QOTD: I know you do the show for us….but I recommend you do a show for YOU/US. Show us some of your personal favorite wines.

  • Chateau Simone from Palate… both the white and red… these are both great wines from interesting varietals with a lot of character and food friendly qualities; plus they are from the southwest of France…

It’s about time for a Chateau Simone show.

Oh and the wines of Thierry Puzelat, killer, different wines from the Loire.

  • Rani Haykal

    Great Show!!!

QOTD: I highly suggest trying the Darioush Viogner if you can get your hands on it. Also, the Godspeed cabernet is worth taking a look at, especially with it being an under $30 Napa Cab.

  • QOTD: Get a bigger chalkboard, or maybe a little digital tv to hang back there? And tie it to another camera. You could call it the “Mott Reaction Cam”. That would be sweet!

    Gary,

I love Amarone and wines similar to Amarone. Is there a comparable white version to Amarone which is dry and a little less sweet than Ricotto, Ice wine or Sauternes? From the research I’ve done, Canadian ice wines apparently have a an alcohol content around 13% which would indicate that it is drier. Correct? So far, I’ve not been able to find an ice wine that I could afford; much less a Canadian ice wine.

In the same way that I would not tug on Yo Yo Ma’s sleeve to comment on his bowing technique, I can’t bring myself to recommend a wine…but I’ll throw in my favorite food item.

#48 – Binny’s Brooklyn Reuben – on the menu at Zingermans in A2 (full disclosure – I work there. Honest truth – Not catching a ride – I’ve always loved it).

It’s a Pastrami Reuben…Rich and Funky Bakehouse Pumpernickel Rye (natural starters, double baked, sliced thick and grilled with olive oil), in-house-recipe developed with Niman Ranch for the Meat, Switzerland Swiss, housemade russian, great kraut.

It’s sensual. It’s too big for the room. It’s a riot of sweet and spicy, crunchy and squishy contrast and complexity…it’s the duality of man you can hold in one hand. I was lovingly and extravagantly misquoted in Edible Brooklyn talking about it. It’s one of the great relationships in my life.

Little is certain in this life…but something tells me the Lions will blow their pick. I’ll be watching for you GV.

QOTD: Two wines I would recommend are from the Paso Robles area since I was just there tasting. 1) Anglim 2006 Cameo, which is a blend of 50% Marsanne, 25% Roussanne and 25% Viognier. It was crisp, clean, GREAT nose and a nice finish, 2) Penman Springs 2005 Paso Robles Merlot. One of the really nice Merlot’s at a great price that I have had in some time.

I didn’t think the show was Crazy, it was GREAT!

Everyone have a great weekend!! Toast, sniffy-sniff, taste and enjoy!

  • AZTrojan

Great show Gary – I will be seeking out the Pomum. I appreciate you making us aware of these smaller wineries (i.e. Phillips Hill).

  • Yes Gary, you did try the Shya red at the Vayniac party. Javier and Shylah were there for a while and they brought a magnum of the 2005 to share. I asked you to give it a go since I remembered you commenting on your great grandpas name being Shya on a past episode. You thought it was a bit tight due to the temperature and the fact that it was being poured from a just opened magnum.

QOTD – Since you fulfilled my recommendation of trying the Pomum wines I guess that I will have to come up with a new one. Here is one that I know you didn’t get to try at the Taste Washington event…Stevens Winery 424 red blend.

What do I reccommend to you?

If you can get your hands on it, get a bottle of the 2000 Tenuta Farneta Bongoverno. 100% Sangiovese Tuscan wine that you could snag for around $35, I’d say. It is an absolute beauty of a wine; the toughest thing about it for me was trying to hold off on taking the next sip while the finish evolved and silky textures and tastes danced on my tongue. It’s beautiful now, and I think will only get better over the next couple years. The best wine I’ve had yet.

  • Ryan W

    Gary,

First off let me just say thanks for doing what you do. You have really put a spark into my passion for the wine and have really elevated my game. Thanks!

Second, I just received my first shipment of wine from WL. One of which is the 2004 Chateau Sansonnet (not sure if I want to save it or just drink it. Man I want to drink it).

Finally QOTD – Gary, I recommend that you do a live “Interactive” tasting where people can taste along live via the web. You can pair that along with secret packs and I think it would be killer. By the way, I am going to get both secret packs and am very excited as this will be my first.

    Thanks again

Can’t believe I forgot… what kind of Vayniac (Yes, I think it’s safe to say that I consider myself a Vayniac now) would I be if I didn’t ask you to send that book to my Dad as a birthday present?

QOTD: I recommend that you personally call me with the info on these killer small boutique wineries BEFORE you blab it to the whole world 🙂

I’m almost positive that you’ve done this already, but make sure to make yourself available to every talk show to stump your book.

    Recommendations?

Let’s see, this is the kind of QOTD that I can sink my teeth into.

But when someone asks for a recommendation, you have to know how they roll. How about the Casale Del Giglio 100% Petit Verdot, which I picked up on 3/29, and enjoyed shortly thereafter, a whole new experience, as I’d never had a PV before..

Or the wine that I was pleased to find was a hit on 3/29 at Basilico’s, 2004 Venta Mazzaron tempranillo (though it definitely needs time to decant, I gave it an hour before pouring it back into the bottle, and risked the ‘open container’ law on the drive down to the Library.

Have fun at the draft tomorrow, GV!

Great show Gary and Mott! I have been missing this gem until about two weeks ago. I happened to catch Kevin Rose’s twitter and he was raving about hanging with you and “really” tasting wines. Thought I’d check you out. Gotta admit the first ten minutes I saw; well sufficed to say I was not a fan. But dude, after twenty mins… I was hooked.Don’t change a thing! Love your personality. Great enthusiasm. Makes me excited to try different wines. you’re alright for a Jets fan. “GO SKINS” 🙂 Keep up the good work!

0h and to Gary’s twitter question… He was authentic his first 50 or so shows but he’s “keeping it real” now. Truth to oneself. 🙂

My first comment! Straight to the point! QOTD: I would definitely recommend a chassela grape based wine from Lutry, Canton de Vaud, Switzerland. Has nice honey aromas and real crispiness. Keep up the great work!

    I recommend 3 Portuguese wines:
1 – Redoma 2004, Douro – Portugal, Red, Niepoort, 25 Euros in Portugal, 18300 bottles. Great wine, Great producer!
2 – Alvarinho Soalheiro 2006, Vinhos Verdes – Portugal, White
António Esteves ferreira, 8,5 Euros in Portugal, 40000 bottles. It’s one of the gratest Portuguese Alvarinhos, it last’s for more than 10 years in the bottle!
3 – Blandy´s Bual 1920, Madeira – Portugal – Generoso, Blandy´s, 267,80 Euros in Portugal, 2118 bottles. A great Madeira wine! If you prefere you can try the Blandy´s Malmsey 15 Years Old, Madeira – Portugal – Generoso, for 25,75 Euros in Portugal.
