I think you should make a “Changing the wine world whether they like it or not”
T-SHIRT. QOTD – tough question, but if I have one “go to” wine it would be the 2001 Ruffino Gold Reserve Chianti for red, and the 2005 Pierre a Feu Touraine for white (of which I hope you get more in stock).

QOTD: I do not want to fall into a wine rut and being new to wine tasting, I still have lots to try. However, in the past two weeks I discovered a wine for $9.95(CN) that I have been introducing to friends called La Patriarche 2005 Syrah and Pinot Noir.

    Great show as always…

Here is a little perspective/history on the Rex Goliath brand that might be of interest.

It was created in 2002 by Hahn Estates/Smith & Hook (monterey, CA) and their timing and marketing was spot on. Helped by a huge glut of good grapes on the market and by putting what was reputed to be very, very good wines for very attractive prices (started around $5) built it up from the intitial 19,000 cases to 300,000 cases in 2004 and on track for 500,000 cases in 2005. But, was purchased by Constellation in 2005 for an undisclosed amount that is rumoured to be in the $40-45 million range (http://zinquisition.blogspot.com/2005/08/constellation-buying-rex-goliath.html). At that point I believe it lost the vintage on the lable. But this is a pretty amazing ROI for Hahn Estates and a great wine business case study!

So, it would have been intersting to have had your opinion of the wine prior to the change in winemaking teams. So in Chris viola’s defense (since he is now known for liking this wine)- It might have been a much better brand just a couple years ago…

But… it does not end their… Hahn Estates has a another value brand to take the Big Rooster’s place. They now have the Cycles Gladiator brand of which the 2005 Central Coast Cabernet Sauvignon was rated #11 Top Rated Wine of the Year by Wine Enthusiast.

So, why not try Rex Goliath’s cousin (Cylcle Gladiator)before it get’s sold off?

QOTD: Our go to wine is happening less and less every day as we get more and more educated… but I would have to say if we had one it is the Brancott Sauvignon Blanc (NZ)

  • Nick

I really doin’t have an “everyday wine” right now. I’m trying to drink as much different stuff as I can. I’m am liking the 05 Bordeaquxs.

  • Listen to Dave, come to Canada!! Niagara region baby!

QOTD: right now I have a case of Laura’s Red, a Meritage from Niagara, great little winery called Creekside Estates run by some very cool folks. It’s my pull out, decant and start fraggin’ on COD4.

NC party?? I’m there with bells on, no pasties.

QOTD: No everyday vino while working in the business, just samples. And i like it like that.

GV you must come to NC! I will rally the troops to meet ya! While NC wines are less than spectacular, this is a great place to visit!

QOTD: I used to have an every day go to line of wines (Angeline by Courtney Benham} but now my everyday wine goal is to try something new $10-15.

I don’t have a daily wine, though lately I’ve been having lots of fun exploring Italian reds. There is a wine that I open fairly regularly (and have a stash of at home) — the 2005 Zenato Valpolicella Superiore Ripassa. It’s what I drink when my husband opens a wine I don’t end up liking. 🙂

  • sonnybobiche

My go-to wine when I have to depend on a tiny retailer without a lot of selection has to be the Kendall Jackson Cabernet. Sorry, but it’s true.
When I’m rollin deep, though, it’s Clos Du Val cab (which, yes, you totally did unfairly pan!)

QOTD: I’ve been trying all different wines so there’s no one that I go back to, but as far as types of wine, I consistently like Barbera and Malbec.

Nice ending today, being swept off screen by the turning tide….

  • Good show and great analogy re: Darth Vader and the Pats.

Party in NC? Make it in Sept in the OBX and I’m there. As an FYI, my most favorite wine restaurant (Elizabeth’s Winery & Cafe) is located in Duck. You would love it!

    QOTD: Oregon Pinots

    Cheers!

  • I just read KODI’s comment and agree with him on a sniffy-sniff and taste of the Cycles Gladiator. A friend of mine just sent me an email recommending it highly but I don’t believe WLTV carries it. Bummer

  • amgryger

QOTD: I am always trying new things, but the closest I have to “go to wine” is Cote Du Rhone for red and Muscadet for white. I say closest because they aren’t really wines I have around all the time, but they are sort of reliable fall backs when I want/need and inexpensive wine, but don’t necessarily want a complete unknown.

  • Hey Gary….

I am a simple guy when it comes to wine. My everyday wine is whatever we have laying around which we haven’t drank.

Usually it will be Vinho Verde, Malbec, Tempranillo, Shiraz…

    Cheers!

QOTD, Jumilla reds baby! Great go to wines, i.e. Luzon, Juan Gil, Carchello.
Also, Portugese Douro Reds!! These most often then not seem to outperform their price range. Thats where I be right now!

Gary. Loved the old games reference! Let’s not forget playing Donkey Kong on ColecoVision!

QOTD: Everyday win is a Meritage (ala Twenty Rows Grappler) or a Super Tuscan (ala Altesino Rosso Di Altesino)

QOTD: My daily wines for now are mainly from France and especially Bordeaux region. But I have a plan to try some more 2005 things from Italy. Whatever, much more Bordeaux in the supermarkets and wine shops than any other wine. That is a big reason why I am drinking it – Easy to get…

Go to wine….? That’s why I have a cellar,,, I drink what I feel like and having listened to you… don’t have a ton of any one thing. So I go to a wine that will go with what I’m eating or haven’t drank in awhile.

Request?? Isn’t about time Sir Gary comes for a visit???? He brings some class and control with all these sports this and that analogies….. let’s have some serious discussion about wine shall we???

    😉
