  • I’ve looked everywhere and still can’t find the sticker for Wine Library TV. The sticker is of a wine bottle, and Kevin Rose had it on his computer! How do I get it?!

Being a native Texan I can’t say I’ve tasted any Texas wines that have “knocked my socks off”. However, I have tasted a few interesting ones, such as Messina Hof Merlot (Private Reserve)(QOTD). Also, Fall Creek Vineyards (TEXAS) makes some nice wines.

Gary, it was great meeting you today. Iâ??m looking forward to reading your book. So, how old is Mott? Does the commenter who got it right first win anything? Iâ??ve got too big of a backlog of various world regions, varietals, and styles to start a tour of â??other statesâ?, but I probably will give my local winery â??Chadâ??s Fordâ? a try this summer. You need to enjoy doing the show and not be killing yourself answering emails. The Vayniacs will understand.

QOTD: My favorite is the Barboursville Barbera from Virginia. They make a nice Sangiovese too.

I’ll go with Virginia, Petite Manseng, Horton Vineyards. There are a lot of options from Virginia.

  • I’m not surprised that some of the Texas wines are not up to snuff, at least not yet-I was in Colorado a few weeks ago and had a Sangiovese from New Mexico which bore the same characteristics you described here.

QOD: I don’t have a favorite wine in the US outside of the states you mentioned.

QOTD: Visiting my mom down in Austin we got to try a few, the one I remember that was pretty good and really reasonable was the Fall Creek Granite Reserve.

  • Good QOTD. I had an Oasis (Virginia) sparkling wine that I thought was very good. Can’t remember the vintage or the varietal. We met the owners on a cruise ship in French Polynesia and they brought along some of their wines. Most of what they brought I would term as “OK” but the sparkling wine was very nice. They were very nice people too.

    Hey Gary….GO STARS!!!

Texas is no where near reaching their ability in producing good wine but it will come around as the vines age. I think there are much better wine producers then the what you were sampling such as Su Vino, Llano and Falls Creek.

The only good winery I found in NC (my current purgatory) is a place called Weathervane out of Winston-Salem. If you think Texas wine is weak you should try the some of what I called fortified grape juice in NC. I stopped going to the local wine festivals because it is just always a big disappointment apart from some Viogniers that actually are done pretty well in these parts.

  • QOTD: Thank you, Gary, for trying the Becker Vineyards Viognier! It’s been one of my go-to wines for quite some time now, living in Austin. One of the best Viogniers I ever had, though, was once while dining at Charlie Trotter’s in Chicago. With the tasting menu was paired a Viognier from Virginia (I believe it was the Pearmund). It was beautifully barnyard-y and complex. I was hooked on Viognier from that moment on.

the quality of wines on Gary’s show is plummeting….Texas wines?? are u f’ing kiddin me? this show sucks. What next Idaho wines??? Who buys these overpriced crap anyways, I understand the market is bad and Gary is reluctant to do shows with good wines anymore. Doesnt want to open good bottles no more. Show is totally un-interesting just like these wines! Would rather Gary open a can of Soda and Call it a DAY!!!

Gary, I think your tasting would have been more favorable with several other wineries. Messina Hof port and Fall Creek Chenin Blanc come to mind as two we prefer.
Jason, One of the most popular areas for Texas wineries is in the Central Texas region, close to Austin.

Saw that show result coming from a mile away. Blah 🙁

QOTD: None. Did have some Virginia wines at a vineyard there several years ago though. Nothing significant enough for me to remember. Had a fair riesling from Idaho and some of the Gruet (N Mex) sparklers are ok.

  • Julia L.

ouch Gary…we need to rep Texas alittle better than that, im suprised my MIL sent you the Texas Hills stuff bc i dont recall ever drinking it with her ::shrugs:: ahh well. BUT i have to step it up for Becker, just went there this past weekend and had some really cool stuff there. they had 19! different things to try and my faves were the “Prarie Rotie” super cool, very big BUT easy drinking..kind of hard to find, also loved their Riesling,. but my fave wine of theirs is their Iconoclast Cabernet…i gotta stand up for my PAL 🙂

Can’t say as I’ve ever tasted any American wine from other than Cali, the NW or NY.

But for the Red Wings, the Stars (Whose broad stripes and bright STAAAARS) might have the Stanley Cup now…

Southwest Michigan does not have the variety or quality to match any of the areas you’ve mentioned. However, for people new to the game who enjoy high sugar or for a pre-meal drink, Michigan Demi’s and reislings aren’t bad. Try Tabor Hill or Lemon Creek Winery. Very small batch, very high sugar. Good ‘country’ wine.

  • QOTD: Su Vino Syrah from Grapevine Texas. Was just getting into wine when I had it so I’m not sure if my taste has evolved away from that type of wine, but it was certainly pleasant when I had it.

I like that Mott tastes the wine occasionally too. You should keep getting him involved.

QOTD: I’ve had a handful of American wines from smaller production states. I’d say the 2002 Barboursville Vineyards Cabernet Franc Reserve and the 2004 Childress Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Barrel Select were decent. The ’02 Cab. Franc threw a whole lot of sediment when we had it earlier this year and that kind of threw me off. Plus it paled in comparison to the 2002 Lang & Reed.
