QOTD: New Zealand is my go-to location right now for bottles under $20. Especially for sauvignon blanc, but I am really starting to enjoy the pinot noir too.

  • Nice show today. It’s always important to look at those quality bargain wines that allow wine drinkers the opportunity to stock up on something good…or stay away from wines that aren’t. Especially Cab, which are more difficult to find as inexpensive options than most.

QOTD: Being from Washington State, there are some great bargain wine options that I often stock up on – Columbia-Crest Grand Estate Reds, Barnard Griffin Tulip (label) Reds, & Chateau Ste. Michelle Whites, just to name a few.

Gary, Go to red wine at the moment is the Markham Merlot ’04 which you should have on the thunder show. This wine I drank everyday by the glass on vacation in Hawaii and enjoyed with everything from fish to steak. I don’t think any Ca. Cab under $20 can give this kind of class and balance. For whites I like the ’06 Villa Maria S.B., great wine, beautiful package and Jean Marc Brocard Bourgogne Kimmeridgian ’05, bone dry Chardonnay that demands to be drank at cool room temperature and will only get better with time.

Living in Washington, my everyday red is generally a Columbia Crest since it’s a good value and good quality. Everyday white is New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, currently Nobilo. I loved the baseball analogy; does that make a “juicy” wine a Gaylord Perry wine?

QOTD: We try to drink a wide variety, so a go-to wine is pretty much anything we’ve bought more than once in the past few months. For reds, we like the Sharecroppers Pinot Noir, Las Rocas Grenache, Atteca Grenache, Septima Malbec, just to name a few. For whites, Apex II Chardonnay is always a good, value-driven choice. Monkey Bay Sauvignon Blanc and Veramonte Sauv Blanc, and the Naia Verdejo are some fast favorites off the top of my head.

I have been drinking a lot of Vranac from Montenegro lately. I am hoping to change that soon. I am going on a few trips around the region and am buying wine everywhere I go.

  • The “house wine” style at my place is New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, although we change up the producer regularly. Kim Crawford remains my favourite, but I’ve tried others that are pretty good too… like Dog Point. Cloudy Bay’s 2006 vintage was a disappointment, but I hear 2007 was better. Anyway, I digress… 🙂

Dude – get to NC. You won’t regret it.

QOTD: I’m stuck on Tempranillo. Love Riojas, but found a tasty gem from Australia recently. I know you want me to try new things. I have, and I keep coming back to what my pal loves.

this is my first post ever. I was saving myself for something special , well a chance to influence Gary’s travel plans seems like a worthy time to throw in my 2 cents. I live in charleston sc and I would gladly drive to nc to get to hang out. There are several other topics i would like to address however i will wait on those.

QOTD: The Berco Do Infante you turned me on to. I finally found a wine between $5-$10 that was complex, had structure, and was not fake. Thanks for this. My search is over and I bought 4 cases so this could become the “house wine”.

GV, love the return of “whether they like it or not”. Keep it in the mix!

QOTD: Everyday reds are mostly Rhones right now. Still some nice ’03’s and ’04’s around and the ’05’s rock! Whites are all over the place: finishing off the Hermit Crab’s and moving on……
Hope FLA is curing your cold.
