shoppers out there.

    Ici/La-Bas: I’m almost positive I’ve had it before, but I may be confusing it with something else. Now I’ll have to hunt down a bottle to see if it’s the one I remember. *note to self*

    QOTD: If I can find more bottles of Gloria de Ostatu 2001 Rioja Alavesa (without too high of a markup) in time for NYE, I’ll be ecstatic. It’s the kind of wine I’d love to share with friends. I’ve certainly raved enough to everyone about it.

    It would also be nice to have champagne, of course. My champagne knowledge is limited, so I’m still tasting my way through glasses & bottles to learn what I like and don’t like in bubbly. Eh, so far I’ve learned that my palate rejects bone dry champagne.

    My bottle of 1994 Dow’s Port is too young to open. (Heh, 2 minutes ago I looked up that WLTV episode to show a friend.) Meanwhile, I’ve been drinking Churchill’s 10 Year Old Tawny Port every so often. I wouldn’t mind sharing a bottle of that with friends on NYE.

    QOTD:

    I would actually like to have some sake, Nanbu Bijin Sake Ancient Pillars, the one Gary introduced us to.

    Seriously good thick daiginjou sake here in Japan – New Year is the festival that’s celebrated over here and there’s even a special sake everyone has for breakfast!

  • dave from Osaka (thunderball)

    At the beginning of the show I was like, oh-oh this Bill guy is way too straight-laced to make it through 20 minutes of Gary….but he was cool in an understated kind of way and just rolled with it. Good show. As for what I would drink on New Years I guess the sky’s the limit…hmmmm…maybe an old Sassacaia? But realistically it’s probably be a 2003 Marciliano or Oreno. Or perhaps some 2004 Kanonkop Pinotgage…I’ll have to go see what I got left.
