Wonderful episode! Many thanks to Jeffery Davies, and so many kudos to GV for having him on the show. QOTD: A big YES for decanting! And the decanter does NOT have to cost $100.00, but just have a sufficiently wide base. Yes, yes, yes!

Outrageous episode. I have enjoyed a bunch of wines that were Jeff Davis selections. I do not decant because I drink burgundies and I prefer seeing the wine evolve over time in the bottle and glass. JMHO

Loved this episode. I’m putting together wines and materials for a Bordeaux tasting right now, and this gave me a lot I can use.

QOTD: My husband rarely drinks wine, and I don’t drink a whole bottle myself all at once (or at least, not usually 🙂 ), and this tends to keep me from decanting. Sometimes if I feel the wine really needs it I’ll decant and then pour what I don’t drink back in the bottle to save for the next day or two. I think after listening to this episode I will resolve to decant more frequently. But — repeating a good question someone else asked — why don’t restaurants decant more often?

  • I agree totally with decanting before drinking, just takes a bit of planning.

QOTD: Why not decant? Good reasons have already been posted. Frankly, I don’t drink a whole bottle in a night or two, so I can see the point of the commenter who said he likes to experience the evolution of the wine in the bottle.

Still: there is no excuse for NOT having a decanter on hand. Get one NOW! You will use it on occasion. For other occasions, I like to slow it down and keep the bottle corked.

I once decanted a wine for 2 weeks and it sucked. I am not sure what all the decanting hype is about.

QOTD: I decant if I am expecting a lot of sediment or if I am drinking what I am sure is a very young wine. Otherwise, why decant? I think that using proper stemware is much more important than proper aeration, especially in the wines I see on the Thunder Show.

  • qotd: “why not …”
A: as an on premise wine buyer/suggester, I find a few reasons not to decant: 1. given the season, the next bottle i open might be a sparkler; 2.i’ve tasted and sell a few bottles that begin to lose their appeal after they open up, therefore if they are the next bottle i open, they should be served immediately after opening;… shit, even these reasons why not to decant seem spurious. Let’s try to decant a champagne, let’s see how that ’07 chilean cab/carmenere tastes with a few hours of breath…. More importantly, how bout today’s guest’s use of the term meniscus???

Gary-QOTD: I don’t really own a decanter but do just leave the bottle open on most all of my wines. I do leave the bottle open for at least one hour before all reds are consumed. 🙂

QOTD: I like to decant nice wines, however I am drinking mostly Montenegrin wines at the moment (I live in Serbia) that I don’t think would really live through a good decanting. Though maybe I will try it latter this week. They are reasonably priced here so if dies I will just throw it on the stove with some spices and make spiced wine. The wife likes that. Then I will just pop open a Prosecco.

I have bin watching for over 1 and half years now and this show is by far the best show (no offence Gary) and I totally agree on the makeup issue
QOTD: because we donâ??t have wine rules!

Great show Gary. I really enjoyed listening to Jeffery explain the many different facets that affect the final product. I hope you keep some of the stones that Jeffery brought as a gift to you.

QOTD: I often decant wine into a small decanter. My wife doesn’t really drink wine, so I decant maybe two glasses worth of wine when I get home and enjoy it with dinner.

Wow, it is refreshing to hear something good that global warming does. Everyone just assumes that global warming is horrible, I think we would all be better off if it were a little warmer! Time to look on the bright side, it is absolutely freezing in the Midwest, has been since Thanksgiving, well below average.

QOTD: Can’t drink that much wine in one sitting, as I am the only wine drinker in the house.

Decanting is fine and dandy, but requires some planning and requires time I don’t always have. That said, if I know I want to have a wine with my dinner, I’ll decant.

I’m always surprised just how much a few hours in a decanter can help a wine though! I had a wine last week that I popped, poured, and drank and thought was pretty darn awful. I only made it halfway through the bottle, so I re-corked and gave it a chance the next day after decanting for 5 hours. Wowza! Mega difference! Still not amazing, but definitely a MUCH better.

Mainly don’t decant because I don’t have a decanter. I’m hoping someone rectifies that this Christmas. Cross your fingers for me!
