qotd no idea

Loved hearing about the Matassa, gonna have to seek it out now.
I'm also a huge advocate of decanting white wine, definitely one of the top misconceptions I see w some wine drinkers along w confusing fruit w residual sugar, serving temperatures, and smelling the cork to inspect a wine's quality.

That steak looked delicious…I’d love to fire my BBQ but I’ve got a foot of snow sitting in my backyard (I am in Montreal)…I do not know what I’ll drink for New Yr’s Eve since I’ll be visiting Dubai (U.A.E.) where you need a special license to buy alcohol :-(…However, I am sure that my friends have secured some good wine, but it remains to be seen.
    Happy holidays

BobM’s post right above mine about Sauternes is a good idea. I may have to do that. I never even think about dessert wines on NYE for some reason.

QOTD: I’ve been LOOKING for the Récoltant Manipulant stuff and am just finding almost none at local retailers. I would hate to have to take metro all the way into DC just to get a bottle of bubbles. I will look again before next week but, failing that, probably my old standby of Roederer NV or maybe Albrecht Cremant d’Alsace.

I almost always prefer a Strip or Ribeye to a Filet.

QOTD: Haven’t decided yet, but it’s down to either an ’00 Robert Young Scion (a bit more Cab Franc in the mix than in other years), an ’02 Cuvaison ATS, or an ’03 Napanook.

  • QOTD: Unfortunately, I’m not drinking a lot these days, New Year’s to be included as my wife is about 8 months pregnant (which I’m thrilled to death about) and is reaching the end of her not-drinking-wine rope. She had half a glass on Christmas Eve (great NZ Sauvignon Blanc) so I’m tending to drink things she doesn’t love like big reds.

  • Gary, I haven’t watched the holiday show yet. I’m waiting for some time when the GF and I can sit down, watch, and taste. But rest assured, you will have one more comment for the holiday thunder show.

QOTD- The rest of the four Christmas bottles. Sharing with some friends. ‘Tis the season, and all.

Thanks for a great year of wine education and fun.

We plan to spend New Years in Toronto with my wifes family. We will likely enjoy a few goods wines and champagnes. I will probably bring a 1997 BV Tapestry (Last one), maybe a 1997 Joseph Phelps Napa Cab. For the bubbly probably NV Aubry and maybe Jean Milan Special or Pol Roger NV.

    Cheers

  • OK….You got me…!!!

I’ll be drinking the Pierre Peters Cuvee Reserve at midnight.

But first with dinner I’ll be drinking the Temple Cab and the Stewart Cab.

    What are you drinking?

  • QOTD: Haven’t decided yet. My wife and me will review the wine shops nearby and make our final decision. Maybe I will have some 1998 Medoc Cru Bourgeois from my cellar to celebrate its tenth birthday, as my wife and me met each other ten years ago…I think it can be good to drink now.

And, I had a Bourgogne Passetoutgrain which got a huge, obvious fishy smell weeks ago in a tasting. That fishy tuna smell was quite offensive at the beginning. But 4 hours later, when people all went away, a friend and me got back to that bottle and we found that something happended there. It turned into a very refreshing eucalyptus style on the nose and on the palate as well. It is not really that bad as we thought, although not excellent. It needs time and we need some patience.

Ok, thanks for showing up on holidays. BTW, how is the steak…It looks not bad and I finally succeed in accessing their website this time…

All the best, and bye for now.:)

Man, those steaks looked good. Now I have to make sure I watch when I have a full stomach or else I am in trouble!

  • Re: Grower Champagne

Tried the Gaston Chiquet followed by a the regular Pol Roger over the holiday. Gary is right, the grower champagne was light years ahead. I am a blanc de blanc guy but the Chiquet was verrry nice, interesting to follow it up with a big house effort. That will be the last bottle of Pol I drink for some time.

New Years Eve is up in the air, have a 1990 Cristal with a soiled label. It might have to be unleashed.

Lurkers should get their own contest; a half bottle of Mollydooker with a cheap piece of beef jerky. No decanting allowed either.

Holiday Lurkers are the worst kind of lurker…varmints

Nice Weber grill there, Gary! I am so glad that you were cooking on something worthwhile…you just can’t beat a Weber!

QOTD: I haven’t picked up my bottle for NYE yet, but I will probably go to my favorite place tomorrow and try to find “something different!”

  • QOTD: More than likely whatever crap I can find from the limited selection of wines that are available here in China. Not really interested in spending twice the price for something twice as bad in value. I’m thinking something Chilean.

  • Wow, didn’t expect an episode the day after Christmas! You really do love us, GV, and I am eternally grateful.

QoTD: Not sure exactly, since I’ll be spending it with my boyfriend’s family and they’ll most likely supply the sparkler…but if it’s Korbel again, I may sneak out and buy some cava or prosecco!

Gary, the big-ass-glass is perfectly proportioned for the 6-liter bottle. In fact, they both make you seem tiny by comparison. How about an episode on dispensing wine from a 6-liter bottle?

QOTD: I’m inviting cabernet friends to my house for New Year’s Eve. I’ll ice a 375ml of champaign for those who insist.

  • Yummy episode! QOTD: Champagne! of course! Rosé Champagne, I just don’t know which one yet. Will go to the wine store today and buy. I do know that is not going to be Moët & Chandon this time. Going for something different and new to us.
