QOTD: Yes. And Yes (more than two), and that includes auslese, beerenauslese as well as spatlese and kabinet (sorry I didn’t have the energy to spell check…damn Germans and their crazy 15 letter, 5 syllable words.)

I came back from the Mosel 2 weeks ago. And for all the Americans that are going to Montalcino year after year I can really recommend to try Mosel instead. It is truly a marvellous, beautiful place. And if you would rank the wine regions of the world in terms of where the hardest labour is, Mosel would be no 1.

You almost can’t imagine how they are able to harvest the grapes in some of the best sites. First they are standing in a slope that has a 60 degree angle and harvesting. Then they “mountain-climb” for 20 minutes with 80 kilos of grapes on their backs, and after that they walk for 15 minutes to get to the tractor, because there are no roads near enough. It’s totally crazy!

With this in mind, Mosel is truly bargain wines. And if you appreciate finess and subtle flavours, there are no better wines in the world. And the ageing potential, it’s oustanding!

I had a 1973 Ã?rziger Würzgarten Spätlese from Weingut CH Berres, it was still fresh as a sunny winter’s day! And extremly complex.

Yeah Gary, do more German Rieslings please!

Good show Gary, must say that I love the Rieslings. We have been on a bit of a local kick here in Michigan, but there is no comparison to the Germans.

QOTD: I have probably had around 20-30 different German Rieslings. I cut my wine teeth on them. Usually a decent price, with a lot of great taste. Not to mention that my wife does not like the reds very much so a riesling is her favorite.

Thanks for the great year and happy new year to you. Much success.

QOTD: I love German rieslings. My favorites are from the Mosel region, but I also enjoy Rhinegau, and Phaltz and other places. JJ Prum is my favorite producer, followed by Dr Loosen. JJ has a couple of cousins in the Mosel area who also makes rieslings. Check out wines from SA Prum, and Studert Prum.

I have like 4 bottles of the 2000 La Tour Carnet. Bought them as futures and they have been sitting in my wine fridge for all those years. I was due to start cracking them because they are getting to the 8 year mark.. Man I hope they are better than the 2003 that GV just tasted.

Gary, you look like another Russian Gary, Gary Kasparov! I mean, when he was younger.
QOTD: Oh yeah, I love Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett, great stuff, complex, refreshing, nice with food. Bmx tires, so that’s what that is :-). Have tried others as well. You can drink a few glasses and not get sloshed too :-). I will definitely seek out the J.J. Prum. I guess 2005 was a great vintage for German Rieslings in general btw.

Huge German riesling fan. Stocked up on 2005 and have around 25 bottles or so in the cellar. Probably my favorite white wine.

    Hello Gary,

I love your show, try to watch as often as possible!
QOTD: YES/YES, I’m from Germany so I really enjoy a lot of Riesling, especially with meals and in summer. From my opinion a good and dry Riesling is nothing sweet but full of fruity flavours with a fine taste of sourness, ideal to enjoy on a warm summer evening.
One of my favorite Rieslings to enjoy in summer is the “2003 Königshöfer Turmberg Kabinet”. 2003 was extremly hot in Germany, so many wines from that year came out very sweet and with high alcohol content. However some winemakers managed to handle the high sugar content of the grapes and produced excellent Rieslings. If any of you should have a German Riesling from 2003 I recommend to enjoy it before it is too old. Due to the low content of acids the wine is not good to keep in your storage.

    Keep on thundering the wineworld!

Intersting wine selections for today. I have not tried a Pinotage as of yet, but shall seek one out to ‘give it a whirl”…

QOTD – Yes & Yes, we enjoy German Rieslings and were in Germany 15 months ago. We usually go prefer a Kabinet. We have also had the JJ Prom Whelener Spatlese and enjoyed as much as you did. JJ makes some wonderful Rieslings!
