  • Ben Janssen South Australia

Been to Bordeaux and had a few Sauternes.
When I came home to Australia once of the first things I did was seek out Aussie Sauternes’s only to be disappointed. So far I have found them to have over the top fakeness. Tasting more like lemonade and fruit juice. Big price point on the Sauternes. I’m glad I brought some back from Bordeaux.

Ok, my initial response was a bit emotional, sorry about that
    QOTD:
I had a Sauterne that my grandfather, a big wine appreciator, brought to a family holiday meal. It was good though much sweeter than any wine I had tasted before. It was like honey that had been diluted but not lost any of it’s sweetness or richness, it was just more liquid. It was pretty impressive, than it was sweet without being thin.

Dolce is too sweet in my opinion… it’s good, but not worth the price, and has less apricot, botrytis goodness than good sauternes…

QOTD: *and I have to say it’s a pretty weak question* but I’ll answer it not the less: I like tasty wines. I’ve had some Sauternes that was awesome and I’ve had some that tasted like plain old apricots and honey with nothing exciting to them. I’m not a huge sweets fan so I’m a little biased but when they come in with balance of sugar, fruit and acidity I’m all bouty bouty. But that’s the same with everything. No one bats 1000 and no wine region or producer puts out 100 pt. wines every vintage. So, yeah, if it’s good I like it. If it sucks I’m not such a big fan.

Trockenbeerenauslese is the greatest word in all of wine, in my opinion… also great are icewines… which can be so damn concentrated with flavor… man, i can just imagine a bucket full of trockenbeerenauslese, icewine, sauternes, petit verdot jam and other jams and fresh honey all mixed together and dumped over the buttocks of gary and other pretty girls and slathering it in while they recite poems and laugh and it would be great with excellent sexuality!

  • You are hilarious. I’m glad you played the dissapointed card. Changing levels is always entertaining.
QOTD: I like Sauternes. Had a De Fargue (non vintage) recently that I wasn’t so impressed by, but the Chateau Guiard non vintage is exceptional. I was lucky enough to try a low end Royal tokaji…holy crap. That was a dessert wine in a class of it’s own.

QOTD: Im still in cheap man wine mode, but I like the fact that you have all these varieties because it lets me know what I should be looking to track down as I develop my personal wine tasting library.

Hells Yeah, I’m bringing the THUNDER today baby! I LOVED the episode GV. From the sarcastic start to the fantastic finish, I was one the edge of my seat begging for more ;). Come on people, leave a freaking comment! Tens of thousands watch, 680 leave a comment -what kind of support is that on a 2-year anniversary!?! This is free TV! Normally, it takes millions to run a television show, and all GV just wants is a little emotional support. All you have to do is type your name and email into the appropriate boxes and click ‘add comment’. You don’t even HAVE to think in order to leave a comment. Your post counts toward the total no matter what you write in the comment section…

QOTD: Maybe I’ll try some Sauternes if the wine bar/restaurant will put it on the receipt as “expensive grape juice”. Then -and only then- would my expense account pay for it!

  • Awesome episode!! really, really classy and nice. QOTD: I love Sauternes!! I have a small (not so small anymore) sub-collection of Sauternes and dessert wines. I have a couple of 1996 Chateau de Roland, which is the year that my older son was born, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have drunk two or three bottles of that one. I had a couple of Chateau Giraud, which is 1er Cru, but drank them. Gary, THANKS for all you do. It’s all so much fun and A LOT of thunder spread around.

Glad to see you did a tasting on sweet wines. Pricey but worth seaking out at least once in your lifetime, very individualistic wines with a lot of character.

No reason for you to be down for not reaching a 1000 — Just think, 600+ comments…where else could you see that? Sometimes it’s more about the content of the comments than the numbers. And as long as you keep bringing the thunder, there’s always a chance to reach that goal. GV, your the man! Enough said. QOTD — Never had it but will give it try.

That was depressing. Fire up! 😉 Too many good things in the world to think about. Appreciate the wine education today– admittedly pricy wine, so have not had one yet. Even 1/2 bottle would be tought to throwdown. Maybe, some day on an expense account, bonus day situation! Looking forward to the old Gary later today!

GV I too am bummed more comments weren’t left. I know there out there cause I’ve told at least 500 people. I know you will be back in full swing as you are to passionate to be down for long. Hang tough GV you make a lot of people smile.
The dessert wines I have had come in much smaller bottles, very nice though.

very interesting show. it’s helpful to see different vintages of the same wine. and i am all about the pairing episodes – i’d love to see more of those.

qotd: i might have had a sauternes before but i’m not 100% certain. anyways, the white dessert wines i have had have always been delicious…in smallish doses.

can’t wait for the 4 pack!!!

GV, your problem is you don’t fully understand the world of statistics! Only half the world is awake every 24 hours and other half is at work so the data must be normalized. 755*((0.5*0.5)+(1)+(0.5*0.5))= 1132.5 YESSS!! Congratulations on your second anniversary and thanks for the 2ANNI special.
