I like the vertical approach. It must be difficult to to with inventories though.

I do like Sauternes, but it also signals an end to the wine drinking at a gathering.

  • Ok, so it looks like we’re not gonna make it YET AGAIN!

I challenge everyone to a top comment on the list duel! I am gonna fight to keep one of my comments in the most recent 2 under the episode!

If you get tired of all my lame posts, bury them!

This was soooo cool. Red wines come in dark bottles and you can’t see their color evolution. It was fascinating to see how the color of these wines evolves over time (even between the ’03 & ’01). Thanks for doing this vertical tasting.

It’s funny how the one thing that you cannot suppress, even when you are “majorly” bummed, is the SNIFFY SNIFF. We would miss it if it didn’t show up either.

Sincerest apologies for not leaving a comment yesterday! I am just now catching on to the Thunder show. Fantastic! Please don’t get down about the “Vaniacs” not hitting the target yesterday. I’m sure there were hundreds, no, thousands of newbies out there who caught the show but haven’t been caught up in the wave of enthusiasm enough to leave a comment. . . yet! Oh they will . . . they absolutely will! As the Japanese would say, “Gary-san, genki dashite . . . ganbatte kudasai!”

  • I’m not a big desert wine guy, but I will try one of these. Cheese is good good, and the nWo rules.

  • QOTD: No.

The low-tone GV is just fine. To do a show like this 5 days a week you are to be commended on your constant high energy approach. Nothing wrong with the occassional softer approach.

Try comparing the 1990 to La Tour Blanche 1990 my favorite D’Yquem substitute. I would be very interested in the outcome. I still have a few bottles in the cellar.

I only had one Sauternes so far, Chateau de Malle, and I had it with a
Roquefort. Fantastic pairing! The cheese, the wine! This is as perfect as it gets for wine and cheese!

Gary V – buck up ol’ chap! We like the saucy GV, yo! I’ve never had the chance to try Sauternes – its not in the stupid budget. But give me time – this company is going to take off and then I’m winin’ it up!

GV, just getting caught up on my WLTV over the past few days…dessert wines rock, so interesting. Esp like Sauternes. Don’t let the snow get you down! Idea for a good QOD for Mr. GV – what would you drink if you were trapped in the Wine Library in a snow storm?

Hi, it’s often tough to keep going but you just have to march on. The show is quite valuable as a tasting reference point. I love sauternes – I bought a case of the 2001 Laufaurie Peraguay. It is stunning – fabulous complexity and a super presence of botrytis. Tonnes of pear and peach flavours but cut across by mature acid and angular botrytis. I give it 95. I also have the 1988 Guiraud. It’s a beautiful gold brown colour but in fact not as good as the 01 LP despite the vintage. I give it 91. I have the 03 Reuissec – I agree with your assesment on the 03s, they are somewhat flabby. I give it 90.

Anyway I’ll look out for the 90 and 01 de fargues, maybe the 05 en primeur. By the way, tried the 05 meyney, it was super. I agree the 05 Bordeaux are top. Keep up the good work. You can’t be on top form every day.

  • Wine Not?

Cheer up, Gary! You have more fans out there than most people have hairs on their head! Seriously!!!!

QOTD: Sauternes….big YUM on that! We did an “Aging Gracefully” tasting about a month ago and finished with a d’Yquem. It wasn’t that old (2002, I think) but still was a beautiful mouth of honey! And I would never drink one without a nice hunk of blue cheese around somewhere!

  • Bill & Wendy Wilcox

Wendy and I had a Sautern in-house so we tried it along with you. Lots of fun with our cheese and desert.

BTW, Remember those who did try to make it 1000… we are still here!

So now, knock it out of the park!

Come on man….everyday above ground is a good day.

I love those wines, just so ya know….and I can’t wait to try those.

    Hope you are better tomorrow.

  • QOTD: I’ve never had a sauternes wine :'(, yet another area to go exploring :D, loved the episode. I assume when it comes to dessert wines that if they have a good acid fruit balance (fair chunk o’ acid) that they’ll typically age a few years. I have a few cheapies (15$/375mL) that I picked up in 1/2 cases so I’ll be able to answer it myself in a few years but hopefully I’m not wasting my time.

Keep up the effort, people are starting to leave comments – it’s improving month over month the averages are up!

  • Dave from VA

QOTD: Gotta give it a try, had an interesting white dessert wine from Kluge here in VA recently that is aged in bourbon barrels and is pretty tasty. In general I prefer port for after-dinner beverages.
