QOTD: The last wine under $10 I had was Forest Glen 2003 white zinfandel. I found it to be a rather interesting wine, it reminded me of bottled lemon iced tea with other fruit flavors.

THANKS GARY for a value wine episode.

QOTD: I really like the Washingston state grocery store wines…Columbia Crest Two Vines Merlot was so good; Covey Run Riesling also good. Also, even though Yellow Tail gets it’s share of bashing, I really liked the Shiraz-Grenache blend. How can they get that much fruit and only 13.5% alcohol? Do they remove it? Water it down?

This wine is not only the best sub-$10 wine I’ve had in the last year, but in truth I’ve never tasted better at this price point. From Basilicata, one of my favorite regions:
04 Ars Poetica â??Vulcanoâ? (Basilicata IGT). Terrific wine for $9 (MacArthur, D.C.). Purely Aglianico (100%). Nose is low-lying at first, but picks up haunting violets up high. Flavor is complex, austere, with plenty of tannin, but more than enough earth and dark elegant fruit, with some of the characteristic spice and tar of this grape, and more high flowery tones to balance. Very Old World, but with more fruit than the purely traditional wines, a very good winemaking effort.

Nice show – big save at the end. Actually, I’ve had a couple of the EVIL wines and they were both awful to my PAL.

QOTD: The best under $10 wine I had recently was the 2004 Castano Hecula Yecla wine. Very nice Spanish red table wine for about $9.00 at the time I bought it a couple of years ago.

    QOTD:Lindemans Bin 70 2006, Chardonay/Riesling, SE Australia $5 !!
First time I chose a wine from Austalia – broadening our pallets – and we LOVED it. I wanted to go back to the store (Meijer-Grand Rapids MI) & buy a case! I was always afraid to try new wines, but you have encouraged me to jump out of my box 🙂

I like the 2005 Castano quite a lot, so maybe take this with a grain of salt: Alba Liza 65% tempranillo, 35% grenache, $8-9.

Looking forward to the Taja. I love high value wines!!

    Hey GV and friends.
Being a CKC, my price range is 7 to 14 bones. The last two bottles Iâ??ve got my hands on included a Jean Bousquet Rose (60% Malbec and 40% Cab) from Mendoza and a SIMI 2006 Sauvignon Blanc. The medicine flavors on back end of the Rose caught me by surprise. The SIMI was simple. No razor blades, just butter knifes.
Thank you GV, for advising the nation to try new wines. I have tried new wine, without any repeats, for the last 10 months. Six months ago, I would never buy a white wine. After drinking them regularly, it is easy to see why GV says whites are just as good as reds. This Jean Bousquet is the first Rose Iâ??ve ever had. No regrets. Both wines under 8 bones.

2005 Castle Rock Monterey Pinot Noir. $8.99 There are no good Pinot Noirs at 8.99 much less 15.99 but this is a balanced, serious, well made Pinot. The exception that just proves the rule, I guess. Bought it last year around August. All gone now and haven’t seen it since even in ’06 livery. They do have an ’06 Mendocino at 14.99. Haven’t tried it yet.

QOTD. Little James Basket Press, for $9 at my local wine store. It’s mostly (or maybe all) grenache from Southern France. The producer is Saint Cosme, located in the Rhone, but I’m not sure that all the grapes are sourced from there.

Smoking Loon Merlot – a great bottle in the 6 – 7 dollar range. Easy drinking, smooth fruit, cherries, maybe some chocolate, very light acid. An awesome wine at this price for a Tuesday night.

Terre del Sole Chardonnay from Pasqua, which i had with a bunch of other budget wines to review in a university newspaper. It was the only one I could see myself buying.

QOTD: Another Jumilla. The 2004 Enciro Jumilla brought some thunder. Certainly not a perfect wine–it had some chemically funk to it at times–but I really enjoyed drinking it. I’ve got to find some more Mourvèdre.

QOTD (of yore) Bro brought over a bottle of Spanish red last night, and I swooned at the sniffey-sniff, almost fell out of my chair on tasting it. Luckily, most everyone else was drinking white, so I got to enjoy a good amount of this wonderful juice. So good I had to check it out on WLTV this morning, and wonder of wonders, found it.

But hold on â?? Gary’s rating it ~84 and a pazzzz! Castano C Monastrell ’06 – I’m with Miller or Reynolds on this one!!

    Happy Canada Day t’ y’all!

I had my first monastrell/mourvedre as I rewatched the â??Castano Momastrellâ? part of this episode. It was 2005 Hecula Monastrell. I got a little blueberry and black pepper on the nose. Very dry on the palate. I liked it.
