  • I’m a lurker and I’ve just commented so get off my back. Anyone ever tell you that you kinda look like a cross between Eli Manning and Jeremy Shockey? lol. Wish you hadn’t asked me to comment now don’t you?

  • John Hanna

The Reserve Yellow Tail 2006 Shiraz

For under $10 I like it

QOTD #1 – Sporting the vintage wrist band as I write this!

I was told the upside down EVIL was so that when people were pouring it in a restaurant setting those being served could read it. Maybe…I don’t know.

QOTD #2 – From the same importer as EVIL comes “Hare’s Chase”. I think it is a tad more than $10 but I thought it was quite decent considering the price. Not as jammy as some of the other Aussie wines.

The most memorable wine under ten dollars that I’ve had in quite some time is the 2006 Pascual Toso Malbec (8.99). Elegant, rich, full bodied, great wine.

Alright Mr. V! Earlier in the week I opened up a bottle of Mano A Mano and right off the back I thought I was at a BBQ and someone had been smoking something for too long. Not that kind of smoke!
Just a real smokey nose and taste. The second day just slightly, and by the third day it reminded me of old-world shiraz. I enjoyed how it evolved over the few days and plan on getting a BUNCH of this.

I had high hopes for EVIL being that it has such a cool label…another reason why buying wines is such a hit-or-miss operation. THis happens on the show all the time, you see something good “on paper” but it can actually disappoint you.

Just catching up on episodes. Appreciate your effort to feature good quality ‘daily drinkers’ at solid QPRs.

QOTD – 2006 Pascual Toso Malbec — Might be the best ‘pop and go’ red we have had in a very long time. And at 9$ or less, it is a winner.

The Taja definitely brings the THUNDER! I was heading to the neighborhood wine store the other day and happened to first watch the episode. It was perfect timing, as being a member of the LSKC (Law School Kid Club) I needed a good cheap Wednesday night bottle. (LSKC members are just a little older but significantly more in debt than those in the CKC) I drank it over the last two nights and it absolutely rocks at ~ $11 here in DC.

Ive had a lot of the Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo Carmenere (which is quite good for the price, but definitely avoid the CS) and a couple of bottles of the 2006 Pillar Box Red. The Taja kills both of them!! Thanks for the rec GV, I’ll be going back and picking up a couple more bottles to hold me through finals!!

Great show GV!!! I love your HONESTY, it is what separates you from every other wine critic out there!!!! They are all a bunch of whores, who will put 90 pts on anything for the right price! Nice work GV, keep it up!!!

Q-Probably a Montepulciano D’Aruzzo we had a couple of weeks ago, I forget the producer, pretty solid for $8.

I had a great sparkler with friends yesterday afternoon – the Blason de Bourgogne Crémant de Bourgogne Cuvée Brut from Trader J’s $9-10. Highly worth getting a case of and having around to pop because someone stopped by, or the flowers were blooming, or because its darn tasty.
Oh and Gary, I have a bone to pick. “Ri-DONK-ulous” is stuck in my head! Ugh! Its like some stupid annoying Rihanna song that you can’t shake and feel is killing your brain cells. Argh!

  • Gary!!!! Here’s on I thought was a great deal from Rocca Delle Macie… Campomaccione Morellino Di Scansano DOC 2006… the blend is 90% Sangiovese, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Merlot this is a ruby red, dry, full-bodied wine from Tuscany with ripe red fruit and chocolate on the nose, and a fresh smooth palate with a good finish. 13% alcohol and $7.99.

  • Never had a loureiro…never even heard of it before!

QOTD. I’ve had a few good wines from Trader Joe’s for under $10…I’ve mostly tried some from Chile/Argentina. (I’ve also had some awful wines for under $10 from T Joe’s!)

  • Most of my favorite under 10 wines have been spanish reds. The 05 Ercavio Tempranillo that you has on the show awhile back, 05 Ludovicus Tempranillo blend, and the 04 Borsao Tres Picos that used to be under 10 until Spectator put it on it’s top 100 list in 2006. Also, plenty of albarinos from Rias Biaxas that bring the thunder under 10.

  • QOTD 1. Yes, I’ve got an “original”, and the second (but still waiting on Mott to send me my third 🙁 )

QOTD 2. All time best was the Lieu-dit Les Fosses d’Hareng 2004 Vouvray for $9.50, but that was bought locally and would be much more than that in the UK. Store-bought it has to be the Stormhoek African Storm 2005 Reserve Chenin Blanc for $9 as a white, and the E&J Gallo Sycamore Canyon Cab-Sauv for $8 as a red.

QOTD: The last wine under $10 I had was Forest Glen 2003 white zinfandel. I found it to be a rather interesting wine, it reminded me of bottled lemon iced tea with other fruit flavors.
