YES I have one of the original wristbands, but you already knew that I was hardcore.

By the way- I LOVE this head-to-head format, with the same varietal produced from different regions of the world. KILLER show concept.

QOTD: I bought a Connonau from Sicily the other day, plenty of pencil shavings, burnt rubber, prune, leather(?) and some other interesting aromas and flavors…all for $10 U.S. bones. VERY happy with this unique wine and the QPR.

    Hey Gary-
I can’t really remember what the last wine was that made me have that reaction….There was a Rose from Tavel (Grandes Serres?) and the Bernardus Monterey Chardonnay.

I tasted a 2001 Mocali Brunello di Montalcino Vignes del Raunate (which I’m told means “Vineyard of the Gophers”). It was awesome! It had me speechless. Kicked some serious butt.

QOTD – Recently tasted the Arrocal you showed in a previous episode and it blew me away considering most Spanish wine I tasted in the past were exremely rustic and dirty – this was a nice ripe red with a lot of finesse.

    Awesome show Gary!!
I love pinot noirs, and this show just got me all hyped early on a friday morning to try some from anderson valley.

Actually I bought A Case of the 2005 Amisfield…Think It Had More Complexity and Better Mouthfeel than the 2006. As good as you are raving about the Phillips Hill I still think at $40 bones…the best combination for a Pinot Noir of Old World/New World Combined is still coming out of Willamette Valley Oregon in that Price Range. Try Some 2005 Beaux Freres Upper Terrace or One Of the Top 100 Wine Spectator Wines like at $30 2005 Erath Dundee Hills Estate Selection 91 Points Wine Spectator only 12.5% Alcohol…Mushrooms and Dirt For Days on The Nose!!. BTW The 2005 Amisfield Pinot was the #22 Wine Of The Year On Spectators 2007 Top 100 ! QOTD…. on your Recommendation the 2003 Cougar Crest Walla Walla Valley Reserve Syrah….Boy did that Wine Blow Me Away…I went On Line and bought another 6 bottles!!!

  • After 400+ episodes, still some of the most fun episodes. Showdowns are fun! Pinot Noir is a lot of fun! QOTD: Majella Sparkling Shiraz, but also 1999 Chateau Musar, from Lebanon.

Phillips Hill doesn’t have a mailing list, but, I’m quite sure they’re gonna need one now.

QOTD – 2002 J. Wilkes Pinot Noir, Lot ?, Bien Naciedo, CA. Redonkulous!!

  • Great episode! I don’t like the way those glasses look. Too wide at the top or something….like your whole face was getting swallowed in them when you took a sniffy sniff!

QOTD: A $10 Portuguese wine that I had.

Pinot Battle: Comments that should be made is that Central Otago is the most southerly wine region in the world. One of the coolest as well – Long hangtime for Pinot Noir. The 2005 vintage in Anderson Valley is outstanding across the board. A definitive buy.
Can you comment on the clonal differences or do you feel that perhaps that conversation is too esoteric?

  • Carlitos

    I guess I’m hard core… :S
