QOTD : 2005 La Spinetta Pin – for me, it brought the Thunder. Smooth & soft tannins, medium bodied, well balanced, raspberries & hint of tobacco, something else in flavor profile – I can’t put my finger on what it was – but it was intriguing…..

  • J Crazy

Last wine I had was the Philippe Jambon: Le Franche. It only brought the thunder after a couple of days being opened. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Jambon and he had an interesting comment about non sulphited wines and biodynamic wines: they change more-so than other wines over a period of hours and days. After opening it it was quite rotten tomato acid-esque but on the third day it really opened up with it’s strawberry, pepper watermelon fruit and the acidity was much more pleasant.
So here’s my question back to you GV: Have you ever tried a wine over the course of a couple weeks to more than a month. If you haven’t PLEASE PLEASE grab a few bottles (try to make one of them either Jambon, Olivier Riviere, Guy Jullien, Patrick Meyer, or Gerome Joulet) and taste the wines once a week over the course of a month.

QOTD: Pepperwood Pinot, yes I know it’s cheap as hell. But we bought an assload before we started to learn about all the alternatives to “everyday” wine. No thunder was brought, not even a slight rain sprinkle.

    Welcome back Gary!

  • Ch.St.Georges 375ml, 2005 St.Emilion. Here’s my review on cellartracker.com

“violets and oak on the nose, decanted (375 ml bottle) for less than an hour but was amazingly drinkable despite the young age. Balanced, long finish. When I asked Eva what the wine comprised of, she said simply: “good stuff” (marzipan). Amazingly good value for $16 (half bottle), probably drinkable now because of the smaller bottle. Wine celebrity equivalent = Tom Hanks (not flashy, but better performance than you expect).”

QOTD: 2004 Herons Flight Sangiovese. NZ$50 bones, had it last night for my good friends birthday – it was his wine, and I would give it 89+. A little thunder, but probably needs a couple more years. At $50 I would have to give it a pazzz for now.

Good to have you back GV

    BOOM!

  • LarryTheWineGuy

Last Wine I was Finishing As I Watched This Episode was 2002 Stella Maris Columbia Valley Red Blend Cab 51% Merlot, And about 5% Malbec. Once it aerated I enjoyed the Lamb Fat Gamey Aromas, Expresso, Chocolate Notes. On The Palate Nice Mid-Palate Black Cherry, Plum, finishing with a Medium to Firm Tannin Grip and Some Dark Chocolate aftertones. Finish was a little short and the Wine lacked a little Depth. QPR..not their I think Spectator Gave it 89..and I think they are in the Ballpark but for the Money I would rather spend it on a Wine that brought a little more Thunder. Great to have you back GV

Good to have you back Gary! If any of those folks can’t be at the tasting feel free to reach out to me haha πŸ˜‰ I’m pumped about the Vayniac Wine project as well as the new mystery packs!

QOTD: I shared a bottle of Barth Rene Roemerberg Gewurztraminer with my lovely girlfriend this weekend. She is more into wine with some residual sugars so this seemed like a good compromise. It was a bit sweet for me, but the refreshing fruit both on the nose and the immediate pallet made it decent for me. She enjoyed the sweet finish and I think she definitely enjoyed it more than I did. I would rate it solid.

QOTD – 2005 Rosenblum Lyon’s Reserve. I like most of the Rosenblum Zins, and I liked this one too, but it wasn’t good enough to justify the $45 price tag. A little over the top in both fruit and oak.

Each evening after work, I read my mail, have a little snacky snack, a glass of wine, and watch the Thunder Show. Tonight, I finished a bottle of wine that I sampled out around town today(I am a wine rep in Reno) The Talley Rincon Pinot Noir was perfect with my pretzels as I watched your “return episode.”
    We missed you, Gary…welcome home!
    If I order a two-pack will you include a wrist band??? It’s a deal.
    Cheers!

  • Great to have you back GV! Can’t wait to hear about the France highlights, sad about our poor dollar…

QOTD: 2003 Koine Primitivo de Manduria. Absolutely delicious, inexpensive primitivo that beats the pants off of many Cali Zins.

  • Smith MBA

QOTD: 2006 Benziger Sauvignon Blanc MacLeod Family Vineyards
