EP 488 Austrian Red Wine Tasting – A Battle Of 2 Unknowns

Gary Vaynerchuk dives head 1st into 2 wines that would not be at the top of everyones wine vocabulary, the Kartauserhof estate was originally built in 1380 as the wine estate of the Carthusian Monastery in Aggsbach, hence the name and then he St. Laurent grape is on display and this should be a very interesting episode to say the least!

  • Austria is a freaking dark horse. Love everything I’ve tasted. When I can find it. Austrian dry muscat rocks…and the screwcaps look sweet on all the wines.

  • Nice show, and I think I could be a RAT too. I have always been big on scores, but am starting to move towards feelings as well, the 100pt system is starting to irritate me.

    I’ve enjoyed the Austrian reds I’ve had – The Höpler 2000 Blaufränkisch and the Lenz Moser Prestige 2005 Blauer Zweigelt Reserve. Neither were expensive but good for their price range.

    QOTD – “Where do you think you are in your lifelong journey through the world of wine?”

    My answer to my QOTD, I’ve turned off the main road and am on some weird and wonderful country lanes. Not sure how to get back on the highway, but having fun trying to find it again!

    My QOTD would be to tell your experience with Zweigelt or other Austrian Reds.

    Answer: My first exposure to wine was actually when I worked on an estate winery in Rheinhessen, Germany. I fell in love with Spätburgunder before I knew it to be Pinot Noir, and often went for our estate St. Laurent & Spätburgunder before any of the other reds we made (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, which were actually pretty decent). We also made a Spätburgunder Rosé that was quite tasty and a couple Sekts (Sparklings) used making the grape.
