Continuing with the NYC wine tour Gary Vaynerchuk stops by the Cafe Carlylse and tastes some wines with William Rhodes.

A local grocer had it for $7 too, so you can’t beat that. I’ll be at a wedding though so I’ll drink whatever they’re pouring.

  • QOTD: thank the man, as I haven’t thought about it yet, and it’s a comin’. I think I’m going for red, as we’re not doing a large group thing, and I don’t want to down a bottle of bubbly myself. Red, likely a solid Chateauneuf du Pape, or a nice Bordeaux. We’ll see.

    And just for the record again, I’m a hater of the markup on wine in restaurants. And hate is a strong word.

    Another lovely som’. I thought Bill was particularly laconic and couldn’t help but wonder what his style was on a day off. Hoodies and shell toes is my guess. QOTD – Waitrose Blanc de Blancs.

    Bill was a bit of a dud, but his question was a good one. ANY wine on New Year’s Eve? I will likely pull out two; one a big Cab- maybe a 2001 Plumbjack or a 2001 Quintessa and the other Turley Zin or a yummy Syrah like a Mollydooker Carnival of Love…

    I think you and William were a great on-screen duo. A great contrast in personalities, you guys need your own show, very “odd couple-ish”.

    Also, maybe next time you could find a table that wobbles more? Maybe do a show on the back of a flat-bed truck? That was distracting to me.

    I agree with everyone else about prices, and is the main reason why I rarely order wine in a restaurant. Do you realize that the per-glass price for all of the three purchase-able wines were more than an entire bottle? However, I do realize that the prices may be inflated due to the location.

    QOTD: A nice champagne of some sort. I am not big on champagne, so I would have no clue how to pick one. Maybe you can do a New Years show to give us “champagne challenged” individuals some ideas.

    Before I retired, I traveled extensively on the companyâ??s dime. Every time I visited NYC I was told that I could always find better than the NYC offering, but would never pay more than the NYC price.

    Another great show! Shooting 2 for 2 on the fun sommelier department. Also, this resteraunt was lessy noisy which is good.

    Just came back from a Top Champagne tasting…and the winner was…..Paul Roger Winston Churchill 1998 followed by a Rose Deutz 1996….any of these would be fine for new year’s eve, or any other day….

    Really interesting episode GV. I have to say, if the Carlyle is such a fancy-smachy restaurant, why was the table jiggling? Though if I went to NYC with someone rolling in the dough, I’d have to try and get in, esp on Wednesday nights! I have to say, we sell only a few $8.75 a glasses of wines at work and that’s a kinda big deal. Ouch, $25 a glass would really hurt the wallet! Ok and I feel that William would have been much more at ease if he wasn’t at his place of work, where he needs to be the serious sommelier!

    By the way William (if you’re actually reading the comment boards), pretty good pronunciation of those French words. This is coming from one of the Vayniacs who’s a resident francophile (getting a Masters in French and doing a thesis on wine), and almost a fluent francophone!

Either I’ll be hoping to drink something passable at a bar or I’ll be having some sparkling wine be it Champagne, Cava, or Prosecco (notice I didn’t call it Champagne, cause that comes from a specific region in France- I’m all about the AOCs!). But I’d have to say, I’m interested in having some of that 1990 Aigle Vouvray…or perhaps it’ll be a wine from WL! At this point, who knows!

  • QOTD: I wish I knew what the wine was – some white from Alsace with really delicate fruit and floral notes that slides over my palate like liquid silk, gives me a mouthful of complex and subtle melon, peach and rose petals, then balances out to a great finish with a little nutty minerality before it fades away like a setting sun. Chaser is a 90 Cristal Brut from the bottle with a lampshade on my head and a WTF? tshirt. Or maybe GV’s dodgeball shirt.

    How can people live with themselves after charging $25.00 a glass from a $30.00 bottle of wine? It’s not even that bad in Santa Fe.
    By the way we had a bottle of 2005 Amisfield pinot noir last night and it was great.

    We may open a bottle of port though, as sales of it is now PROHIBITED along with all fortified wines in our city (Albuquerque, NM)by our mayor for unknown reasons. All liquor merchants have pulled all fortified wines from the shelves. I’d be very surprised if any DUI’s had an opened bottle of 20 year old Taylor Fladgate or Harvey’s Bristol Cream Sherry in their vehicles, but I guess you can’t be too careful.

  • Hey Gary. I’ve been watching your show now for a week or two and this is the first time I’ve posted so I guess I’m no longer a lurker. I’m pretty new to wine and just wanted to thank my friend Chad for recommending your show and really getting me into wine. I tried a wine earlier in the week and it was the first wine I really got “excited” about (Coppola Diamond Label Claret Cab. Sauv. 2005), so I’m hooked. Thanks Gary.
