  • QOTD: Really dug a Drylands Sauv Blanc lately. I’m certainly a NZ Sauv Blanc fan, the varietal holding my ‘fav’ position in whites right now, for all the reasons you mentioned in this episode.

Sorry I’ve been away for a while. I moved. I have some catch-up to do…

  • I love crisp ‘n clean Whites! So no question, Sauvignon Blanc is one of my favorits. NZ brings out more and more high quality and regarding the last years, they are wearing less make-up, means a little ore trueness and balance, not so over-the-top as often seen in the past years. One of the best efforts (for my palate) is the Saint Clair Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2007. But i also love the South African Steenberg SB an even Germany can rip it, with guys like Markus Schneider (Pfalz).

I remember when I was younger watching my step-mother having her nightly glass of SB from the jug bottle. When I got older and was allowed a taste I gagged. Maybe after watching this episode I’ll try the SV.
At this time I’m drinking a Taylor Flads 20 year, the only way to top off a day.

N.Z Love Drylands 2007… I agree with the Vayniacs Kim Crawford 2006 KILLED It…07 even though Spectator just gave it 91 Points.. not nearly the depth of flavors as the 2006. For California… I hate them as well… except really enjoy the QPR for Chateau St Jean 2006 Fume Blanc.. Sonoma… Aged in French And American Oak for 5 months..to enrich the texture and soften the acidity…and addition of a little bit of Semillion…you get flavors of Melon, Honeysuckle, Pear, Orange Zest…great buy for $13.00

  • Nice episode, Gary. I’m spreading the Thunder in the STL. I just had a nice little SB from Chile, the Santa Rita Reserva. The Santa Rita 120 is not bad, but the Reserva has better character.

    Cheers!

Can’t really say I’m a fan of SB yet, but I finally found one without the least whiff of tomcat. I enjoyed it similarly to the first ever unoaked chard I tried. It’s Santa Rita “120” (’07, Chile). I’ll definitely go back to it come Okanagan summer. In the meantime, have a few more brands of NZ to try â?? so far just too reminiscent of those damned cats in my shrubbery.

My wife took me out for dinner for my birthday tonight, and I ordered the cheapest meal on the menu (spaghetti ai funghi) so that I could spring for a nice wine. I thought I might be able to try an Amarone, as they had a split of (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, Teldeschi 2000 375ml). But the split was $60, so I had to settle for a glass of something else. Wonderful happenstance, cuz one of the choices was a Larose Osoyoos Petales. MARVELOUS!

So, back to the whites, I guess I’d have to say that I’m partial to _unoaked_ chardonnay and _unpissed_ sauvignon blanc…

best sauvignon blancs are are from NZ…apart from the “celebrated ” cloudy bay…taste the Seresin as that is awesome…also Highfield although anything from Marlborough is good.
most SB’s from Oz are poor by comparison but Shaw and Smith is worth a try.
    greetings from Hong Kong

Love the head to head format.

Hope you’re having an awesome time in S.F. get to Boudin’s for the MOST AMAZING sourdough frenchbread clam chowder soup in bread bowl EVER.

QOTD: Not drinking a lot these days but I’m a big fan of Galante’s Sav. Blanc. It’s rich and goes almost to the “not a chardy sav again” but pulls back with good balance and acidity just at the right moment.
