qotd: haven’t had a ton from either, and there’s a lot of Austrian wines out there that I wanna try but can’t find. So I gotta go with Gruner for Austria (big surprise) and chenin for South Africa (huge surprise).

If you stick “r-DONK-ulous” in my head again, I think i’ll have to take a WLTV break – your absurdity is too damn catchy. Nice show – I had an austrian riesling that kicked ass a couple months ago – A Terry Theise Selection, the Salomon Riesling Steinterrassem 2007. I hadn’t tought of this one in a while, so thanks for the reminder. And please stop with the RIDONKULOUS!

QOTD: I had a Gruner Veltliner just recently at the new Gastropub in San Diego. Can’t remember the vintage, but it went really well with the roasted veggies and crispy polenta I was having for dinner. You’re right, GV, this would substitute in rather nicely for Sauvignon Blanc.

QOTD: I haven’t had any memorable South African whites…my last GV was the 3rd bottle of the night (just don’t ask me the producer or vintage), but it was FANTASTIC from what I remember 😉

GV – You were on ESPN during the draft about a bazillion times. Crazy. I do have a bone to pick with you, though. You were in the “Devin Harris” chant big time. Then when Dustin Keller’s name was called, you immediately started cheering. Come on. As a Jets fan, you are obligated to boo the selection since it was not your 1st choice. You can switch to liking the pick soon after, but not immediately.

Jets fans at the draft have a tradition to follow. Don’t futz it up.

QOTD: They make a wine that is white?? And good?? I will have to look into this on Wikipedia.

I enjoyed sampling the Sauvignon Republic’s “Stellanbosch Sauvignon Blanc” which exhibited a remarkable nose of fresh passionfruit.

  • Bernhard Ott wines rock! You had another slightly more expensive Ott Gruner that you sold earlier in the year. I bought that one and it was amazing. Bring more of their wines in!

Hi Gary, I’ve been watching your show for a few weeks now on my Apple TV. I’m someone who is really NOT into getting hyped up about internet celebrity culture, and there isn’t much out there that interests me. I’ve gotten into Diggnation now, and my boyfriend and I watch it together, but that’s it. One day he showed me one of your episodes, and after initally thinking “this guy is full of it”, I became addicted. You are my favourite video podcaster (or whatever you want to call it), and I don’t even like wine. But you totally inspire me. I think the enthusiasm and technical expertise you bring to your audience is phenomenal. I really and truly appreciate your efforts, and I am a big fan. I think it’s a pretty big deal that you have fans of winelibrarytv that aren’t even wine drinkers. That says a lot about you.

I didn’t like being called a lurker, so there is your comment 🙂 I’ll write more later, and I look forward to more episodes. This episode was totally awesome; I like seeing you review wines that you really enjoy.

I think I’ve only had some sauvignon blancs from SA, and nothing from Austria. Sad really. But as you said, I live in the Midwest and GV isn’t around a whole lot.

QOTD: Had a Blue Cove Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa the other day at a local restaurant. It was much better than we thought it would be. Then we went to their web site, which was super-cheesy, and that made us sad.

QOTD: Best SA or Austrian white wine? I’ve never had a memorable SA white. I’ve drunk a lot of good — and no bad — Grüner Veltliner from Austria, but the best Austrian white was a Beerenauselese Riesling. This was back in the winter of 1984/85, just before a major adulteration scandal hit the Austrian wine industry. The occasion was an otherwise quite pleasant dinner at a now long-gone Austrian restaurant on Seattle’s Capitol Hill. The cost was in the $15 – $20 range for the glass. And it justified every penny of that! There was definitely no antifreeze in this wine. Nope, it was nothing more nor less than a natural collaboration of grapes & botrytis that had turned this into an unbelievably sweet, rich, complex elixir that lingered on the palate for an hour or more after the meal ended. Thanks for bringing this memory back for me!

  • That video of GV and AJV at the NFL draft is so funny :-). I hope you guys are happy with the pick! Reminds me of Romans at the Coliseum a bit, without the carnage.
QOTD: Have had the South Africa Southern Wright SB and enjoyed! Never had a GruV though!
