I’ve had a lot of Loureiro before. It’s a great variatal for anyone starting to drink.
But I’m form Porto – Portugal, so it’s normal I had drinked Loureiro.

Anselmo Mendes has a lot of great wines!

    Hey all –
Sorry for “lurking” recently. The last really good $8 bottle I had was the Rhone rebel, which I started off with at the big Wine Lib party last month. It was what I think of as a great picnic wine – juicy and earthy for kicking back in the park under the trees, which i’m looking forward to doing again soon. Have a great weekend all!

Rueda- I’m not sure of the label- for $8 from the PA State Store in my area (just about the best wine I’ve found there at any price point). I’m really happy that I found it now because it will be the wine that I drink allllll summer long. Dry w/ med + but not bracing acidity, medium body, and just tons of lemon- yum

my favorite cheap cheap wine is the 2005 La Vieille Ferme Côtes du Ventoux; picked up a case on sale for 5 bucks a bottle. Even at regular price of 8 bucks its tough to beat as a mid week quaffer.

Also a big big fan of Château Pesquié Côtes du Ventoux Les Terrasses; I don’t like the 2004 as much as the 03 and haven’t had the 05. This I get on sale for around 9 bucks.

I always tell anyone who will listen that Southern Rhones are almost impossible to beat in the sub-10 dollar category.

I had to double-check to see if I’ve sampled any 100-percent loureiro wines. At a recent sampling of “oyster wines” I brought in a Broadbent Vinho Verde which had the typical frizzante and an interesting aroma of sweet-tarts candy; alas it was only 50-percent loureiro…

On your advice I’ve sampled some other Portugese wines (in the interest of value) and the best under $10.00 wine I’ve recently tried was a Portugese red-blend. Just under $15.00 is Whitestone Winery’s (Washington) “Pieces of Red” blend and it’s a superb value.

  • I’m pretty much a wine newb… and cheapskate. So this episode was right up my alley. I’ll be looking for Taja this weekend.

as for the QOTD… my go-to wine has been the Cline Zinfadel at Trader Joes… $7.99 I believe.

Would love to hear more reviews and some recommendations for wines under $10… or even $20.

QOTD: We’ve had a number of really nice Cotes du Rhones under ten bones lately. Things like: Perrin et Fils Reserve Perrin. Not earth shaking, but tasty sipping, and pair great with roasted food.

Thanks for today’s format, we love bottom surfing for good stuff.
