  • Vouvray. Not a fan of American Chenin Blanc. I prefer the Chenin Blancs o Loire Valley. Will certainly try the South African one though. Agree with Carl on the Clos de Nouys, did not like it at all. Maybe next time you taste Chenins GV go for the dessert and sparkling varieties as I am always looking for good ones of those.

I had Chidaine’s entry level Touraine, but the Sauvignon Blanc ‘Collection’ 2006. It is good, too. His ‘Clos du Breuil’ is great.

QOTD: Domaine de Baumard, Savennieres, Clos de Saint Yves 2001

Honey, wax, limestone, hazelnut, quince, very floral and razor-sharp acidity 🙂
    Yum!

Have been impressed with S. African Chenin as well. Like the Ken Forrester line of chenins. Also Steenberg. Huge fan of Raats Family Wine Chenin “Original” sans oak.

As the warmer weather of mid/late spring and summer approach, I find my self wanting to try more white wines. I haven’t tried Chenin Blanc yet but it will be at the top of my list on my next wine buying outing. Love the show!!

I thought ‘O’ was that ‘water show’ in Vegas…cirque de soleil thing…
Anyway, nice coverage on the Chenin. It’s one of those ‘under the radar’ varietals. Last one? Vouvray. Finished off the bottle with my wife. I served Broadway Joe quite a few years ago for dinner. Quite the gentleman. In his soft-spoken southern drawl he orders a Dewar’s. He sniffy-sniffed it and said, that smells good….but I ordered an O’Douls! I said, (Making a ‘T’ sign with my hands, referee-style) “Fumble!” He was understanding. Rectified, he was happy with the switchout. Great episode, Gary.

Blindtasting idea that Tom K had is nuclear. I’m an aspiring sommelier. Your insights are accelerating my appreciation and analysis of all sorts of wines. Kudos.

Last Sunday, Ken Forrester Chenin Blanc 2006. We had a number of our closest friends over for the South African wine tasting. Very interesting grape, great region.
Enjoying your show, waiting for my copy of your book.
    Cheers,

    Michael.

Great Show: I have enjoyed Chenin Blanc for many years but still I do not drink them very often. The last Chenin Blanc I had was the 2002 Dry Creek.

A few weeks ago, I opened up a bottle of 1994 Domaine Aux Moines Savennieres Roche Aux Moines. The guy in the wine shop said it was excellent. After I tasted it, I spat it out. It tasted like lighter fluid. When we took it back, they tasted it and said that that was how it was supposed to taste. Now I know not to buy aged white wines.

Fortunately, I had a Vouvray from 2006 on hand that made a really good backup.

  • QOTD: Had the Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc/Viognier blend a few weeks ago, and it ROCKS for the QPR. As far as straight Chenin Blanc, I had one from Omega Cellars in Lockeford (Cali) last year…which was very dry and crisp. And like GV said, Chenin Blanc can change from year to year, especially Omega’s which goes from dry to fruity depending on the vintage

QOTD: An off-dry sparkling Touraine imported by Jon David Hedrick of Chapel Hill, NC. Delicious. He’s really brining in some interesting things. Now, can I watch tomorrow?? : )

Tried the Mulderbosch (2005)Chenin Blanc last year (September) I have a hard time with S. Africa. Such a young wine country, no respect from the general wine community (including me). I will watch to see what comes of this small wine producing region.
The wine, I did not particularly enjoy the secondary floral on the palate. What surprised me was the lingering on the palate. I was expecting the wine not to be longlasting. Typically lemony, zesty and notes of melon (typical) All I could think of was “come on… show me the money”. It did not!

Great Show! What about some props to Montecillo Rioja (1987)?
