Ahhh, you finally got me..I have not had a Lagrein.

I will be feverishly looking for one to try.

I’ve seen every show, but I’ve only posted about three or four times, so I think I qualify as a lurker. I tried my first Lagrein at BAR VELOCE a few years ago, and I fell in love with it. The wine people at Bar Veloce always recommend it, and I totally agree with them. It’s kind of an austere, old world version of Barbera. What do you think, Gary?

Never tried a Lagrein, still kind of new to all of this, but I tried my first Barbera tonight, Michele Chiarlo Barbera D’Asti Le Orme, with some Italian food. Good stuff!

QOTD: Been LURKING since I first stumbled across this site (linked from John Gruber’s ‘Daring Fireball’ website).

LOVE YOUR SHOW !!! – educational and incredibly entertaining. Like the mix of enthusiasm, insight, irreverence and use of new age technology to spread the word and build the Vayner Nation!

Since I’ve just started drinking wine in the past year (at age 54, can you believe it!), NO, I’ve never heard of Legrein. And, do you really think they’d carry this in Pennsylvania – stuck in the dark ages of wine marketing with their archaic ‘State Store’ system ?? I SERIOUSLY doubt it …..

Keep up the fantastic work – hope to visit your store someday soon – would love to see your little ‘studio’, as I’m in the sports video business, and also have a little bit of a web video component in my work.

QOTD: Nope, never heard of it. Can’t wait to try it though!

Please don’t tone down the over-the-top east coastness! I’m currently living in Colorado and rely on the Thunder Show to get my (almost) daily East Coast fix!!

BTW – I am drinking the super-vegetal Concha Y Toro Frontera Carmenere from a couple of weeks ago. I had never had a vegetal wine before and wanted to try one since I love veggies and V8 so much. And ya know, I like it! I love the dirt smell and the “green” taste. Thanks for putting a $4.40 wine on your show.. I probably wouldn’t have tried it otherwise. Now I won’t be scared to throw down for the good “veggie” wines! 🙂

AFAIK, I have had only 2 Lagreins. One, from Alto Adige – can’t remember the producer, unfortunately – and, I was pleasantly surprised. Not your easy drinker, but interesting nonetheless. As you say, worth seeking out. Second Lagrein was from a local (home) winemaker in CA who had made a barrel of his own. Don’t ask me where he got the grapes, not sure who is growing Lagrein out here, but he was very proud. I am going to grab one for this weekend – we are having a party, and I’m going to put it out there and see what the horde thinks.

Question for you regarding scoring these “under the radar” varietals. When you say 89 or 90 or whatever, I assume you are scoring based on a global scale, yes? So, an 89 is a really solid wine but doesn’t kill you, then a 90 starts to have that spark, and so on. What would be really interesting with these kinds of wines is to hear (or even score) what you think in terms of where they rank relative to an expression of the varietal. I mean, you could have a Lagrein that is top of the top for Lagrein, like it will never get better than this example, but on the “global” scale of wines, maybe that is just a 90.

Especially since you are trying to expand our minds in terms of what wines we’re going to try, it would be cool to know not just how drinkable the wine is, but how good an example of this obscure wine it is.

Counter example, think Australian Shiraz. There is so much out there that might garner 90+ points for being well-made, super extracted, over oaked, fruit bombs, but as an expression of Shiraz, they aren’t that good. Maybe that’s a bad example since your palate leans that way anyway, but reviewers give a lot of wines high scores that are manipulated so far away from varietal or terroir expression, it would be really refreshing to hear how well the wine shows off the grape and sense of place or not rather than just a raw score of how well it drinks overall.

I must confess, I am a lurker. And I have never in my 21 year old life had Lagrein. I’m in the Bay Area and need to try more of all the awesome wine around me. Thanks for your help!

    nope. Never had a lagrein.
I have WAY too much wine in my cellar right now. I promise to seek a lagrein out one day…just not all that soon.
It’s all your fault, you know. I never would have gotten so deep into wine without your show, and the forum!

  • Until this show, I didn’t know a lagrein from a lapdog. I thought I was a proud lurker, but it looks like I once commented here and then promptly forgot.

Anyway, super fun show. Good luck GV scraping yourself out of bed for the Chicago flight.

QOTD — no I have not, but if the Kellerei Gries Lagrein showed up on Free.WLTV, I’d snag a couple.
