I was very pleasantly suprised by several dry German Rieslings this past Tuesday. I know that you only have great things to say about Riesling but before Tues I hadn’t found one that I liked. It’s hard to find quality and variety in the small PA state stores where I live.

There have been many out of body wine experiences but a few that come to mind was the 2003 Couvent Des Jacobins, my favorite of the 12 days of Christmas. The 2003 Avaton was great and the 2005 Ghisolfi Pinay was killer. Going back a year or so, the 2003 Pontac Lynch that was in a tasting of ’04 Bordeaux which included several 2nd growths was spectacular, for me easily the best wine of the tasting. I bought it and a couple of cases of the 05 from you guys.

The last eye-opener I had was the 1999 Banfi Brunello di Montelcino. I think it was the first Brunello I had ever tasted and it was fantastic.

  • QOTD: The last wine that did that to me was 2003 Diego Conterno Barolo. MIND BLOWING GOOD. The best Barolo I have ever tried and I have tried HUNDREDS. For the price vs. quality….UNBEATABLE.

  • Does Brandon know about that Phillips Hill Pinot?

    This format is GOOD.

QOTD – Sorry to sing the same old song again, but Chateau Musar 1999 – even though it was 8 months ago now. A South African Chenin Blanc, Rijk’s Private Cellar 2005, came close at Christmas, definately the best white this year.

QOTD 2006 Belle Vallée Pinot Noir Reserve, had it with a very well prepared duck dish. First Oregon Pinot I have had in quite a while and it reminded me of while I used to be such a huge fan. Sure 40 bones is a lot, but this one brought it.

QOTD: 2000 Derszla Aszu Eszencia from the Wine Library Bordeaux wine dinner at the Manor last week. The Derszla was a luscious dessert wine with peach, honey, and apple flavors. Knocked my socks off!

I have had the 05 and 06 Amisfield and liked them a lot. The Toulouse sounds amazing. Went right to their site and bought some. They don’t have a mailing list but you can buy their wine (usually its the other way around). Sounds like they also have another one “Opennlander”, that they charge a bit more for. Could it be better?
Gary, you are right on about Anderson Valley. Especially 06.

QOTD: a 1995 Vincent Girardin burgundy from Chambertin. Can’t remember the vineyard, but it was premier cru. Outstanding stuff. That or the 2004 Walter Hansel North Slope Pinot Noir.
