    Wine from Texas.

    “The horror, the horror”

Let’s be serious and do some Rhone tastings and some quality Provence tastings.

I live in Texas and have found very few wines that I like. Outside of the 4 states I like a wine from Davenport Winery in Eudora, KS. It is called “Blues Brothers” which is 100% Norton aged in wiskey barrels. It goes great with Hamburgers. Also, from Valiant Vineyards in South Dakota I like the Wild Grape (pricey but interesting).

QOTD: Rosa Fiorelli Conquistador from Bradenton FL. They call this a blush wine but it is very brown. It has an extremely unique flavor and I was really into it when we went down to the winery for Mothers day. I’ve got a bottle with your name on it for the 23rd!

I’ve been busy the last couple weeks and away from the show, but it’s great to be back. You’re the greatest!

I was born and raised in Texas and I couldn’t agree more about the sports teams.

QotD: Northern Michigan Riesling. I think it was Leelanau or something to that effect. It was pretty good stuff, and they also had a pinot noir rose that was quite interesting.

Good episode Gary…I agree with you that these other states will start bringing the thunder in the future.

    QOTD:
-It was a wine for a Chateaus in Georgia but i cant remember the name.

  • Dr T from N. Carolina

    2006 Westbend Riesling (North Carolina)

    also
Buckingham Valley Chambourcin Nouveau (actually tastes like wine, unlike the Beaujolais N!) Pennsylvania

Pontchartrain Vineyards in Louisiana has produced some nice things (and some not to nice) as well

    Great Show!!!

I live in Houston, TX and I will be the first to say there aren’t any Texas wines worth mentioning yet. I think you may have been a bit too nice to the Becker wines by scoring them in the 80s.

QOTD: Only wines I have had outside the western coastal areas are from Texas and none of them have ever caught my attention. If I had to choose one though, it would probably be the Messina Hof Barrel Reserve Cabernet Franc (I dont remember the vintage).

I have NEVER had the opportunity to try an American wine. They just do not seem to get exported to New Zealand. You guys are keeping them all to yourselves perhaps? A pity, some of them sound great. I would be particularly keen to try Zinfandel, sounds awesome.

Maybe we’ll start to see some down here as your dollar is TANKING against ours also, so that should make things more affordable…

Virginia is serious. When my kids were young we brought them to Colonial Williamsburg and Monticello. I hadn’t even thought about wine but these signs are everywhere. Some are a little touristy but the quality was a surprise. I don’t remember the varietals but some of the wineries I remeber are Horton,Barboursville,Keswick and White Hall. No need to do California, there has to be a hundred wineries in VA right on the East Coast.

I like the concept of doing various states. But you can’t judge a state on a few random samples forwarded in. Some from my state (Mo) would be awful. But some are great. I didn’t like wine much until someone gave me some Norton from Adam Puchta winery in Hermann, Mo. Still my fav.

QOTD: Haven’t had one. Living in DC, there’s a lot of VA wine available around here. I’ve had one wine from VA and it wasn’t very good. I’m planning to get out to do some tasting in VA sometime soon though, so hopefully I’ll be able to respond affirmatively in the near future.

Where is wine country in TX by the way?

QOTD: I haven’t had many that aren’t from the states you’ve indicated, but there were a few New Mexico wines that I drank often when I was a university student. I can’t remember their names at all, but I’ve been thinking that next time I’m in New Mexico I’ll have to do a wine tasting.

Texas? wow. I was thinking more that North Carolina has some new valleys really producing some good wines (not all sweet or Muscadine either).

    QOTD: Hogue Reisling…

  • Horizon Cellars Cabernet Franc Siler City North Carolina

  • QOTD: Around 1998-2000 I had a $10(?) Idaho Merlot a few times that was pretty decent.
You should definitely do an episode on Mexican wine.
Maybe Fountains Of Wayne can open the show.

  • It’s ok to diss Texas teams and especially their wines unless it’s made out of tumbleweed. I’m surprised they broke the half-century ranking.

QOTD: Hands down, HORTON Viognier from Virginia. It is one of my fav white wines, especially now since it is easy quaffing out on the deck.

Not a good showing today. How long has it been since you’ve done a VA white episode? I would stay away from the reds though there have been a few cab francs that are not tooo bad.

P.S. My latest find: Alcyone dessert wine from Uruguay. Wowwwwwww

  • I’ve not had many American wines outside of that realm but there are a few wineries here in Tennessee that I’ve tried and most of the wines produced there are too sweet for me but the Bean’s Creek Chambourcin Reserve is amazing. I think the vintage that I had was 2001 or 2002 but I enjoyed it immensely. I have yet to find another Chambourcin from any other producer but I’d love to give it a shot. Hey Gary, why don’t you do a show on Chambourcin? I’ve never seen you do any.

  • I’ve looked everywhere and still can’t find the sticker for Wine Library TV. The sticker is of a wine bottle, and Kevin Rose had it on his computer! How do I get it?!
