I’ve never had or heard of lagrein before today. After work I called around to the few places that sell harder to find wines, and 2 out of 3 never heard of it, and the third didn’t carry it (no demand they said). So if I do try it I guess I’ll have to find it online.

If I ever meet a Lagrein I will know more about it and probably try it.

Gary, Serious education tonight. As I have mentioned before I hold level III Advanced cert from WSET and have Never heard of this wine. In fact it did not make the content of the level III book. Also only 2 sentences in Karen MacNeil’s “Wine Bible” and you know how respected that book is. This new format of WLTV is fantastic, Great work!. I am in for this wine, call me tannin crazed, certified Barolo nut case. Thanks for all you do!

  • I’ve seen the name Lagrein, but if you’d have asked me, I might have said it was like a region in Austria or the Alto Adige or the German-speaking part of Switzerland.

Where did I see the name? Probably on a wine bottle that was sitting on a store shelf next to a Grüner Veltliner.

Sounds like it’s worth hunting down next time I need a break from Primitivo.

But hey, there’s a lot of obscure varietals out there. For example, I wish you’d do shows on Georgian varietals (like Saperavi or Kindzmarauli) or American hybrid varietals (like Baco Noir, Leon Millot, Chambourcin, Marechal Foch, or Cynthiana) sometime.

    Interesting Show!

QOTD: I had never heard of Lagrein before today.

I searched one of my favorite wine stores and found they had 5 Lagrein based wines one of which was a Lagrein Rose. Most of the wines were from Terlano with 1 Ignaz thrown in as well. Only 2 wines were priced below $30 and one of those was the rose.

I’m unfamiliar with the Lagrein grape but am going to try the Greiser and see how I like it, I go through old world phases and it sounds great for that mood. One note – listening to this show on earphones I picked up faint background music – am I crazy or was the studio mike picking up something?

Nice show again, I did know the lagrein wines. I’ve had a lagrein rosato and a lagrein rubino, both from Marco Donati. Very interesting wines I have to say, nice to do a show on these!
Tip: try other Alto Adige grape varietals, especially Vernatsch. Very interesting wines as well!

I’m a lurker! I’ve never had lagrein, and I want to! I refuse to buy the same wine twice, and I’m reluctant to have the same grape from the same region twice because I just like to try new stuff (which by the way I wouldn’t if it weren’t for WLTV).

Have never tried before, local stores don’t have. Sounds interesting.

  • The LCBO has a couple of lagreins, but I don’t think they’re in stock at the closest store. Really eager to try it, I’ll tell you that!

  • Tom L

I’ve never heard of Lagrine, let alone tasted it. Can’t see doing the price point point for the experience. When this little niche starts offering wines at more affordable prices, I’ll take the plunge.

  • Susan

Gary-QOTD: I have never heard of nor had a Lagrein. This weekend would be a good time for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂

  • Hey GeeVee … NOPE, I have never heard of a Lagrein either! But now I will never be able to say that again!

Got a new job so I’ve been too busy to watch everyday, but taking tonight to catch up! I miss the daily watching, though. What was up with that cheapie Cab blind tasting?

Headed for Lagrein (almost sounds like ZZ Top) this weekend. I would send a Redskins T shirt, but it would destroy the Jets.

Nope – never had a lagrein. Thought I’d heard of them all, but not lagrein. Did have a monica this evening from Sardinia, however (Argiolas Perdera – Parker 89 points), half the price of the lagreins, but still bringing the thunder. If you want to expand the pal economically, check out Sardinia.

  • I’m a lurker, and a big fan of the show. I’ve never been a wine guy, but your show is making me want to go out and try some more and more. There are several places around where I live that do tastings, and I’m definitely going to go try some soon.

Gary, thanks for doing the show, man! As always, entertaining, educational, and inspiring.

Just out of curiosity, what’s a good beginner wine? I’ve searched the archives, but didn’t come up with anything. I’m looking for something a little sweet, tart, not too bitter. Any suggestions???

    Great Show! We love Lagrein.

QOTD: Had a couple of bottles – most recent 2004 Imagery Paso Robles Lagrein this last winter. Little pricey at 40 bones but worth it.

QOTD: Never heard of Lagrein much less had one. I had to read up on them in my “Vino Italiano” book. I doubt I’ll find one in my area south of the Finger Lakes, but worth a try.
