QOTD: I’m pretty sure I’ve had one at some point but that was before I was ever serious into wine. I’ll get me-self a bottle to try it out soon.

Gary-QOTD: OOOPS!!!!!!!!!! SORRY I HAVE had the Fronterra Concha Y Toro Carmenere. Sorry about that!! I didn’t actually have the 750 ml – this was a 4 pack of small bottles.

QOTD: I believe someone mentioned the Casillero del Diablo Carmenere, cheap and good. Everyone should try this one to start with if you haven’t had it, let it breath though. About 7 bones at Trader Joes, widely availabe. 88pts WS but should be more.

Gary: Concha y Toro Frontera series is usually crappy. That is their bottom line. You had some bad choices today, as you somewhat admitted. I’ve never had a good wine from Errazuriz.

    Some other recommendations:

    Concha y Toroyo Terunyo Carmenere
    Anakena Carmenere Single Vineyard

  • Thanks for the Carmenere review. I happen to drink Concha y Toro Carmenere as my “every day red”. I enjoy it just sipping or with a nice steak. I never thought it was the best of the best, but I never blasted it like some comments have or you did. At that price point, i’d like anyone to come up with something better.

That being said, I’m open for trying other, more expensive Carmenere. I dont have any in the cellar now, but i’ll see what I can find. I’ll review it, though not as well as gary, on my website.

QOTD: I don’t recall the name of the wine, but I recall the aroma. It was like slicing the lid off a green bell pepper and shoving your nose inside.

Nice show – I kind of like when a few of the wines fall flat. May not be as fun, but I feel like maybe I learn more…?

  • Glad to see a show on Carmenere! I like all the talk about Carmenere’s similarities to Merlot (and how they are often interchanged!). QOTD: Concha Y Toro Cassilerlo Del Diablo

  • Not sure if it is the same thing (label is different), I drank the heck out of Concha y’ Tora in grad school. That was a long time ago. Is it possible?

None of the carmeneres that I’ve had have stood out to me. I seem to remember a few mediocre ones. I do promise to try more, though. I like that the show often reminds me of types of wine that I may be currently ignoring. Thanks.

  • The very best Carmenere varietal I’ve ever tried was Laura Hartwig, from Chile’s Colchagua Valley. Rich, complex, wow!

Ventisquero ‘Quelat’ Carmenere and just last evening. Although Concha Y Toro’s Terrunyo (single vineyard) is the big winner for me $30 beans, 94pts by Parker. Love to try Concha’s reserve carmenere even above that that Parker gave a 97. Carmenere has hit the big time and it is does have a lovely little tale to tell. I enjoy the chilean blends with loads of merlot alongside carmenere and cab. There is a certain racy, meaty, exotic quality about it I sometimes find irresistable. Good show Gary, there are a lot of fine Carmenere’s out there. Great grill companions too!

I love carmenere. I have try everyone, that I found here in Sofia. The best and the last one was Casa Silva 2005 Colchagua Valley, Chile. For me this was a 91 points wine.

QOTD: I’ve had Carmenere but I can’t remember which one(s). I recall one was from a wine club, Club Red, several years ago. We used to get two interesting reds each month to expand our palates!! Club Red was from The Wine Exchange in Orange, CA.

I have had carmenere before but I can’t remmber the names. None of them were noteworthy. I have found many chilean wines to be overoaked
