  • This episode rocks. And I’m not even a football fan. Great job DK!

QOTD: I lease a Chicago apartment, so I don’t have a personal wine cellar. I don’t want to buy a case of anything until I have someplace stable to cellar it. (Well, unless I plan to drink every bottle within a year.) When that happens, I’ll buy a case of—yes I’m gonna mention it again—2001 Gloria de Ostatu.

Future WLTV guest-hosts: Fabulous! DK will be a hard act to follow, but I look forward to the next guest.

Pomerol: That stuff is my bank account’s kryptonite. I’ve tried to lay off the Pomerol (and Saint Emilion) for most of the year—you know, trying more new things than drinking the things I know—but it’s hard to stay out of the Bordeaux aisles in wine shops. And see, now you’ve given me an excuse to try some ’05 Pomerols in the $40-60 price range. Like I really needed another excuse. My bank account says, “Gee, thanks Gary. Thanks a lot. Feh.”

Sleeping pills in ice cream: Funniest story I’ve heard in the last 24 hours. Even funnier than the Sasha bread addiction story. My father is also a hardcore bread addict. Your father and mine must’ve been separated at birth.

Great effort DK! You really brought the thunder. Hard to believe we are still trying to repeal prohibition laws.

QOTD: Never have and never intend to buy a case or more of one wine even though I have bought 100 hundreds of wines.

Qotd – Showket Sangiovese 1998 at 15 bones. Best US sangio I have come across. Bought a case after sampling a bottle. I am like you though DK, I seldom buy more than three of anything. In fact, of my 300+ bottles I have 180 different wines.

Gary I love the guest idea! You are great with people and it is going to be interesting to see how different palates compare to yours.

I don’t often buy cases, but here are my few case purchases:

I actually went to France for this:
1996 Château de la Grille Chinon (6 pack)
1999 Château de la Grille Chinon (6 pack)

    and purchased locally:
2004 Château Moncontour Vouvray Brut Château Moncontour (12 pack)

QOTD: A whole case? Never done that- always a mixed half-case at a time. BUT, if I had to, I guess I’d go with Berco DO Infante 2005 – even I can live with buying a $60 case of a rediculously value-driven wine!

  • Very well done, DK! Very good picks too, made up for a very interesting episode. Very good QOTD too. And here’s my answer: 2004 Charles Underwood Farleigh Zinfandel. Bought a case from WL, and now I’m down to the last three bottles. Trying to keep them there for a while

Awesome show. QOTD: when I first started getting into wine a few years ago I picked up a case of the 2003 Domaine Grand Veneur Les Champauvins CdR (91 WA, $13). I tend to buy a lot of 6-packs now to drink 2-3 right away and store the rest for a few years to see how they age.

  • Ohio Bruce

DK, you are my Daddy! Wow, great job. You’ve scared off all of the mere mortals for sure. We have a similar ridiculous law in Ohio imposed by the distributor lobby that now prevents us from “importing” wine from out of state wineries in order to “protect” jobs of Ohio winemakers…

QOTD: Valley of the Moon, Cuvee de la Luna 2002 (2001 was even better!)

Gary and DK….fantastic episode. I must say that even my kids were pumped to watch this episode. Unfortunately, I live in one of the backwards states that still has shipping laws. Michigan allows for wines to be shipped intrastate, but not interstate. What a croc. It is too bad I do not have access to many of the wines WLTV has and GV reviews. I keep hope that someday it will change.

QOTD: I have never bought a case, I usually only by a single bottle to taste and then go back to buy a few more to drink or store if I liked it.

  • Wonderful show … nice to have a fun guest!
QOTD: I liked the Victoria de Longaz so much that it is the ONLY wine I have ever bought a full case of.

QOTD…. have never bought a full case of one wine as there are still too many new wines to taste.

PS No drawing because no one cut up all the little pieces of paper for gary to pick from.

QOTD: Probably 2005 Bordeaux, still planning on placing an order. Other than that, never more than 6, and usually no more than 3 of any one thing. I’ve been working hard for less than 2 years to train my palate. I’ve been drinking wine for 12 years but only really paying attention and wanting to learn for less than 2.

Good episode Gary and DK, but boy you were getting me nervous at the end. Alas, your point about the absurdity of interstate wine shipping laws is taken. I’m in Minnesota and used to ship my WL orders into Wisconsin and pick them up there but now have lost even that option because Wisconsin now got dropped from the list.

Make no mistake about it…any politician supporting these restrictions that says “It’s about protecting minors”, or “Protecting local farmers/wineries” is delivering a line of bull. It’s really about protecting a “walled garden” of distributorships and the wholesaling industry, which is super-powerful and super-corrupt.

Having said that, I’m concerned, as Gary is, to keep WLTV free of politics, especially with the US election year coming. There is an organization that could really use a boost from the Vayner Nation though, that seeks to help break down all these artificial barriers on interstate shipping.
