  • Fantastic eposode for our current economic slowdown where everyone is spending less or spending more wisely.
I especially like the Taja and the piece on Loureiro which I have never tasted.
Thanks from all the people watching here in New Zealand.

LOVE this show, I always find enjoyment in finding great wine for under 10 to 15 dollars, I like to call them “gems”

OWW YA…I am rocking one of the “old school” wrist bands.

QOTD: A wine called Canyon Oaks, don’t remember the vintage?? nice stuff for around $10 bones.

2005 Red Rock Merlot $9.99, really balanced merlot. Great for anything.

QOTD – The last reasonable under 10$ bottle of wine I had was the Don Miguel Gascon Mendoza Malbec. It was $9.99..I didn’t take notes, however I remember a nice chocolate / Moca on the nose and a tad of mineral in the mouth.. I remember enjoying it. It was probable 3 weeks or so back. I agree with “dz’s” comment about Carignan. The Chateau La Baume – Costieres De Nimes 05′. $8.98 – From Wine Library.. Yum…

    Terroirist aka Mike in Nebraska..

The best under $10 wines are most enjoyable when tasted with low expectations. They are like that independent movie or local band that you discover and think are great, but if someone else hyped them to you, wouldn’t seem so fabulous.

I don’t like the idea of rating a wine higher just because it’s cheaper, or for that matter, rating an expensive wine more harshly. Wines should be judged on their merits at face value, not respective of price, don’t you think?

QOTD: For me, has to be the Toso 2006 Malbec, the Paul Hobbs influence shines through. And at 9 bones it is definitely “lights out”.

Loved your James T reference, been watching him since the beginning of his career; what a fighter, what a character, definitely old-school.

  • Andy

Great ep G . Like the bargins for the parties….

QOTD— Spanish red Toro …. grat wine dude

Gary, come March 31, 2009 (my 21st birthday) I will be happy to apply as your host (or assistant host?) for Israeli wines, if you’ll take my application. Seriously.

QOTD: One of the best under 10 bones is the Portuguese Douro Altano. This comes from the Symington Family Estates. The ’03 was great, and the ’05 is drinking beautifully, right now! It’s addictive!!

  • Baron De Ona Reserva Tempranillo 1997 – had it with dinner tonight… but I guess the bottle is more than $10… the glass was less than $10…

Yikes… I don’t do well shopping for wines that are less than $10 per bottle…

Nice episode. I’m obsessed with finding good wines under $10. My recent favorite is the 2005 Silver Lake Cabernet-Merlot.

  • Most recent under $10 wine I had that was enjoyable was the 2006 Catena Alamos Malbec.

My all time favorite under $10 wine was the Covey Run “Barrel Select” Merlot. They no longer make that line of wines and it is a complete shame.
